Aren't cheques much faster at clearing now? I had a few PPI refund cheques late last year/early this year and they all cleared within 3 days.

Sure, but this is a big insurance house, and they have said it will be 7 days, so I'm expecting it to clear in 10...

I had to set up a new bank account with Lloyds to pay a cheque in as I can't go to a branch and their app allows you to take a photo of it. As a bonus I also chanced it with a cheque that was a year old and that cleared too :)

Technically, cheques don't expire but from my limited experience of working for a bank, the only people that check the dates on cheques are the cashiers in the branch at the point of paying them in so if you pay them in via the app, they'll just go through. I've paid in one that was just over a year old and it went through fine.

I switched from First Direct to HSBC for this reason, at the time the FD app didn't have cheque photo pay-in (might have now though) but the HSBC one did.

Then I found out there was a £500 limit on cheques paid in this way so I had to go into the branch anyway for a bunch of the PPI things.

I am with the Halifax, and the app is great for paying checks in.

I have 2 shares with DXC, and we get dividends (approx 5p) in a cheque.

I thought this too. It always reminds me of the story a friend told me about 30 years ago when he was a production assistant for Roger Waters (one of the founding members of Pink Floyd) and found a royalty cheque for £750,000 in a drawer in the studio, which was dated 18 months earlier and Mr Waters couldn't be bothered to go to the bank...

My "Can't Be Arsed" figure is considerably lower than that, probably more akin to £20 or lower

Banks do have an unwritten rule that they'll refuse cheques over 6 months or a year, depending on the bank and depending how arsey the cashier wants to be. But no, cheques never expire. They're a promise to pay money and can be thought of just like a cash note or coin.

I think it's thought of as a courtesy to respect the issuer of the cheque - particularly for personal cheques it's a pain in the arse if someone cashes a check years later when you're not expecting it, given that it comes out of your account when the cheque is cashed. Another reason to ban cheques.

After watching a Youtube video on how an episode of 90s' Hanson sitcom "Dinosaurs"* used vegetarianism as an allegory for LGBT issues and quickly tied itself in contored allegorical knots, I started reading the Wikitruth biogrphy of Franz Nopcsa von Felső-Szilvás. Fascinating life and a tragic end, taking in palaeontology, kidnap, spying, and aeroplane hijacking. He's now my favourite gay Translyvanian dinosaur hunter.

Wikitruth wrote:
Nopcsa discovered and named several species in his lifetime ... He named the turtle species Kallokibotion bajazidi, which literally means 'beautiful box of Bajazid'. The reason for this name was that the shell reminded him of Bajazid's arse

* I don't remember ever watching this, but remember a schoolmate was obsessed by it.

Just had a really odd happy memory pop into my head of me and a mate sat in a booth in a nightclub in Sheffield (probably drum and bass, or something) in a haze of gear smoke LIKE ABSOLUTE KINGS whilst two girls were trying to get us to dance, and us not being interested as we were TOO COOL and the bouncers walking past, giving us a nod, and not caring.

I told this to MrsA and she said "I would have hated you at uni"

Greenock petrol bomb “hitlist” published on line

This is pretty serious, but I couldn’t help being amused by the irony of “The first blaze saw Greenock man George Miller, 46, burn to death in a back garden as he accidentally set himself alight while trying to torch a flat in Union Street.”

I used to drive past when I worked out there. That will be good news for Roll-Royce and getting engines tested.

Made me smile

Man fishes bomb out of canal
Quote:
"I knew it was something big, but my eye was caught by a shiny builder's tape measure that was stuck to the other side of the magnet.

"When I pulled the tape measure off, I saw it was a bomb on the magnet.

"I rang my mate who knows about ordnance, he said to send him some pictures and he told me to get away from it as soon as I could.

"He said to put it against the wall because that way, if there is a blast, it will only go one way.

"Some people put it in a bucket of water if it has just come out of water, to keep it airtight.

"But last time I did that, they took my bucket and I'm a Yorkshireman, I paid for the bucket and I didn't want to lose it."

Be interesting to see what the new Berlin airport is like. When Jem and I went to WordCamp Europe last year we flew in to Schonefeld airport, which was pretty nice and modern, and (eventually) flew back out of Tegel airport, which is renowned as being the worst airport in Europe apparently, and I can see why.

Very interesting layout, with the terminal building being hexagonal and meaning that its very quick to get from place to place inside, but it was very backwards and dated compared to more modern airports.

This was rather stressing me out last night:
Attachment:
paypal.PNG

Not unusual for PayPal to do an occasional review, but for this one, it's pretty extensive - asking for proof of ten sales including descriptions and tracking, plus photo ID and proof of purchase from supplier. Took me ages to go through it all only for it to time out on one of the longer parts losing all my uploads. Went through it all again only for the uploads to fail.

Looking on Twitter, there have been a lot of people affected by this so I suspect PayPal have had some kind of glitch overnight.
