Fourth high profile instance of something along these lines from Netflix in the last few months, right? I wonder if it's them being new kids on the block and not having policies to combat this stuff. Yeah Chronicle was good, but rest of his work I've seen has been pretty bad. And from what I've seen him voluntarily say/do publicly I thought he was probably a bit of a jerk, so hearing these allegations about his private life didn't come as much of a surprise. Being the son of a famous Hollywood director is probably somewhat conducive to thinking you can get away with anything. Kinda feels like he's fallen upward for most of his career. |

That New York Times article completely ignores that even AFTER she had said ‘no’ he continued to push for sex and try to manipulate her into it. It says he stopped at that point. Which does seem to somewhat cheapen their point that he’s fine because he stopped as soon as she said she was uncomfortable. |

I read about the Pixie Geldof relationship today (as far as I can tell there is no suggestion of wrongdoing in the way there is with Brand, but from the little I know of Geldof she was likely quite vulnerable as well as, obviously, very young), but what’s the other stuff you are referring to, Dimmers? I remember you referencing it once before, and I went on quite an extensive Google but couldn’t find anything (because my search terms were too vague, I think, as I didn’t know what I was really trying to find out). |

Cookdandbombd did an article probably about 10 years ago now about celebs using their fanbase to hound people. MooMoo was one of them after he used the term "retarded" in a tweet and someone pulled him up on his choice of words. He then sent his mob out after them. The person at the receiving end had depression and they tried, unsuccessfully thank thor, to commit suicide. As their one avenue of interacting with the world became a cesspit of people insulting them and sending death threats. All gleefully watched over by the horrible twat. S*m*n P#*g also did it to a reviewer who'd given one of his films a bit of a bad review. Belatedly he regretted his actions the next day and apologised to the reviewer and asked his followers to calm down. But that horse had already bolted. The person who came out the best was Charlie Brooker, who, when addressing negative tweets he received, redacted the username in order to keep things civil and nonwitchuntery. Class bloke. Of course that spurred on a subset of trolls upset that their fleeting moment of recognition was taken away from them by such redactions. |

Grim reading. Blinkered canvases are such a weird thing. I can’t think of anyone I like so much that if people started saying ‘hey, this person did some BAD stuff’ that I’d overlook it for their work or because I really thought their YouTube channel was great  I mean, sure I’d be disappointed as heck if Attenborough was an awful person or Toksvig did some awful stuff, but I’d not rally around to defend them regardless. |

Watched the Channel 4 Dispatches about this a few days ago. Though it is *horrible*, and shocking, it’s just so unsurprising. Like Saville, he spent most of his career telling everyone what he was doing, and that era of brash, taking advantage of anyone who was vulnerable ‘comedy’ was defended as a laddish laugh and you couldn’t complain about it in casual conversation as you were either deemed too thick to understand why it was funny or without a sense of humour. Same goes for Ricky Gervais and David Walliams & Matt Lucas, and honestly I hope it comes back to slap them down in some way. One thing did come up, I can’t remember if in the documentary or mentioned elsewhere, but it was on this whole ‘Sachsgate’ thing. When the apologies came, the apologies were made to Andrew Sachs, NOT to his granddaughter. In the Dispatches episode, she said that he (Sachs) subsequently didn’t speak to his granddaughter for *eight years*. There may have been some other dynamics at play, but on the surface that’s some world class victim blaming there. |
