The issue with stuff like that is it doesn't make me any more interested in the game. I mean, they had thousands of semi-slaves toiling away on this game for years so yeah, they can have this thing where your guy shoots into the air and a bird drops out of the sky, but what has it got to do with playing a videogame? (Yeah I know, it's all part of the AMAZING WORLD THAT ROCKSTAR CRAFTED (with their army of slaves), the Pyramids are pretty cool to look at too.)

Who knows, maybe they've accurately modelled bird paths in the skybox, and what we're seeing there is an incredibly rare occurrence, or maybe there's a flat 5% chance that a bird will drop out of the sky if you shoot into the air - either way it's a total non-entity IMO when it comes to what makes for a cohesive and compelling videogame.

I...it was just kinda amusing.

Started to play it finally and some of the animations are blowing me away. The cold horse shaking in the snow was awesome.

Plus the snow is awesome: Uncharted 4 & God of War levels of awesome. The blood in the snow from a firefight looks terrific.

Still it feels like hard work walking about, working the cameras and aiming - like moving through treacle. Here’s my tip-tip-tippity-tip: turn the sensitivity up on everything to get rid of that feeling. You’re welcome.

And trees. It’s got some damn fine trees. I always say you can tell a quality game if you’ve got good trees. Trees that bend in the fierce winds. Damn fine trees.

I watched him be wrong about hunting and then wrong about your horse moving off on its own, then gave up, although I was quite surprised I made it past the "lip service" bit.

If it helps you, Hearthly, we're all really sorry we're enjoying this game.

You're going to be really annoyed when you realise it magically finds its way back onto your horse if you drop it.

Yes I'm entirely serious, if by 'pissing on chips' the suggestion is that I'm deliberately trying to somehow spoil others' enjoyment by throwing stinkbombs into the room.

The backstory behind RDR2's development cycle genuinely bothers me, even though I fully accept it's far from unique. On top of that I don't like the look of the game anyway, didn't like the first one, and commentators/reviewers whose opinions I respect have explained in considerable detail aspects of the game I know I wouldn't find enjoyable.

I mean, this is a forum right? There's a clue in the name? I'm not calling anyone a cunt or trying to troll up the place, simply having a chat with other folks who love videogames, about videogames.

If I'm coming across as trying to 'piss on chips', then I apologise, as that's certainly not my intention.

If we're only supposed to chat in threads where we agree with everyone else, then just update the forum rules to reflect that.

There is a wider point in play... If the kind of pointless "realism" shown here becomes the next big thing, gaming will be worse off.

That's just stupid. If realism replaces gameplay, then absolutely, where's the fun in that? But it plainly doesn't. The game is supremely enjoyable right from the start, and does all that against an incredibly impressive backdrop.

It does sound a lot like you've very much made up your mind, and are determined to say how much you don't like a game you haven't played. Metacritic has the game at well over 90% - a video of one guy complaining about it with nothing else in the post is fine, but it would be incredibly easy to counter with 15 videos saying the opposite, and that's not 'chatting on a forum'.

Fair comment, but I'd made lots of 'proper' posts to this thread prior to that, I'd just watched the video myself and was getting ready for bed, and felt it was a decent opinion piece that articulated some of my own feelings, so I posted the link here.

As you correctly note I haven't played the game myself, but I've played nearly all Rockstar games since forever, and I put a good amount of time into the first RDR before hitting the point where I realised I just wasn't enjoying it. I know how their stuff works well enough so it's not like I'm commenting on something I know nothing whatsoever about through indirect experience and knowledge.

I've also read, absorbed, and considered posts by all other BEEXers in this thread, such as Trooper's post here:

https://www.beexcellenttoeachother.com/ ... 6#p1003636

Which is surely familiar comment to anyone who's played a Rockstar open-world game before, I mean, they haven't got any better at this shit since GTA3.

(i.e. I'm not just coming in to try and troll up the thread, I've read every single post to this thread and considered its contents.)

(Additionally Jim Sterling isn't just complaining about the game, he saw out the campaign and says he very much enjoyed that experience, but he has a good number of issues with the the experience as a whole.)

Anyway, hopefully this post passes muster as chatting on a forum.

I can answer all of my questions now too, but it doesnt change my initial confusion. I still think it is a triumph despite the controls and confusion, and could have been so much better in that respect.

The realism I don't have a problem with, there seems to be this overarching opinion that a game can only be good if you can get through it quickly and with the minimum of fuss. Why does a game have to have quick animations to be fun to play? What's wrong with things taking a bit of time?

WHAT is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare?—
No time to stand beneath the boughs,
And stare as long as sheep and cows:
No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass:
No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night:
No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance:
No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began?
A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

Well that’s simply abject nonsense. GTA V has distinctly clearer core mechanics and better controls than any of the preceding games. The addition of a weapon wheel alone was a significant step forward. IV added cover mechanics, if I recall correctly, which was another big step forward. In fact it turns out that with 5-8 years between each game, each one is actually a big step forward. Who’d have thought it.

So I was chatting to a chum over lunch and he asked me if I'd bought RDR2, as he was enjoying it. Trying not to load the question in any way I said, 'Isn't it a bit slow and meandering?', to which he replied, 'Not if you play it like a complete bellend'.

So far he's on his third horse as they keep dying, (Goatse and Gape are sadly no longer with us, Tatters is in poor shape, 'As in, I left your mum's arsehole in tatters', he helpfully clarified. Apparently the game won't let you call your horse Cunt), he's got a massive bounty on his head and can't really go anywhere, he's got no money, all his guns are shagged and his camp is completely plain and everyone is unhappy.

His favourite thing to do is charge head on into any other person on a horse he sees to watch them go flying around, and he enjoys lassoing people off their horses, killing them, and then disposing of their bodies in the river.

As he is now pretty much bankrupt, all his shit is broken, and his third horse is on the brink of death, he has conceded he might have to start again.

You also can't call your horse "Sarah Jessica Parker", which is pretty lul-some.

Last night I went after the Arabian horse up in the mountains. Found the bastard, spent about 40mins trying to calm it and get on it and break it. It kicked me off about 10 times forcing me to chase after it. Finally broke it in the end as I was not going to be defeated by a horse, trotted back to the track with my other horse in tow and a pack of wolves came and ate me and when I respawned the horse was gone. 10/10 game.

I took my slags into town yesterday. They got themselves into a spot of bother which I had to sort out with my fists. I went to have a chat with some drunkard in a bar and by the time I’d got out the slags has gone back home and took the coach with them. Sans horse I decided to thumb a lift home. This nice bloke took me some 20 yards to a crossroads before he decided he wasn’t going my way so I had to drive my feet back to camp. On the way home I had a chat with an old guy and his two useless kids trying to build a house. His children had soft hands and dropped the beams causing some tension in the family. The eldest lad was annoyed at me blatantly half-inching their canned goods in full view of them but a pistol butt to the nose sorted that out. Back on the road it was dark by then but the lights of the camp eventually showed me the way home.

I’m playing it with the radar off and just the compass. Do a quick tap of the D-pad down and the radar will flash up if you need it. Cleans up the screen no end. No UI is the way to play.

As I started reading this I thought "what the hell?!?"

That was when I realised that I hadn't clicked on the Nay thread.
