Maybe, but I think most people would think "toasted under a grill" when you say that. Whereas I specifically mean "fried in a pan."

Ah, that must be why you said 'grilled'

Fucks sake

If we're going down the road of "discussing all the ways Americans have the wrong food words" we'll be at this a while. We can segue into the non-existent word "broil" for a start.

MrsDoc has no idea why it's called a grilled cheese either. Perhaps a corruption of "griddled"?

A toasted cheese sandwich made on a Breville basically is a grilled cheese, so actually you're agreeing with me. A cheese sandwich, buttered on the outside, gently fried against a hot surface -- whether the surface is the Breville or a frying pan. Same basic thing. Texturally quite different to the canonical cheese-on-toast, and I prefer it.

The beauty is that there are many correct ways to do this.

Even something as simple as:

Toast bread
Add slices of mature cheddar
Douse in Cholula

That can be a thing of wonder, and *gasp* the cheese isn’t even melted!

I also like to grill one side of the bread, flip it, then add sliced cheese to the other, soft, side. Then grill until molten. Nice crunchy edges, nice gooey soft middle. Excellent for dipping.

Om nom nom.

They are almost the same.... BUT a Breville makes the toastie all pillowy puffy, seals it all around o prevent losing precious cheese.

At sixth form my staple packed lunch was a cold toasted cheese sandwich, for precisely this reason.

Cold toasted cheese sandwich? Well, that’s something I’ve never considered. Hmm!

This is true. BUT that sealing process also heats the interior to eleventy billion degrees, vastly increasing the risk of facial scarring, and restricts how much cheese you can use. Swings and roundabouts.

The important thing is that people recognise Cholula.

The terrible thing is that I have no cheese.

It's that rum and coffee liqueur, right? I'd never considered it with cheese on toast before, but it might well work.

Definitely :this:

Crumpets, I mean, instead of bread. I have not experienced Cholula (yet).

Baked beans on top is something I can thoroughly recommend as well.

I notice that no one has made the distinction between melted cheese on toast and toasted cheese on toast, by which I mean that the cheese has at least started to brown and crisp. I usually stop at melted, because I JUST CAN’T WAIT TO EAT IT ONCE THE SLICES HAVE STARTED TO COAGULATE INTO A SINGLE SHEET.

I sometimes like to stripe it up a bit by applying alternate slices of Cheddar and Red Leicester, or other slices of different colours.

Oops, almost forgot that as well as sauce of the day, I do like to add black pepper.

Oh, I also prefer my cheese on toast on crusts. In the Warhead household no one other than me eats the crusts in sandwiches or as toast, so when I’m having cheese on toast using a new loaf, I will use both crusts ....... because I can never eat just one slice of this delicacy.

And then there’s the variety of breads. White, brown, whole meal, seeded. You name it, there’s no bread that I know of that doesn’t benefit from being toasted.

I have a theory that most wars could have been averted if the pre-hostility negotiations had been undertaken with toast provided.

Oh, I forgot my guilty secret, and some of you may find this distasteful. If any melted cheese drips off the toast into the grill pan, I will pick it out when it’s cool enough to handle and eat it. NB the grill pan is always clean before cheese on toast is prepared.

With the help of the Yes Chefs, this was my dinner tonight. It's like I took all their skill and talent, disregarded it, and threw some fish fingers into it and served with some anaemic chips.

I found wine to be the most horribly expensive thing. A very average to poor bottle would set you back £15 in the supermarket. Definitely prioritize wine in duty free (if you can still bring a bottle in).

Cheap things: get yourself down to Daiso for stocking fillers for the kids. It's basically Japanese Poundland and it's ace.

I cooked fish fingers, then mixed anchor 1:1 with hot wings sauce and added a bit of salt and chucked fish fingers into it.

Tonight’s repast was mild Cheddar with toppings of sliced jalapeños, halved olives and sliced baby tomatoes. And a sprinkling of black pepper. A sort of pizza on toast. Lurvely.
