I'm quite happy to admit it's selection bias.

Still don't know what #tcot is, I'l look later when I get home. it's a bunch of tweets about colonial politics, at a glance.

It stands for "Top Conservatives On Twitter" and is a common tag for right-wingers to tag their posts. Rather more popular with the Tea Partiers than the moderate Republicans.

Speaking of which, almost interesting article in the Metro today

Look at the list of the top 5 contributors in each case, the Republican one is interesting :)

A quick google lead me here via ]here which they said this:

Quote:
Our inference method is based on examination of the media
list a user subscribes to. As a rule of thumb, we assumed
that a user follows media sources that match his political
leaning if all the media sources he follows are of one political
leaning. These users with clear political preference,
whom we call seeds, accounted for 7 million or 50.8% of all
audience. Most seeds were either left-wing (62%) or center
(37%). Only 61,164 users (1%) were right-wing.

but I haven't the time to read the full paper carefullly, as I'm much to busy and important.

Not sure where this belongs so i'll put it here to begin with

Firstly , Stephen Moffat has quit twitter , http://sciencefiction.com/2012/09/10/st ... r-account/

At least partly because of the abuse he was receiving , (he hates women apparently) , some people have responded to those antagonistic tweets and have had death threats

http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/71884255.html
( Amanda Abbingdon - partner of Martin Freeman)

Quote:
Right. After this long winded tweet, I am putting this to bed once and for all. I am now receiving death threats. Some people want to kill me because I stuck up for a friend. Death threats. I mean, really? Are you serious? Some nameless, faceless cowards actually want me to die. What a wonderful world we live in. And all because of this: I don’t think Steven Moffat a misogynist. I don’t think he is a homophobe. What he is, is a thoroughly decent man, who, in my opinion, writes high quality drama that is hugely popular and continues to win awards. In my opinion. What I witnessed the other week was cyber-bullying at its most rampant.

Now, I consider myself a feminist. I am the first to champion women and I happen to work in an incredibly male-dominated profession where good, challenging, stand-out women’s roles are still dwarfed by the huge amount of amazing men’s roles. And where women still have to fight to be taken seriously and keep their clothes on. I am also a mother, first and foremost and I juggle those two careers precariously. Women are made to feel guilty for having children, not having children, working for a living, getting married, staying single, usually by other women, I hasten to add. I have been a professional actor for nearly twenty years and in that time I have been on the receiving end of misogynist behaviour more times than you can possibly imagine. I was sticking up for a friend, who, I felt had been bullied.

Now, if you don’t like Doctor Who or Sherlock or indeed, any of Steven Moffat’s writing then don’t watch it. If it upsets you to the point of sending him death threats, then don’t watch it. Be constructive, please, of course, I am all for that but when that criticism turns ugly (and I stress, the stuff I read had become incredibly offensive) then constructive criticism goes out the window and it becomes very personal and frightening. Last time I checked, death-threats were not in the least bit constructive. I have recently just tried to stick up for a young actress who was being harangued on Twitter. It amounts to the same thing. Faceless bullying again. And it is in no way constructive.

I sincerely apologise if I came across too strong with some of you. Twitter tends to have that effect on people. The internet can be a fantastic place or Hell on earth. My reaction, in hindsight, may have been a knee-jerk reaction. Maybe that’s because I was horrendously bullied as a child and so any sort of injustice and cowardly attack is heightened to me. Or maybe, I was defending a friend who has contributed to British drama more than any one of the people who were cussing him last week. You see, you all have a remote control. You can always switch off. Just an idea…

Some of this sparked by a comment here https://twitter.com/CaitBlackwood

"u are ugly and ur such a bad actress. u cant act so just stop! "

The original tweet now seems to have gone but from someone who's twitter notes said "Dr Who and Sherlock" and was sent to Cait Blackwood (who plays young Amy in Dr Who and is about 12 years old)

And you read all of that and think , as a world we dont deserve nice things :-(

After however many years of encouraging people to "have their say" and reminding them of their right to speak, this is where we've arrived.

Was it really the late eighties when New Model Army wrote "225"? The whole song is eerily prescient of now, but the emboldened passage really makes me think of Twitter.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
She stares at the screen, at the little words of green
Tries to remember what to do next
There's a trace of frustration that crosses her face
Searching through the keys she should press

But I would help her if I only know how
But these things are a mystery to me too
And it seems to the corporate eyes they are watching
She fears for her job and the moments they are passing
I stare at her name tag and I think to myself
Both you and I, we never asked for any of this

Let's take a walk up past the chemical works
Where the sky turns green at night
We'll talk about not getting away from here
Some different kind of life

But even in the freshest mountain air
Oh, the jet fighters practice overhead
And they're drilling these hills for uranium deposits
And they'll bury the waste for our children to inherit
Though this is all done for our own benefit
I swear we never asked for any of this

Well, this golden age of communication
Means everyone just talks at the same time
And liberty just means the freedom to exploit
Any weakness that you can find

Turn off the TV just for a while
Let us whisper to each other instead
And we'll hope that the corporate ears do not listen
Lest we find ourselves committing some kind of treason
All filed in the tapes without rhyme, without reason
While they tell us that it's all for our own protection

I swear we never asked for any of this
Oh, I swear we never asked, not for any of this
Oh, I swear we never asked for any of this
Oh, I swear we never asked for any of this
Oh, I swear

In any case, people's right to have their say was something promoted without thought by those who failed to consider that most people are better off shutting their stupid mouths because they know nothing and think somewhat less than that.

Who is the writer, anyway? It's an interesting story, at least. I'm not saying it is made up, but some bits seem to be at the farther end of the bell curve.

how do you pull IPs from facebook, and google+? The blog should be easily enough done, so I'm happy with that. It seems too fantastical.

Pulling the IPs isn't the problem (although yeah, I'm not convinced by that part either); it's the tracing of the IPs to a non-commercial address that I'm struggling with. Unless the troll's parents were running some kind of business out of their house the only party that could map an IP to a physical address is the user's ISP. And unless his "basically an IT genius" friend randomly happens to work for the relevant ISP or got up to some shady shit then he wouldn't be able to do that surely?

Which makes the tale too complicated and I begin to distrust it.

Further: I find it unlikely that the Garda would ignore an incident of religious hatred targetted to a specific address in Ireland. I also find it hard to believe that they would further ignore threats against a person in Ireland when other threats concerning this person's religion have been made.

Trolling as a word has no meaning whatsover anymore. Even on this forum, we have degenerated into the Daily Mail definition of 'Things on the internet that I personally don't agree with'. However I've yet to see anyone here blame it as a cause of cancer. OH WAIT THAT HAS HAPPENNED.

Its quite possible for the parent to have a static ip address and for that to be tracked back - there is information missing from the post but it all seems plausible.

As for the original sentiment , I just think they need help.

Is that really true? At least when referring to each other's actions I've always seen the word used in the traditional way i.e. someone making a post that doesn't necessarily reflect their actual opinion but is made purely to wind other people up.

Dear God, yes. It seems that if you disagree with someone and their very next post doesn't change your mind, you are a troll and they shouldn't bother talking to you.

It's me. It's always me. I'm a cunt not deserving of the oxygen powering my heart. I ought to man the fuck up, but I can't and I don't even know what that means so it doesn't help and I'm shit.

They didn't report it to the Garda though, according to the chap's blogpost. That was sort of the whole point of the story.

I'm not sure about which word is the most accurate but I've seen a few people behaving like utter cunts to each other on here lately, for no reason that is readily apparent to everyone else. It's all getting a bit tedious frankly.

Links plz. I have missed the drahma round here. It's been too sedate. :)
