I would have glued it back together, yeah. But you should! Be too expensive to post on.

…and it might break

Yeah get your Repair Shop on. PVA would work really well for that if it's ceramic. Much cleaner than epoxy.

Fine fine fine. Look, I’m easily influenced.

One has big pieces missing. I assume they were in the DHL van as when he bought the first package the box was spilt open as well as having footprints on it. Anyway, there’s too much missing to piece it back together.

There were a few small pieces missing from this second one, but nothing like the first. So I’ve pieced together what I can and got glue all over myself. I’m one quarter of the way to getting my Repair Shop scouts badge. I Just need to put some filler in the gaps after it’s set, paint it, then make someone’s grandad cry.

The one on the left was the one that arrived undamaged. The one on the right was the one that I fixed as best I could. You couldn't tell if it were on display, but if you picked it up and had a look you'd see the remaining damage. There's a hole about the size of a 5p piece underneath and a piece missing from one of his legs. The lamp was for the dining room, though I have grown quite font of seeing him in the living room, so I may fill those damaged areas and paint him to give him a slightly different look.

I do have some bronze mica, so I could re-bronze him.

PLUS this is grim up north pricing! The timber was £142, the saws and screws and delivery took it to £170.

The Bluetooth amp is tiny! I knew it would be small but not quite this small. Excellent sound for the money though.

Post subject:  Re: What have you bought?

Without wanting to sound like a total idiot, what does that do, Z? I remember having an amplifier as part of a hifi set up when I was a kid, but I didn’t understand what it actually did. Like… why did the hifi not output directly to the speaker?

Sorry if this is a ridiculous question.

Author:  Malc [ Sun Mar 05, 2023 12:22 ]
Post subject:  Re: What have you bought?

An amplifier just amplifies the signal, ie it just makes it louder.

Have you ever plugged headphones into a "line out" socket by mistake, and struggled to hear what was playing? That's what the hi-fi produces, so you need an amplifier to "boost" the signal so that you hear it properly.

Some hi-fi setups will have the amplifier built in, and some speakers will also have an amp built in to them, but if you're the sort of person who cares about their setup, you probably want to control exactly what you have, so you have a separate device for each job. (amplifier, radio receiver, cd player, record player, tape deck, whatever)

Post subject:  Re: What have you bought?

Not a ridiculous question at all, Malc has covered it there really. I wanted one like that as I’d bought some lovely (passive*) Mission speakers and thought they’d be good in my workshop but so wanted something small that wouldn’t take up much room on my tabletop that could plat music from my phone via Bluetooth. So this was perfect.

*needs an amplifier to drive them

Post subject:  Re: What have you bought?

Ah, thank you both for the explanation. I was given a set of Seles rates by someone who was really into audio stuff when I was a teen, and it had a separate amplifier unit, so I’ve used one but never really understood it’s purpose, but yes, I get that now.

I’ve had nothing like that since. Now I just have my phone and one of those little Anker speakers, but my Simon & Garfunkel and Cat Stevens don’t often get played at loud volume :D

I think £35 is pretty reasonable. If you're anything like me they're worn a massive amount, and some are warmer and comfier than others.
