This is excellent news, also because I thought that Ubisoft nowadays could only make the "Icon-cleaning game", and this is a showing that they can take more risks. Anyway, i still haven't played FC4 (even though loved FC3, blood dragon, but thought Primal was meh), so i might play FC5 in 2025.

Reviews have dropped, they are good-to-great across the board.

Most of the criticism are (a) doesn't do much new, very much more of the same (no worries, I liked 3 and 4 plenty) and (b) story is all over the place (that was also true of 3 and 4 eg. weird drug orgy sex scene thing in FC3 and the general awfulness of the main character in both games).

FYI I am very stealth-heavy when I take down bases, I am sure this will not present a problem with your approach which I am confident is crafted entirely from subtlety and nuance

If you're the type to sneak around undetected with a bow making silent kills, well you'll have a distraction at least.

My copy turned up this morning. Had a quick go but I only had time to kill a man with a shovel. It was good, though.

In 3 and 4 I pulled off some mad long-shot kills with the bowsT. I reckon I did more kills with the bows than everything else put together.

Here's a 75+ metre kill, first few seconds of the video:

I'll definitely get this, but not for a while. I'm generally okay with 'more of the same' but it doesn't feel like that long ago I played 4 so I'll wait until I'm less likely to suffer Far Cry-fatigue.

My FC4 tactics were typically

1) let loose the rampaging animals
2) blow up everything that is capable of blowing up
3) walk through the front gate and gat fools

I do step 3, step 1 then step 2 because style counts.

You walk into the place that is both where the wild animals will rampage, and in the blast area of the explosives, then free the wild animals and set off the explosives? It's novel, I'll give you that.

Most of the time it goes like this:

There's the alarm should shoot it with silenced sniper gun. Shit, missed. Ah balls he is going to press it. Ah. He pressed it. Run run ok molotov out and away to my left and let's start the dakka dakka. Where the fuck did that bear come from? What exploded? Dakka dakka shit that bear is back dakka dakka base clear! Wait! Theres a fucking bear here come here murder mittens now die! Dakka dakka dakka

But the three step description is far cooler.

This article suggests you should upskill your beast handling skills first and foremost.

I think having any kind of NPC compadre would be more of a ballache than anything, but I'd imagine plenty would enjoy having their own personal attack bear.

There’s something like 9 different side kicks from dog, bear and sabrewulf to dude with gun and woman with gun. Plus you can pick up more fellas along the way to form your own gang of redecks. And bear.

Every review I've read has criticised it for being tonally all over the place and that it tries to make deeper statements than the writing is capable of.

Which is every Far Cry ever so seems an odd complaint to level at FC5.

I loved FC3 and 4 in spite of the writing and characters, not because of them.

Because the marketing went on and on and on about the statements it was going to make.

Ah, I hadn't paid too much attention to that.

Fair enough. I always felt the series has had ideas above its station in terms of social commentary and player agency. The writing has generally been piss poor aside from Vaas and Min. The gameplay was enjoyable enough to let it slide. But if they've tried to hitch their wagon more formally to being Something Important, then those criticisms are more valid.
