My entry for 'dullest thread' award at the 10th anniversary party. I've been sleeping on springs for the past year or so, and really need a new mattress. Anyone bought one recently? I don't think it's the kind of thing I can just click online for, not least because I still need to get rid of the old one. |

They have showrooms and everything and take your old mattress away. You can google and see if they're in the 'shire. |

I bought a memory foam job a few years ago off tinter net, arrived all vacuum packed and small. Put old one on gumtree/freecycle. Much cheapness many bargains and I love my mattress dearly. |

We bought one a few years back. I believe it's called Tempura or something like that? Anyway, it wasn't cheap so it's a good job it's the comfiest thing I've ever slept on. I dread going on holidays sometimes as it means I'll have to sleep on a mattress that isn't mine. #1stworldproblems |

Simba are apparently pretty good, and they have demo mattresses in all John Lewis stores. About £600 for a double mattress. I had a quick lay on one (fnarr fnarr) but it's not really enough to get a good idea - but fortunately they offer a 100 night trial and if you're not happy they'll refund 100% and collect the mattress from you. |

Benson's for beds are actually pretty good at their job. Both our ridiculous main and spare beds came from them. Main mattress is an Adelaide which I dont think they do anymore - 1400 pocket springs with a memory foam topper and it's still amazing after 2 years. Normally i find a mattress will have enormous Homer grooves by now, even if I turn it properly, but this one has just the slightest detectable ridge down the middle. They also have a gizmo which you lie on and it can simulate all the different firmnesses with pressure display. I'm sure it's just a gimmick but it's fun. |

The eve mattress on Amazon's daily deal is apparently really good. I was tempted myself, but Jem quite rightly pointed out that there's not really anything wrong with our mattress, apart from its thickness making it hard to find suitable sheets. |

Resurrecting this to ask of anyone's actually got one of these new-fangled all memory foam mattresses? I'm slightly concerned about them because apparently they can be very warm for some reason--I already run pretty hot and don't need any help in that department--but wondered if anyone had any actual experience? I'm perfectly happy to just buy a sprung mattress with foam top but you hear so much about the foam ones these days it seemed worth asking. |

We have a really thick pocket-sprung silent night mattress with a 3” memory foam top. I sleep with the window open, year-through and prefer just a sheet in summer, but I’ve never noticed that the mattress makes me feel warm. I guess there’s no way to ‘test’ it unless you know someone with a full memory foam mattress to sleep on a few nights. Edit: just remembered that we’ve also put an electric blanket topper on top, and a mattress protector. I’m basically climbing in with a ladder now, and I’ve got a princess and the pea bed. Maybe it depends on whether you like a cool bed or cool air? I guess I like a warm, snuggly bed but cool fresh air in the room. Yes, I think I like a cold bedroom (because I have the windows open when it’s snowing) but to be bundled up snug and warm in the duvet, so maybe that’s different to what you mean. |

The mattress my ex and I had for years was a 'sprung with foam topper' and I was happy with that so I think I'll just go for the same again given that no one's advocating for the full foam setup. Thanks folks. |

Due to the wife’s dodgy back we have a stupidly expensive Mammoth mattress which I think is made of foam, but it is the best foam and comfortably (hah) the best thing I have slept on. I love it. |

We stayed at Russell’s grandad’s, and his first room has a FEATHER DUVET on it. It is stupidly warm and SO HEAVY. The heaviness is actually really wonderful and comfortable, if it weren’t for the heat. I remarked on the heaviness of it to Russell, and he said it was the weight of guilt for all the poor ducks. That kind of spoiled it. |

I have memory foam on top of normal foam and I love it, the two previous pocket sprung with topper types I had previously got our shapes squished into them within a year or so and made gloing noises occasionally which was annoying. This one's like new after about 5 years. Awesomes. Hypnia I think is the brand. |

There wasn't much source of heat in there beyond the people and the electrics, and there weren't many electrics compared to a modern spacecraft. Also the film may have exaggerated this, although I'm not sure. Space isn't meaningfully hot or cold; hot and cold are characteristics of matter and space doesn''t have much of that. So a space ship or station is gaining heat due to processes happening within in (ie. people doing work and electrical systems working) and absorption of sunlight, and losing heat from radiation, which is pretty inefficient. Depending on what's going on and how it's designed it's quite possible it gains heat faster than it loses it. Without cooling systems (e.g. the ISS's), it'd overheat. While I'm OT and talking about common misconceptions about space, the force of gravity caused by the Earth on board the ISS isn't zero. It's about 90% of the level it is at the surface of the Earth. (ISS orbits about 400 km up. It's not that far.) |
