Way I look at it? at least we got another game to watch with England in it :)

BTW - yup, I remember all of that. My brother still has our Bulldog Bobby Spain '82 duvet cover.

Regardless of who won etc, the very first WC I can remember watching is ‘82.

I don't remember much about that but I do remember '86. I mean, who couldn't, right? I wasn't into football then. Dad died in '81 on the pitch (playing for a Sunday league thing) and so I hated it. I didn't get into it until I was about 20. I asked all of my friends what teams they supported, put them all in a hat and pulled out..... Spurs

hahaha all I can say is I am used to being sorely disappointed now :D

So much conflicted. I am out of the country. I am considering (probably too lazy) changing nationality. I am endlessly embarrassed by England's history, and much more so by some people's reading of it. I was in Australia for the Ashes and NZ for the tests afterwards, and didn't mind losses all that much, helped by idiots flying a union jack in support of "England" on the same day that Scotland were playing an ODI for qualification to the world cup.

And yet. I really wanted this team to win, watching it via teletext (effectively), while navigating through California. And if they march on? I will be excited. Odd. I will get to watch Saturday's game, from the US, and will suffer every/any awkward moment. I am hoping to see them have some wonderful worry-free swoop to 3-0 and a straightforward win. What that says for my psychology, who knows.

I much prefer the Union Flag over the Cross of St. George.
Seems like the latter is quite a recent thing anyway.

Very much a response to the growth of Scottish and Welsh identity. I don't particularly mind seeing the English one, but get mildly annoyed when I see people so sure of their national identity they have to write out 'England' across it.

By the way, is Andy Murray Scottish this year?

Go be German then. Or American. Or Iranian. Or Mongolian or whatever.

Or maybe chill out? Your nationality doesn’t define you as a person. If you want to be a good person - be a good person and live a full life.

Cross of St. George is cheaper and much less complicated in terms of face paint.

I remember in '96 before it started I wanted a George cross flag without "England" on it. Took me about two weeks to find one.

Yesterday was a great result for England but (with the exception of the shootout) a terrible performance, although Colombia were crap too. Maybe it's the relative youth in the squad, but England do get rattled under pressure.

With the Colombians' occasionally underhand tactics, it's nice to have an occasional reminder that other teams have a bit more class -

I thought about the performance, and tbh? it's kinda hard to link anything together when you are being fouled all of the time. I guess we will find out when we come up against a decent team. At least now we know we won't be bullied and we have the bottle when it counts.

Seems slightly different to me to fly the union jack in a one-off game vs Germany, compared to cricket, where many people don't even really know it's England&Wales, and ignore the other countries' teams. But yes, it is a loose identity. And a confused one.

Oh my God so very much this. It would be beyond dreadful, and then you’d get Farage and the like being interviewed. I feel nauseous at the thought of it all. :spew:

Neymar is an utter irritant, isn’t he? He’s completely unlikeable because despite the massive talent you’re just waiting for the appalling diving and faking of injuries in every game you see him in.

Agreed, though I still think the French are quality overall, and that white strip today was a thing of beauty.

Well even if football doesn't quite come home at least it may remain in the EU :D

Very happy with the results today. Uruguay were puny. Sadly I missed the Belgium game as I fell asleep and just woke, but I will gladly take that (they are my prediction to win this time around).

Amusingly (not actually amusing to me) I got England in our work sweepstake. I threw a hissy fit and said no way am I having that, so I swapped with a colleague for S. Korea - it’s not about winning, it’s the principle!

Yeah. TBH? they should be 1 and 2. On play alone.

I still think Belgium can win it, though. They have two of the best midfielders in the world (KDB and Chris). And that is just scratching the surface.

Ed. WTF how did I think Christian Eriksen was in the Belgium team? :belm:

Still think Belgium are gonna win :DD

I really enjoyed that. Brazil were no mugs, and had several chances - one of those early corners really should have gone in - but if you can ride that and score, more power to you. And they've come from 2 down, too, which might not suit a counter-attacking team. That semi ought to be the highlight from here.

Well those English fuckers appear to be through so I’m just all out of interest now. I hate this poxy country and those spawny footballers.

There’s still hope I guess - they still need to win two more games so there’s still hope to crash out in tears.

I've just spent ten minutes cleaning up my Facebook feed by unfriending all the england fans. I'll re-add them in 6 months, if I notice they're gone, of course.

You're not an England fan then? You should have mentioned it before...

I'm an ABE.

Anyone But England. And I mean anyone. Russia are actually prototype genetically engineered supersoldiers whose victory will directly cause World War 3? I'll take them.

The French pre-match warm-up involves sacrificing innocent animals to Satan? I'd take them.

Belgium employ a sniper to shoot any member of the opposing team that crosses the half-way line? I'd take them.

I'd have even taken a Neymar-led Brazil. That's how serious I am.
