I always need hard drives for my business though so I would have bought one in the near future anyway. This one just looks nicer.

Did you go for the professional installation?

For a usb drive. Purportedly for consoles....

Fair enough, I thought for a minute you'd bought a branded internal drive, which would've been bonkers. Isn't that one pretty over-priced though, based purely on the spec comparison at the bottom of the Amazon page? I'd have thought that when dealing with video files--which are generally chunky--that paying more for a drive with such a properly awful transfer rate is a pretty bad idea.

ETA: actually, belay that, it seems the Amazon page is just massively under-reporting the transfer rate of the SoT drive there.

You're very welcome, though I'm not convinced it's necessarily worth ~£12; the mobile pricing was much more appropriate.

Yeah, I did notice that, and I know it's short: I don't care. I want to play it on Switch for bigger screen / TV reasons.

Fair. Although, thinking about it, I'm not sure how well the controls will translate to a console style touchscreen. Using a mouse on the PC version would be a step down from a touch screen but still work; on the Switch I can only imagine an on screen pointer controlled by one of the sticks which will be usable but definitely less enjoyable.

It reviewed well enough on PS4 so it must have pad controls; but of course the Switch has a touchscreen that I plan to play on. (MrsDoc might use the TV though.)

Huh. My only contact with the Switch was once at myp's and he told me the touchscreen isn't used for actual games. I presume now though I've picked him up wrong and he meant only it wasn't used for any games that he actually own.

Yes. Not a lot of games use it, but some do, and from the reviews I've read Gorogoa is one of them.

I read some reviews and found it's a little stripped back, but for £18 you can't really complain. It's got all the World Cup venues and teams in a free update too! Remember when they were separate full price games?

I did think about getting it for the PS4 but Sal would murder me if I monopolised the living room playing football games, as she hates me watching the World Cup as it is.

Ugh, and with only 20GB left on my SSD I apparently don't have enough space to install it! Granted, 120GB for my main PC drive may just have been a stupid idea in the first place.

Do you not have a large storage drive as your secondary?

Yep, but as discussed elsewhere it's an HDD so I'm not installing games onto that.

Weird, I only use my SSD for Windows and install everything else to my 2TB secondary, games and all. Am I doing it wrong then? I've never had any issues, loading times or otherwise.

It depends on the game, how much stuff it loads into RAM, and how it loads it in.

The best case for an SSD is something like World of Warcraft. This is a big game and it loads in a huge number of assets from a large number of 1GB cabinet files at the initial game load.

Loading from a hard drive is a slow, painful experience, and even when the game has loaded and you're in the game world, you'll see characters popping in around you and it filling in the world detail for a fair amount of time, and the whole thing chugs dreadfully whilst this happens, even on a powerful PC.

From an SSD not only is the initial game load massively faster, that 'pop in' phase is completely eradicated as well.

At the other end of the scale would be something like Pinball Arcade, this is a small game and each table isn't much data to load in, and each table has its own data file. I actually ran this game from my storage hard drive before I got the new PC with more capacious SSDs.

Realistically most games will come somewhere in the middle of course, but generally speaking it's 'Yeah, SSDs are load quicker'.

I believe it's universally acknowledged that running games off an SSD improves load times and whatnot so I'd have to say that arguably you are doing it wrong. Also, if you've never used anything but an HDD for storing games then isn't it difficult to make a statement about loading times either way?

It's also worth noting that the location of your windows swap file is very important, because if it's loading stuff into and out of ram instead of directly from the install files, that's the disk where performance matters.
