I played the snowy tutorial bits last night. It's decent enough, but it's already slightly annoying. The fact you have to manually recock single-/lever-action guns winds me right up, especially as you automatically reload them when they're empty. Pick one, game.

I quite enjoy hunting in this. Also I met a big bastard bear that almost killed me, but luckily I had slug ammo for my double barrel. I also met Black Belle, which was entertaining..

I am enjoying this more than I though, but I also see where Jim Fucking Sterling, Son was coming from.

Once, but I shot the guy who pulled me off it and got it back. I think this was scripted.

Properly tying your horse down says it stops your horse being taken.

Yes, that's part of hunting, finding the correct animal... It's not like it's mechanically hard to do so. Can't really see what the complaint is.

When you do R1 to inspect, they have a star rating. 3* will get you a perfect pelt, if you also use the right weapon.

Yeah, it's nevrr happened to me, but I have heard of one perso finishing a quest and one of the actors getting on their horse and riding off.

As f9r hunting, oncE you've studied a type of animal, looking at their tracks in eagle eye will tell you the quality of the animal even if all you've seen are tracks. Also, binoculars will tell you, or just studying it.

It’s a funny old game this is.

For a start, Arthur is so facking clunky to operate. It doesn’t feel as much that I’m controlling him; I’m just pushing him around the screen.

There’s a certain amount of jank as well. I’m giving this black woman a kindly lift into town when I hit “something” in the road then sent us flying. She took this to be a deliberate action on my behalf and wouldn’t get back on the horse. I followed her for a bit but she just kept complaining I was a mad man. Then a cougar jumped out the bushes and mauled her to death. Meh.

Then I come across an escaped prisoner. I pressed the left trigger to talk to him but because I was holding a gun (albeit to the side) I accidentally pointed my gun at him. It was only for a split second but it clearly upset him as I couldn’t calm him down for a conversation after that.

So I thought fuck it, I’ll hog tie him and take him to the sheriff. Now this prisoner is decked out in full prison gear: black and white stripes, a hat, chains, the lot. So I shove him on the back of the horse and proceed to town. As I pass some rando he bolts off as WITNESS’ed crime pops up “Hostage taker”. I imagine I’ll explain it all to the sheriff if he turns up. Nope, he sends the cops to fuck me up when quite clearly I’m escorting an escaped convict.

Janky as fuck.

Yeah, 'talk to' and 'point gun at' being the same button isn't the greatest design choice.

No clue what you're on about with moving around though. It's slick as fuck.

Author:  Pundabaya [ Tue Nov 13, 2018 19:40 ]
Post subject:  Re: Red Dead Redemption 2

Other annoying things: the way Arthur keeps putting the fucking longarms back on the horse when you have the temerity to ride it for more than thirty fucking seconds. I'm sick of having to go back to the stupid horse because I've forgotten to re-equip the fucking bow. Or end up taking on a bunch of O'Driscolls with a revolver instead of the pump-action murder machine.

Some of the random events I have no idea how to meaningly interact with as a "good" Arthur. Like the prison wagon...

Whether disguises work or not seems arcane.

Relatedly, thanks game for giving me two mandatory bounties pretty early on. The first one I even made sure to disguise myself (completely) and was 10 times the biggest bounty I had got in regular play.

Controls scheme seems muddled. LT is aim except when it's RT, and I've... negligently discharged more often than I would want to, once into the butcher at Valentine... (I let him beat me to death). I mean it's realistic, in those days the safeties that existed were horribly unreliable, but...

Sure, but that's what I'm saying. I'm very used to the GTA controls and was (for obvious reasons) expecting them here. So it controls exactly as I would expect it to, which is great.

Yeah it's fine, the way he moves is not ultra responsive but I'm not sure they could do that without making it look fucking stupid in third person.

Huh? Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Metal Gear Solid 5, Spider-Man, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Destiny 2, DayZ, PUBG, Fortnight and a ton of third person games do just fine with far more responsive controls with no noticeable detriment to the animations.

11 ms isn’t high lag. It’s less than one frame. GTA IV had 125 ms, that was high lag.

No, some of those have the character twitching about impossibility fast but because of the game it doesn't matter. But I can't say I've found it noticeably different to Uncharted. I found it was the same in that game, when there's stuff around you get used to giving a command and waiting to see what's going to actually happen.

Post subject:  Re: Red Dead Redemption 2

To be fair, I watched to see what he said about the controls and it’s only 3 minutes long (the youtubers voice and speed isn’t too bad either. It’s not annoyingly ponderous like some ‘tubers “reviews”). He’s right about the control, shooting and snapping to cover too although it’s not particularly in depth.

TLDW: controlling Arthur is clunky, shooting is clunky and you’ll be relying on shooting from cover and auto aiming directly to a target with no skill and Arthur doesn’t “snap” to cover, if he decides to take cover at all.

Author:  Cras [ Wed Nov 14, 2018 10:31 ]
Post subject:  Re: Red Dead Redemption 2

I've never known an attempt to go into cover not to work, it seems close to perfect. I agree on the auto-aim, though it targets centre mass, so if your opponent is behind cover you have to manually aim or you're just shooting at whatever they're ducked behind.

Not unless you can make the controls more responsive by gitting gud.

And Cras saying the cover system is perfect is just nonsense. I’ve got hours on RDR2 and I’ve had loads of times when I’ve pressed the R-bumper and nothings happened. Usually during a gunfight when I need to take cover. I’ve played enough games (both great and shit) to recognise when something is wrong and there’s something wrong here and it’s not isolated either; it’s gathering more complaints since the game has been public’s hands. I’m enjoying RDR2 but it’s inspite of the niggles I’m having with the controls. The controls are certainly not “slick as fuck” “great” or “perfect” and no one outside this forum appears to be pretending that’s the case.
