Pah... I've just had a parking charge notice from a meeting I had at Costa the other week.

It allows you 90 minutes to park there but there's signs inside saying that if you make a note of your registration in the diary behind the counter, you can have 4 hours. I did this and still got the charge letter for £60.

Obviously, I'm not paying it. I've appealed it and told them to look in the diary. Cretins.

I've just had one of those mornings when an ostensibly simple task turned into a time consuming and unresolved pile of cack.

Task: Check a store's headset transmitter repeater, because staff are complaining of crackling noise on the headsets. A replacement repeater was provided in case the existing one is bust.

Method: Arrive at store, find the repeater to see if it's powered on or in a fault state and restore to service or replace it.

Problem 1: No repeater found in store in any of the usual places.

Solution: Call the hardware team as they have a database of the stores with locations of base stations and repeaters.

Problem 2: Hardware check the database and don't have a record of the location of the repeater for that store, but if I find it, can I let therm know where it is so they can add it to the database for future reference.

Problem 3: I search the store from top to bottom and can't find a repeater, so I install and successfully test the supplied replacement. I call the hardware team to tell them, but the phone rings once, then goes silent. I try again several times, same result. I'd mail therm to call me, but I don't have their address.

Problem 4: I'm trying to close the call on my tablet but it wants the serial numbers of both the old and new repeaters. I can bypass this, but should also record the serial numbers on the general parts database, but I can't do that as it MUST have both incoming and outgoing part serial numbers.

Problem 5: I call my manager, who I know won't be able to tell me how to proceed, but may know someone who can. She doesn't answer but texts me to say she's in a meeting. I leave her a voicemail message, outlining the problem. I call our engineering helpdesk, but they can't help as it's not a tecnicasl issue, although they suggest maybe installing the repeater and logging it as a chargeable call, because the store don't know where the faulty one is. But the stores never know because an engineer installs them and leaves no documentation or tells them where it's been put. The engineering desk then advise me to call the hardware team. If i could speak to them i wouldnt have called engineering, FFS. I call an engineering team leader who may know, but I get a text from him asking me to call back later. I mail him to ask if he has an email address for the hardware team. So far, no rep!y.

My manager contacts me on WhatsApp (she will do anything to avoid actually speaking to any of her engineers), to see if I got the problem resolved. I appraise her if the situation, but get no further response, as expected.

Problem 6: The parts system will expect me to return the faulty repeater, but all I have is an empty box. In a few days this will pop up on someone's report as an unreturned part and they will mail me to remind me to return it. I will reply, explaining the circumstances, but they won't know how to resolve it. Basically, they don't have a facility for supplying a part without one being returned. Their system can't deal with that. They will probably say I should have interrupted the original call, returned the good part, and told the store to raise a purchase order for a repeater. The store will not be able to do this as the repeater is a special order and is not on the company's purchasing system. Only the hardware team can procure them.

I move in to my next call.

The binbag I need to put out for collection tomorrow has at least 5 mice and one very very large rat in it.

Less than 2 weeks of "collection".

I am fairly certain that this is the only one. There no other signs of mice apart from the odd sighting. It also doesn't like peanut butter or chocolate.

Ah, that’s still joyous!

I was going to ask about that, actually. As you did more than standing background acting and featured quite prominently, did you get a higher fee?

I did, yes. I can't remember how much I got paid exactly but I remember thinking that it was very generous.

I even did some over time. They didn't need me for a few hours in the afternoon but rather than me go home or hang around in the canteen, but they offered to pay me for just hanging around in the background of a few more shots.

My proudest moment was kicking a mouse into a trap.

(Obviously I'm not proud about killing another animal, but the kick was a thing of beauty.)

Oh, that’s super to know that you were well treated. You seemed a natural. Have you never thought about maybe doing a bit of stage acting? You’ve got a strong voice. Even just a bit of an-dram or seasonal panto?

Ooh.., then you could get us tickets and I could take Darwin. Works perfectly for everyone. Right, there you are. Do panto!

You know what, I've always wanted to do a panto or something like that. It's just a matter of actually doing it isn't it? There's a local group that meet near here but they meet on a Monday which is Sea of Thieves night on the Xbox so you know, there's a problem.

I came really close to applying for the panto which is run at the local school a couple of years back. Maybe I should actually do that? It does seem fun.

Honestly, you should absolutely do it. There’s nothing like the buzz of the stage, and you are just kind of made for it. And how old are your kids? Can you imagine their faces at seeing daddy up there. You really should. It’s such good fun and Panto is the most fun of all (signed, former Cinderella (twice), and former Peter Pan).

I don't think I need much more than that!

Bit late this year but that just means I've got 12 months to hone my trade.

They're 7 and 5 by the way.

Hi folks,

A couple of times I’ve seen a film or program that is set around a teacher who has a favoured set of students at a boys school, and he has a tradition where he invited them over to listen to ghost stories near Christmas (perhaps Christmas Eve?)

I cannot remember a single other thing about it. Could be five years old, could be fifty. Could be a drama, horror, comedy. No idea. TV show, film...

Any ideas? I thought if it this morning and just can’t remember what it is.

Sounds like it's based on MR James. Mark Gatiss did a superb documentary on him a few years back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOGZ4WQT2vg

Ok, I think it might be based on M R James, as you say, but I don’t think it was that documentary in particular as in my mind the boys walk through snow to attend this story telling at the teacher’s lodgings in the school grounds. And I don’t think they had the clips of the monsters and ghosts, but in essence of the scene it is very similar.

Also, I was convinced it was Christmas for some reason.

My proudest moment was kicking a mouse into a trap.

(Obviously I'm not proud about killing another animal, but the kick was a thing of beauty.)

Another animal? How may have you killed, exactly? *lowers glasses to look over the top of them, pen poised above notebook*

Well, there was this fly once, who really had it coming...

I meant “other than me”. I should have just put “an”, rather than “another”. Apologies for my ever-clumsy English.

Sorry, Nik, I was joking  It may not have been apparent, but obviously there’s that link between animal torture and serial killers, and I’m retry site you’re not one of those.

And don’t apologise for clumsy typing to *me* of all people. As my sight problems increase, so do my typing problems, and they were awful to begin with.

@Dimrill I think it might be As Ghost Story For Christmas. I’ve been searching and there was an original annual run in the 70s/80s but they started making them again in 2005 and shown on BBC4. The one this year is written by Mark Gatiss (and he seems to have been heavily involved in previous ones) and this year starring Peter Capaldi. Most are based on M R James stories. Would not have found the trail without your reply, so thank you xxx

I'm sitting idly in the van, waiting for dispatch to find out if some missing UPSs can be found for a call allocated too me, so I'm having my lunch break and going hither and yon on t'internet and, as I've been considering getting the ST out of the loft to see if it still works, was thinking about which games I'd really like to play again.

Elite was always one of my faves, so I had a peep in Wikipedia to find out more about its development and came across this bit of info that was new to me, "There are a number of poorly located systems that can be reached only by galactic hyperspace— these are more than 7 light years from their nearest neighbour, thus trapping the traveller. Braben and Bell also checked that none of the system names were profane - removing an entire galaxy after finding a planet named "Arse"."

Made me giggle, did that.

Makes Braben and Bell sound like a couple of Vogons.

I knew it would be :) The 1968 adaption of Whistle and I'll Come to You is breathtaking. The closest to an actual nightmare I've seen put on flimum. Mr Gatiss is bring Martin's Close to the telly box this year. Can't wait.
