I met a man in a bar who wants me to find gunslingers, I went to find one that was all the way back in the mountains where we started, got cold, met a guy who wanted help, who stole my horse, so I shot him in the back while he was riding off, found a bear being harassed by wolves, shot the bear in the head with an arrow, this pissed him off, got mauled by a bear, fought him off and shot him in the face, I now have a bear pelt on my horse, get attacked by wolves, horse freaks, horse throws me, I now have 2 wolf pelts on my horse, camp overnight, find guy in his camp, they don't want me there, I defuse situation by shooting a dude in the face, shit goes down and I murder some folks, dude is hiding in cabin and I call him out and have a gunfight, I now have a new gun with fancy engraving and his treasure map, take a leisurely ride back to camp in cinematic mode and donate my bear pelt, everyone is very impressed, I go to sleep.

Hopefully they'll have had a nice holiday with their huge bonuses by then, with it being the game of the century.

I get that different people like different things so this is clearly a subjective opinion on my part, but the more reviews I watch and read of this game (and they're universally positive as far as I can see), the less inclined I feel to buy the game and play it. (Not that I would anyway because ROCKSTAR PROTEST, that'll learn 'em.)

Indeed, the very things that are being held up as awesome about the game are an active turn off for me.

On top of that, everyone seems to agree that the controls are a hot mess, that your character and horse control like they're wading through treacle (GTA3 was a fucking long time ago Rockstar!), that the game has a sort of epic and meandering scope where you make your own story to an extent, and that a lot of the sub systems (hunting and suchlike) are opaque and inconsistently implemented.

That said, the XBox One X version appears to be an absolute technological triumph, the 4K videos of it on YouTube look sumptuous, I just wish they'd gone to all that effort on a world I felt inclined to dive into.

I mean, horses are shit really, stupid great lumbering things with the brains of a chipmunk.

In my 10 hours or so of the game the things that Hearthly mentions as bad above aren't in the least bit true. The controls are fine (except for the fact that my GTA brain keeps using the 'shoot rando in front of me' button to make my horse go), hunting is easy and fun, and maneouvering around is pretty slick.

Poker is pretty broken. I mean, it's a fine game of poker, but all your opponents are God awful at it (they're shit-hot at dominos, though). And sometimes your horse crashes in hilarious ways.

Oh, and there's quite a few instances of things clipping though other things, especially in cutscenes. And someone called the police on me for bumping into them, ffs.

But the reason those things like that (and the controls and the movement, although I have no idea what's wrong with the hunting) stand out so much isn't becuase they're especially bad, it's because they're not nigh-on perfect. And actually the movement is fine.

Bystanders call the police on you *when an NPC throws the first punches*.

Though while watching someone play yesterday this did lead to a hilarious sequence of "god damnit, now I have to try and stop this other bystander reporting /that/" and "oh shit, look at all the bounty hunters ever!" escalations.

It all started with letting the sheep out of the pens at the market.

I'd be way more likely to play this game if, for no reason explained in the plot, all the cowboys rode dirt bikes instead.

I'd pay extra. If they had £20 DLC which replaced all the horses with dirtbikes I'd be all in. It might help with some of the pacing issues if your faithful steed had a top speed of 100mph and off road tyres and suspension too.

Yeah, I tried to de-escalate a couple of O'Driscolls beating a guy up on the outskirts of Valentine, and they killed him and pulled on me. I shot them both and a dude runs to the police and I get a murder rap.

Then I shot four lawmen getting away, which didn't exactly help.

I rode into town with the intent of stealing a wagon. On the way I accidentally had a head on horse crash with a rando which floored my horse and sent me sprawling in the mud. After laboriously picking myself up I find I'm being fired on by the other party in the accident and done helpful bystanders. I pulled my gun but only sprinting off and falling in a ditch saved my life and somehow it was me that ended up with a $30 bounty on my head!

Possibly, probably have to hold L1 and R2, tap left while pressing L3 and then hold square and tap triangle, or something.
(in a fist fight it goes into a brawl mode mini game kinda thing, so you can't just walk away)

The issue with stuff like that is it doesn't make me any more interested in the game. I mean, they had thousands of semi-slaves toiling away on this game for years so yeah, they can have this thing where your guy shoots into the air and a bird drops out of the sky, but what has it got to do with playing a videogame? (Yeah I know, it's all part of the AMAZING WORLD THAT ROCKSTAR CRAFTED (with their army of slaves), the Pyramids are pretty cool to look at too.)

Who knows, maybe they've accurately modelled bird paths in the skybox, and what we're seeing there is an incredibly rare occurrence, or maybe there's a flat 5% chance that a bird will drop out of the sky if you shoot into the air - either way it's a total non-entity IMO when it comes to what makes for a cohesive and compelling videogame.
