Post subject:  Buying a Nintendo DS
Yo.

The child is turning 6 at the weekend and wants to get a Nintendo DS with Pokemon Sun. So that is what she will get.

Sadly the bundles for that are twice the normal price on Amazon, so I am gonna get her a different bundle and a separate copy of Pokemon, to save money.

I'm also getting her the 2DS as she's only 6 and the 3DS is expensive.

Questions:
1) Which bundled game would a six year old like the most, do you think?
Tomodachi Life
New Super Mario Bros 2
Mario Kart 7

2) Are there any other, better, mega deals I can get via places other than Amazon?

3) What else might she like to go with it?

I've not owned a handheld Nintendo before, so this is all new to me.

P.S. I suspect she would like the Tomodachi game the most. I can see her getting more frustrated with Mario Kart, as much as I would like it.

If Nintendo have started actually including everything required to use the system, that's grand, but I'm still quite miffed at them for not including it with the 3DSXL, and I know that's not the only time they pulled this particular trick.

I'm sure I've got lots of recommendations for games but for now, have you actually held a 2DS? I'm sure it will be fine but the shoulder buttons seem a bit spaced out for small hands.

I have never held a DS of any type, so am unaware of how it would fit her. I'm sure she can get used to it. Pokemon doesn't need much in the way of digit-based agility does it? I have never played one.

Nah, it doesn't at all. You run about a fair bit and the combat is all turn based so it's really easy. Almost as if it was designed for children?

Did you mention Super Mario Maker? That's out for the 3DS and that could be a fun construction type affair? Depends how much she's into making her own Mario game I guess?

2D Mario games will be too hard and she'll throw it against the wall within five mins. Stick with Pokemon, Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing for now.

The 2DS is a good shout. No hinge to break and it's small enough for her tiny hands.

Which would be a way to teach about why not to have daft tantrums. (except with floor humping lizardmen, it's understandable in that case)

I'm also not sure there is a too hard for kids. It's doing them a disservice.

If your child has any experience with mobile gaming, she will probably find regular games mind numbly boring, because that's the experience I have with my nephews and sons of friends. If there was one thing that really made me mad was hearing my friend's 8 year old son yelling, THIS GAME IS BORING!!!, while playing Ocarina of Time in his 2ds.

But to be fair, the beginning of that game is kind of boring, like in all Zelda games.

I got my seven year old tomodachi when we took a train trip to france (she was 6 then), and she loved it..

mario maker she likes as well(wiiU), the lego games, and she's now learning 2d mario, since she played the iOS version to completion..

Cheers folks.

I've actually been quite remiss in not introducing the little one to much in the way of gaming. She does really like the very simple kids games she plays that are ridiculously easy, and ones where you dress up a little pet.

She gets annoyed and frustrated any time she doesn't win, so I 'look forward' to teaching her that's not how this works!
