I had them all already. Any that were on Flickr were cherry picked from my collection.

I decided to close after reading that Flickr had been acquired by SmugMug, which may be an awesome place but sadly, I hate the name. I'm oot!

wtf

They're not likely to rename flickr, in the same way it's still called "flickr" and not "Yahoo! Photos!".

I've been fixin' to reduce my online footprint lately anyway, and flickr was just next on the chopping block. This SmugMug thing just reminded me about it.

I had a leaf through my old Yahoo email account before I nuked it. Maxed out with spam. Sad. I remember the old yahoo chat days. Such innocence.

She's super happy with Ruth's folks though, so the only real downside is that we all miss her! I'm hoping she actually remembers me :)

WTF wtf? BA first is shit too. Neither hold a candle to Singapore Business Class. The fact BA business requires the person in the inside seat to climb over your feet while you sleep on a shelf of a bed should say everything. 2/4/2 vs 1/2/1 FFS.

BA Business is infinitely better if none of Singapore's planes fly your route! Also: just how tight are your diamond shoes?

Sure, that's bad, but also the last backwards-facing seat in each part of the cabin doesn't have to do that. And you get a lovely private little space.

Once you’re in the air can you tell if you’re going backwards or forwards? I mean, I’m sure you can when tge plane is running along the ground or at take off, but once you’re in the clouds, if you couldn’t see out of the window would you be able to ‘sense’ which way the plane is pointed?

only of it changes vector I think due to you conserving your momentum.otherwise you are in a pressurised tube breathing in people's farts whilst the cabin crew judge you.

Whenever possible, I always pick the rear-facing seat on trains. Find it much more relaxing than facing forward. Would love to sit like that in planes, but it's very uncomfortable and annoys other passengers if you try to position yourself appropriately in economy class.

IIRC, the reason that Air France plane that went down was (inter alia) that the pilots couldn’t work out what direction they were moving in, though that was more an up/down issue that anything.

There was the annual conference in Birmingham at the weekend I think, which is why it is trending.

I assume the ones who actually believe it are mentally ill in some way. I don't mean that as a derogatory statement btw, but I have no other way of understanding why they believe something so obviously false to any rational state of mind.

I know what you mean, insofar as a delusion is viewed as a mental illness. Surely a lot of people join in for the japes, though.

Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs 49

They aren't mentally ill, it's really only a hop away from not believing in evolution but yet huge swathes of people don't buy into that idea either and I don't think they could all be diagnosed with an illness. Some people just lack the imagination to truly understand anything that they cannot see with their own eyes, to join any dots at all. Most of them are just happy to go along with what they get told and so it doesn't really matter most of the time because they're informed by people they trust that the earth is round. But then they get on the fucking internet and all hell breaks loose.

Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs 49

Believing in conspiracy theories is utterly seductive and I can see why people do. It's trying to make sense of the world that is horrible and wonderful and they would rather believe in convoluted theories than face up to reality. We are programmed to look for order in chaos; to see patterns in random acts.

Author:  markg [ Tue May 01, 2018 22:03 ]
Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs 49

I can buy that as an explanation for belief in some theories but surely the most ordered and least chaotic thing to believe regarding the shape of the planet is that it is spherical. Indeed what you have proposed is exactly what a flat earther would cite as the main reason we all believe that it is.

Perhaps. I thought serious delusional beliefs were a mental illness, but that may have changed, or I’m just mistaken.

It’s just a bit boggling that with the wealth of proof, including their eyes that can see at least two huge spherical bodies in the sky every day, not to mention a wealth of photographic and scientific proof, that anyone could think it was just a huge worldwide conspiracy. So I think over 99% if flat earthers must *surely* go along for the joke, and they are all just jollying each other along, as well as those one or two true believers, who have a true delusion. In which case wouldn’t the japers be somewhat cruel in feeding this delusion and fear of conspiracy.

Also those chemtrail people Mali is always re-tweeting. I’m pretty sure Mali is to blame for me knowing about the flat-earthers, too.

As I understand it, the way we are taught about the vanishing point of vision over distance is part of the conspiracy. It isn't a straight line to our eyes, it's actually more vision on the top of the plane than the bottom, so what looks like the bottom of the ship disappearing is actually it just getting further away. The convergence point is higher up on the object, so the bottom disappears first, or something.

See, makes perfect sense if you think laws of physics are the part of the conspiracy, you can change them to support any theory.

Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs 49

I think there's a big difference between delusional beliefs that originate in the mind i.e. self-delusion and lacking the critical faculties and basic knowledge to know what kinds of sources are reliable.

Theres a pretty frightening number of adults who, whilst they might accept that the earth is round, are surprised to learn that the sun is just a nearby star. It's easy to see how you could convince them of all sorts if you sound like you know what you're on about.

Author:  Mimi [ Tue May 01, 2018 22:40 ]
Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs 49

You’re right, MarkG. I guess it’s difficult to dial your mind back to a point where it might be swayed on such a fundamental understanding, and so it’s hard to imagine anyone else being convinced.

I still think the number of actual believers must be very, very small, and the majority just jokers. Or maybe that’s just being hopeful.
