Huh, so it seems even that's not required any more; MAME comes with a decent enough UI out of the box and it picks up control pads automatically. I haven't tried it with two pads plugged in yet but I'm optimistic now. The only thing I might redefine is the insert coin and 1P/2P start buttons so those can be done from the controller as well.

I'm now slightly sceptical how much time Mrs B actually spent playing Tiger Heli though because she is absolutely goddamned fuck-awful at it.
