It is brilliant. You know how all these open-world games have massive worlds with nothing to do but collect flags etc? This is the opposite. Dense, tightly-packed levels with absolutely loads in them to do.

Epic's latest freebie game is a 'mystery' game due at 4pm today and there's a lot of chat that it's GTA5. I'm not sure how many people there are out there though that would want to play it and haven't already picked it up. I suppose any new players are just grist for the micro-transaction mill as far as Rockstar are concerned.

Somewhere in Rockstar, there must be a really interesting spreadsheet calculating the cost/benefit of taking GTA:O free-to-play.

I wonder to what extent the ship has sailed on GTA:O being a credible multiverse, though. It certainly prints money in the short term. But I think its MAUs are a fraction of Minecraft, Fortnite, or Roblox.

I see Just Cause 4 is £8 on PSN at the moment.

I own JC3, but never bothered with it as the loading times were nasty.

Has anyone played JC4 and is it a marked improvement on JC3?

I played and loved JC2, in spite of the identikit missions and baddies.

My main gripe was the mission structure (there’s a new map where you have to help the rebels to expand the area and visit new locations. It’s a mess and it’s unnecessarily restrictive), the missions (everything is boring now. Go here and hold this area. Then go here and hold this.) and the intro is boring AF too; the story is drab and the characters are drab and the cutscenes are yawnsome. The fun of destruction seems to have seeped out of it. If you’ve played one of the other games you’ve played the better game.

Ack, I fear Sat is right re JC4.

I've not played JC since 2, and it's all there in 4. Beautiful scenery, access to cool sh1t v early on. A grappling hook with various plug-ins like booster mines (sling your hook at a chap, attach a booster mine to him, activate, watch him fly across the map like a ragdoll with a rocket up its arse). I was in a tank blowing shit up just 30 minutes in.

But there's no rest, no let up. What I enjoyed in something like Far Cry 3/4 were the moments of quiet as you navigated the island. Perhaps you'd run into a patrol. Maybe you can avoid them. If you don't, you can deal with them quickly and move on.

Or in Far Cry you might run into a skirmish between rebels and the militia. If you choose to intercede you get to enjoy a gun battle and the warm feeling of having done something good when it's over.

But in Just Cause there are no end to these battles. Kill the milita? More militia turn up. Constantly spawning, never ending, to the extent it's never worth joining a skirmish that you're passing because you'll be there until you either die or decide to leg it/grapple-chute away.

Still, for now, the cheap thrills of blowing shit up in a very picturesque place is fun. Grappling up to a helicopter, pulling the pilot out so the chopper falls to the ground as you wingsuit away is undeniably awesome. But I fear, like candy floss, the cheap thrill will turn sickly and dull fairly soon.
