Erm, turns out that you can only change hold to run (rather than tap to run).

You’ve still got to smash A to get/keep top speed on your hoss.

I was heading to flog some stolen watches and stopped on the way to clear a bounty. After paying I saw a game of dominoes about to start on the railway station platform so thought I would have me some of that action. I won the first round, and, as the second was being dealt I heard a train whistle, then a dull thud. Then Myp The Horse landed next to the table. He had gotten on to the tracks and got himself run over. Rip, myp.

Upgraded to a better hoss though. The old ones just sitting in stable. (or sold, in the case of the one you start the game with)

I've found hoss rustling and/or taming to be a particularly bad form of income.

I tried murdering my way to a new oss but it all went tits up and the plan of one quiet roadside murder turned into a succession of driverless carriages zooming down the road with witnesses on board.

I finished the story, which was one. I could probably give a synopsis which is an impressive thing for a video game where it's usually just a series of fights. Ended up just treating it like an interactive movie which worked best I found.

My chum asked if I'll be buying this game and I said it's on the list to play at some point.

He imparted the information that he is now on his fourth horse and that Tatters (as in, I left your mum's arse in....) is no more. 'What happened to Tatters?', I asked.

'There was a train accident' - he said.

He also relayed a tale of finding a house off the beaten track, getting really drunk with the residents until he passed out, only to wake up elsewhere with all his money having been stolen. As such, he went back to the house, killed the residents, piled their bodies up, ransacked the house, and then set the corpses on fire.

Apparently it's taking him a long time to finish the campaign because he constantly gets distracted with stuff like that.

I'm right and the end of this now and it's best big long game I've played in years. In fact it's the only game of that kind of length I've actually seen through since FO3 which must be ten years ago or so.

I've just never got bored with it, I remember feeling a bit jaded by the end of FO3 but not even a bit of that. It's just so beautiful, the writing is consistently decent, it's never frustrating or overly difficult so it's rare to have that immersion breaking experience of replaying sections. I love the pace of it too, the way you move through the world.

Mostly though it is just that it's beautiful. Riding around the countryside for a couple of hours each night before bed just isn't getting old for me. It's really taken me by surprise too because I never counted myself as a fan of RDR 1 having given up after a dozen or so hours. I think when the story is finished I'll still be riding around doing some screenshot photography, spotting plants and animals, camping out. Can't imagine that I'll be bothered by the multiplayer though, I'll have a nosey but it seems like it would be almost the opposite of everything I've loved about it.

Post subject:  Re: Red Dead Redemption 2

I’m enjoying the story, the characters, the beautiful world, the atmosphere and the fabulous music but it’s a lousy “game”.

It’s fiddly, it’s mechanically wonky, the gunfights are boring, the multiple systems on systems break under pressure, there’s a few bugs I’ve run into, the lengthy animations cause some problems and issues, the speed you can walk around the camps is annoying, the camera is a bit annoying (it won’t lock to the side so it keeps trying to wander back behind the character/horse and makes shooting anywhere that isn’t directly in front of you, especially on the horse, a nightmare. Plus it’s a 30FPS game so if the camera keeps moving the screen is a bit of a blurry mess so you can’t pick out details very well) and the lag is super annoying.

Amazingly despite all the problems it’s a compelling experience.

I've got bored and moved on. To a game that is 16 years old and I'm having way more fun with it.

The last straw was: getting a bounty in Saint Denis, riding all the way to Rhodes to get rid, get back to Saint Denis and a stupid bitch practically dives in front of my horse, so I pick up another bounty. Bounties only seem to actually matter in Saint Denis, which might fitting to the theme, but it's fucking annoying.

Post subject:  Re: Red Dead Redemption 2

I had this weird bug last night when I had to interrogate this bounty hunter I’d just got into a fist fight with. I had to press a button to straddle him and then, presumably, beat him till he gave up the locatation of the next thing. Only, I’d straddle him momentarily before he’d spaz about and then just get up and jump onto his horse to run away. It was the darnest thing. And the game locked up my abilities to throw a punch or get a gun out or even go to my menus, so despite the multiple retries he’d always get off the floor and escape .... but with half the dialogue continuing with Arthur talking angrily to himself like a drunk at a bus stop. I tried waiting for the dialogue to finish but the game wouldn’t move on and it wouldn’t let me leave the area; I’d try chasing him down on my horse but that instantly triggered a fail state; I’d try running after the guy on foot but he got miles away and the game would enter a fail state if I strayed too far from the area I was in and I got bored.

Fortunately, the Nintendo influences are strong and if you fail an area so many times you can skip a checkpoint and just continue on with the rest of the mission. Yay!

Another couple of hours and another bug.

Arthur has to go on this boat to play a rigged game of poker. Trelawny shows you onto the boat which has guards at the entrance. For some reason Trelawny lost his tracking and instead of walking to the entrance he walked past the entrance and ever so slightly brushed against the NPC guard. Of course Trelawny took exception to this and immediately starts fucking this guy up. He’s properly working this guy over. I was standing a fair way from the activities just walking as fast as the game would let me (veeeery slowly) and didn’t realise this fight wasn’t part of the scene until the “you failed” smashed onto the screen. Cue the slow walk to the boat again for 3 minutes as Trelawny managed to rein in his violent temper.

It's fine anyway. For a game with that much going on I ran into hardly any bugs over however many dozens of hours I spent on it, certainly nothing that caused me to load a save or anything. Zero crashes either, I only actually loaded the game twice the entire time, once when I started and again after we got a new telly.

I tried the online last night though and after half an hour I kept just falling through the world and plummeting into a void. But as Grim... says, beta.

This only makes sense if GTA V single player never received any patches. Which is not true, back in the day it had lots of fixes and tweaks and minor new content like cars and weapons. But it’s a four year old game. It’s not “abandoned”, it’s simply “done”. Meanwhile GTA Online has received tons and tons of free content. That’s hardly milking the cash cow. It’s just ongoing development of the type any MMO does.

As far as I can recall (fact-checked from a quick search), Rockstar only once in passing teased single player DLC for GTA, and said they’d never do it sometime in 2015. Everything else was just fan expectation hype frenzy. I don’t think that’s evil. Suckers, you played yo’self.

I don't remember the single player being all that long so having zero interest in GTA Online I'd have welcomed some more stories to play through in the same map. But I think generally people just sort of expected it because GTAIV got all that extra stuff.

To be fair to the Reddit moonbats, the industry has largely forgotten what a "Beta" means, leading to rubbish like Fallout 76s (not-a)beta being a selling point on preordering and being like two weeks from release giving the devs zero time to fix any bugs found.

"Beta" now means "early access to the finished game" to most people.

But to be fair to Bethesda, that was a perfectly legitimate beta test of the server infrastructure.
