You need 18 out of 24 to pass.

I scraped through with 18 and these tests are a farce and should be abolished.

I think there really is a place for a test like this, asking practical questions about living in the U.K. and covering things you really need to know to make it easy to live here. Not this history and sport bullshit.

There was a question about typical British values and 'queuing' wasn't one of the answers. FFS.

I doubt that very many native Britons could tell you much about the Chartists, or the timeline of early Christianity.

I mean, these kind of tests should be used to show how well someone is or is going to get to grips with the culture. The questions should have a lot less of "The Government has used their power to devolve the Irish Assembly, True or False"

That's a complete crapshoot right there.

Or what year were movies first shown in the UK (a later test).

1896, for the curious.

Nah, it should be:
You are applying for a driving license. Which of these places can you get the form?
A) By phone to the DVLA
B) The local town hall
C) The post office
D) Chicken Cottage

Useful shit.

I got 18, just scraped it. :D

I happen to think we *do* need a test regarding living in the UK, it's just that this one is so absurd.... who gives a flying fuck about Mo Farrah running some sack-race faster than some bunch of other people, and which luvvies have won gongs at the latest film-fest? What possible, or indeed practical relevance is this to anyone whatsoever, let alone would-be new entrants to the UK?

So, sound idea but very poor execution.

Yes, they randomise the order though.

This is pulled from the 2017 set of questions I believe, as it changes each year naturally.

So what questions should we have instead?

I like the idea of there being one about queueing.

On a packed commuter train, how many conversations would you reasonable expect to strike up in a 1 hour journey?
- 0
- 1-2
- 3-4
- over 4

Where the answer is clearly 0 leave me alone thank you very much also no eye contact it makes me uncomfortable.

I got 17/24 and therefore failed.

One of the questions is "Who appoints "life peers"?"

I'd watched a Politics Unboringed video on the House of Lords last week that said that life peers were chosen by the Prime Minister, so naturally I went with that as a choice.

But no, they're appointed by the Monarch on the advice of the prime minister - so basically, by the Prime Minister then. What a pointless distinction on a question that has absolutely no bearing on life in the UK.

The reason I said there should be a test is because it provides a way to give people learning materials and a reason to learn the things they actually need to know. Like what their rights are if questioned by police, or how tax and benefits work.

That is about as far from British values as I can imagine.

Make her a nice cup of tea, take her for some fish and chips or a Sunday dinner, and buy her a top with the shoulders mysteriously cut out of it.

It's raining. Do you:

(a) Stoically conduct a BBQ in heavy showers (preferably holding an umbrella over the grill for an entire cooking period), Pimms very optimistically in hand, with rainwater trickling down one's neck.

(b) Quite sensibly call off the BBQ.

If it's (b), bugger off. :D

But to be serious, do people actually think 'Britishness' is defined by leering tabloid gutter press headlines, football and fucking Wetherspoons? We're better than that.

Perhaps this lack of pride is part of our problem as a nation; I don't see the French, Italians or Germans having such a downer about themselves. It's actually pretty sad because (IMO) this is a great country, and people *should* take pride. Bloody negativity and abject pessimism wherever you look.
