A friend of mine has her citizenship ceremony today. Despite often joking about it, I couldn't quite bring myself to go into one of Oxford's many gift shops to buy a St George's Flag, a picture of Will 'n' Kate, and today's 'Sun'. I went to the bookshop and picked up a copy of '1066 and All That' instead. Far better consolidation of our history than that offered by the citizenship test.

Still tempted to go to the dodgy fake Wetherspoon's across the road, however.

I've just heard that from the Autumn the tradition of sharing a cabin with a stranger on the Caledonian Sleeper will end. Well, that's priced out getting to the Highlands easily by rail for me, and probably many other single travellers. I've never had an issue with sharing as it's nowhere near as bad as an eight-room dorm in a youth hostel, and getting to know a stranger is part of the fun of the journey. Admittedly, last time I took it, I did overhear my cabinmate say on his phone that I 'didn't look like a maniac', so perhaps he had had poor experiences in the past.

The Lovely Mrs Squirt sent me a single text message on Saturday saying "Will you come to the Hornet Gathering?" which sounded like either the least fun rural tradition ever, or some sort of terrifying black magic ritual. Actually, it was just an auto-correct of the Godney Gathering, a small music festival in Somerset. I'm actually a little disappointed.

Anyone used Amazon Pantry? How does it compare with other online shopping options?

I'm thinking about filling a box with all the tedious cleaning stuff I always run out of and never remember to pick up when I go shopping.

I used the pantry thing to bulk order a load of wine etc last year for a party, seemed ok. I do make use of amazon's subscribe & save to order cat food and other boring bits which then just gets delivered bob on time every month - it's bloody brilliant. Wish the supermarkets like tesco etc would do a recurring order thing.

That was a really uncomfortable read. I’m glad I DID read it, but I found it difficult. The perfunctory diary entries about the babies and other things made me feel very uneasy.

Apologies - I should probably have made that clearer (I've added a note) - I found it fascinating and yes the early parts about the way that death and childbirth is handled can be quite jarring
