We get through 6 pints of milk a day normally. I think our milk consumption drops over Christmas, more interesting things for breakfast than cereal, but we often by 18 pints of a milk on our supermarket trips any way.

It's looking like Christmas plans mainly involve lying in bed being ill.

Fun.

I don’t think I ever finished early on Christmas Eve when I was on internal IT Support. There was always some late screw up that required me to stay on-site until it was resolved, which meant I usually finished late rather than early, even when the rest of the office of around 400 were told they could bog off at about 3pm.

Looks a bit like the opening scene from an episode of Blake’s 7.

Oh and CHRISTMAS MUSIC IN EVERY SINGLE SHOP, ALL THE TIME, I have reduced the mark to 95/1000 because of that. No one wants to hear 'Wonderful Christmastime' by Paul McFuckingCartney. Ever.

Pretty much all of :this: except that I’m not on call.

We tend to buy pressies that we actually need, so I’m getting a new TomTom as my old one is over 10 years old and is now not capable of accepting map updates. In the past I’ve had a new hammer, a new bike seat, etc. Some friends have found this amusing, but they were things I rally needed at the time.

Well we’ve cooked basically everything.

We’ve made:

Saltine toffees
Lemon shortbread
Grandma (MrsDoc)’s Christmas Cookies
An eggnog pie with a ginger snap crust
2x batches of eggnog
Mulled apple juice (spiked with rum)
Pavé potatoes (like Dauphinois but you slice then shallow fry — these are for tomorrow)
Ham (sous vide in Coke, glazed with maple and mustard)
Beef stock (also for tomorrow)
Chicken stock (mostly used up already)
A modernist chicken roulade (already eaten most of this)
Sausage rolls
Gravadlax

After the last big push to do dinner tomorrow, it’s days of grazing on leftovers for me. Which is just how I like it.

Scandinavian cured salmon. Side of salmon (well, half a side for us), lots of sugar and salt, plus flavourings (traditionally dill; this year I did lemon, juniper, and cucumber.) Into the fridge for 48 hours, rinse off, serve cold. The salt draws the moisture out of the salmon and firms it up, even more so than with smoked salmon. Great Christmas fare. I’m going to serve it on blinis with a little cream cheese although rye crisp bread and a dill-mustard sauce would be the traditional choice.

My son (4.5) was told by a Santa he visited earlier in the week that he needed to be asleep tonight extra early.

Santa told him he had a magic key to get in our house which only worked when he was asleep

Just got him asleep now after endless trips downstairs

In the end, he told me he was worried that Santa's key wouldn't work as we weren't asleep :)

Did you go to a n00b Santa, or just an evil one? Early to bed = (even) earli(er) to wake up.

Obviously don’t keep them up massively past their natural bedtime either as they still wake up early and are just grumpy beggars from about 2pm.

Santa has laid out all the presents for the kids in the living room and boy, they've done well this year... There's a lot of presents.

We didn't buy a huge amount for them this year but there's presents from friends, relatives and even neighbours that we didn't expect. Sign of the times I guess? When I was a kid I never remember getting this much.

You seem to have overlooked the one key uncontrollable factor.

The users.

Some balm pot always seemed to turn up just as I was about to leave, with some incredibly important task that HAD to be completed before ‘close of play’ and without which the government would fall, trade deals would fail, the population would starve, etc.

And this, despite us having a ‘lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on ours’ policy.

The usual routine has been my parents taking me over to my brother's flat in Sale for a bit of a get-together and present exchanging on Christmas Eve and then on Christmas Day, me wandering over to my parents' house for dinner and a few hours of bad telly. I imagine that'll be the plan this year too if Dad is up to it, but I'm rather hoping my brother will suggest coming to us instead, so that Dad doesn't have to exert himself too much.

Unfortunately, one of Dad's symptoms flared up (even more unfortunately, it's the one that turns him into Buster Gonad) and my brother and his family all came down with the lurgy, so yesterday ended up being a quiet present-exchanging couple of hours at my parents, which actually suited me fine, but wasn't really what everyone else had planned.

Today is a meal at my parents' house later and then my anxiety can start to ease and I can look forward to stuff again. :)
