I'm stopping playing this tonight simply because my gamepad battery is dying again. (It's still doing about five hours so not too bad really.)

This is such a lovely game, it's gentle and relaxing to play in the main, even though it'll kill you in an instant if you fuck something up, and the fights are very exciting. (In death terms so far it's been big falls, trying to fight something I'm really not equipped for, serious fail in one of the shrines etc, I've died loads of times already and I'm still in the starting zone, but I can't remember the last time I was so not in a hurry to progress, in fact it's the complete opposite, it's like, 'What else can I possibly do here before I venture into the next zone?')

It's not perfect, the controls are pretty clunky IMO, although that could just be my ineptitude with gamepads when it comes to third-person (and also first-person) games, both sticks, D-Pad, and all the buttons are used and often contextually as well, and the Wii-U gamepad has a lot of buttons.

Graphically it's pretty ropey, Nintendo have done a stunning job with the Wii-U hardware but there's no getting away from the fact it's a fairly unrefined 720p image at 30FPS, that drops down to 20FPS more often than you'd like, but hey, it's a an open-world Zelda game, so I forgive it completely. (The texture filtering is awful, it drops environment detail off a cliff face at any sort of distance, it's jaggy as fuck, the lighting and shadow models are flickery and crude etc, and yet you're still able to look around a massive open world environment Zelda game and it's immersive and believable, and that's all that matters.)

It's like, I think back to Zelda Link To The Past on the SNES back in the day, which I played to destruction, and wonder how I'd dare to even imagine that there could be a Zelda game like Breath Of The Wild one day, that the creativity and inspiration on show in Link To The Past, could be realised in something as gorgeous as this game at some point in the future.

What a remarkable last outing for the Wii-U, wonderful stuff.

Thank fuck for the digital revolution, and that console games don't come on horrible shitty old-fashioned cartridges with their pesky instantaneous loading and no installation requirements.

EDIT - It'd got down to 22 minutes, now it's gone up to 35 minutes.

EDIT AGAIN - It's just gone up to 36 minutes.

Fucking hell Nintendo.

I'm not even making this up.

54 MINUTES FUCK YOU.

They're really really good, mostly, but I do think there is a touch of nostalgia there too. I loved Ocarina of Time, it really is one of my favourite ever games. At the time it felt so epic and exciting, new and great, so I have a lot of strong emotional connections to that game (and the series).

However, without those previous positive connections and feelings, I'm not sure how well it'd stand up as there have been plenty of other epic, exciting games since I jumped on board the Zelda-train. Ocarina was great, for it's day, and introduced me to a lot, but also things have moved on a lot since then. I think that for a newcomer some of the mechanics in the older games might be a bit annoying and harder to overlook.

Where would you start though? I haven't played Breath of the Wild, but it seems like they've ditched a fair bit of the old habits (linear progression, locked off areas, overly hand-holding tutorials).

I've tried several, but never really got into any of them.

I got furthest on the Wii one, but only three hours or so.

Which one, Twilight Princess or Skyward Sword?

The one I've put most effort into is A Link Between Worlds and while I enjoyed aspects of it, not enough to finish it. I think I got about halfway.

I gave up on Skyward Sword because fuck the Wii and it's stupid bullshit controllers; which was gutting as I generally love Zelda games.

I've only properly played Link to the Past and Windwaker, the latter I enjoyed the most. Looked lovely and was nice bezzing about on the waves.

Others I've started and given up on - the first hour or three do tend to be fairly unexciting and clingy.

I loved FFX, it was another one of my top gaming experiences. I even cried a little bit at the end. But, it wasn't enough to really make me want to play any of the other FF games.

i've played a fair few zeldas, although I didn't finish them all for one reason or another.

- Link's Awakening (GB) - I got stuck in the penultimate dungeon and couldn't find the Fire Rod to melt the ice in the odd, jarring 2D platformer section.
- Ocarina of Time - Superb experience, finished it
- Majora's Mask - Got stuck for ages in the last temple and kept meaning to go back to it but never got round to it. The creepy, sad atmosphere in this game was excellent and the time mechanic was interesting
- Wind Waker - The art style was (while controversial at the time) amazing to me. FInished this one. I quite enjoyed the sailing. It did feel quite lonely.
- Twilight Princess - kinda meh, didn't really get far at all. Can't remember much about it.
- Phantom Hourglass (DS) - I really liked the revisiting of the central dungeon and getting a bit further each time. FInished this one. It was good.

I think so too - but it seems like this new one has tackled a lot of that.

Like windwaker, for a while, the finish cap (gba), because it was nice and compact, and going on the train in the phantom hourglass... just played enough of the twilight princess, to use the hack... generally i'm already bored in the on boarding stages... but this seems quite nice..

Played FFVII and FFX to death but have since gone off the series, although I did buy the remake of FFX/X-II, but never checked the specs - I don't currently have enough space to actually install them :)

I think the only Zelda games I've started are Ocarina and Wind Waker, but never had the urge to complete either.

Completed VII through X, which were all good. Also, less good: X-2 (annoying poppy), XII (poor combat and forgettable plot) and XIII (poor world design, terrible combat, duff levelling system, awesome Afro) also Played through the Japanese version of the X remaster. Which didn't have a poo dub.

Zeldawise, completed windwaker (bestest) , ocarina, LttP, twilight princess, minish cap. Couldn't beat the fish boss in majoras mask (but I loved the game, second bestest)

I was going to write a post about how Breath Of The Wild really isn't like this, but then an article appeared on Eurogamer explaining exactly that :)

In a way it'd be good if Nintendo just 'did a Sega' and got out of the console business, to focus on software, then they could release this game on every format.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017- ... generation

Quote:
When Oli reviewed Breath of the Wild he pointed something that's fundamental to its divergence from other Zelda games. "It's the first Nintendo game that feels like it was made in a world where Half-Life 2, Halo, Grand Theft Auto 3 and Skyrim happened," he said. And there's another game on which Breath of the Wild seems to have an eye: Minecraft.

Quote:
The result is a wonderful sense of adventure and mystery. It feels like you're out alone in this vast land, with only your wits to help you, even though you're constantly guided by the invisible hands of Breath of the Wilds' designers. Hyrule is carefully laid out with encounters and puzzles, scenarios learned from three decades of Zelda dungeon design implicitly teaching the properties of its items, and there's a largely obvious critical path you can follow through the world (if you want to).

I've just been playing this on my lunch break and it's still brilliant.

I came to a section where I had to operate a giant maze from above. There was a ball in it that I needed to get out and I was using the motion controls so swinging the Switch about. Because it's a handheld, I was moving it about and lost sight of the screen so I detached the controllers, and placed the screen down on my dashboard.

I was then able to use the controller on it's own to maneuver the maze but best of all, I was able to flip the controller 180 degrees which flipped the maze and gave me a completely flat surface to which the ball (when it spawned again) was able to roll off to where I needed it to be.

I saw something on twitter earlier about WiiU copies being hard to find in the shops so I urgently ordered a copy from Amazon because I'm, apparently, very impressionable. Time to bum it hard.

Game critic. Used to be the chief guy at Destructoid and had his video series The Jimquisition on The Escapist. Has since struck out on his own and posts stuff both on YouTube and his website funded largely by Patreon. His Jimquisition videos are mostly consumer advocacy (i.e. spotlighting shady shit from game publishers and developers) and his other stuff is either straight reviews or ripping the piss out of the awful shit that makes up a lot of Steam's Greenlight programme.

A link to the review. beware the crying fanboys

Jim is entirely independent, and has to go out and buy copies of games for review from several companies (EA and Square Enix Japan, and of course Konami) due to his 'Wild Card' status. (IE giving out review scores lower than 9 or 10).

Ugh, I'd completely forgotten about the fucking bullshit stamina system from the last Zelda game until that review reminded me. And Jim's chat about weapons breaking confirms what I'd feared when I watched some videos of the combat.

Hilariously the comments on that page are no longer viewable because that aspect of the site's run out of memory.

I was expecting that review to be full of bile and hate but I'm pleasantly surprised. He does make some fair points but none of which make it a terrible game. The weapons that break is annoying. No two ways about that but the stamina wheel and the rain are all things that are easily managed.

Personally I think the game deserves a higher score but I can see from his writing that it's a good game and he did enjoy it... just with a few niggles.

Jim's scoring system is like Amiga Power and Edge, 5 is average. The fanboys tossing death threats don't understand this.

Let's not pretend he's the second coming of the Messiah. I've watched a fair few of his videos and I find him to be a fucking irritating self aggrandising cockbag.
