I bought this stereo yesterday for the princely sum of £139. It kind of looked OK on display in Currys but on getting it home I realised what a cheapy piece of crap it is. That said it's only for the telly/laptop upstairs so it'll do.

Out of the box the sound was appallingly bad, it had some ridiculous MEGA BASS thing turned on by default and a shit EQ profile. Turning everything off and letting the sound be as 'normal' possible salvaged it to sounding passable.

It's to replace a venerable old AIWA hi-fi that has done 20 years service so can't really complain on that. (Twin tapedecks, triple slot CD player!)

I could have spent more but the limiting factors were (a) Stuff that Currys actually had in stock as I wanted it immediately and (b) Getting something reasonably durable as it's down on the floor so I didn't want anything too small or delicate.

Mrs Hearthly and Jnr watched The Incredibles with the sound going through the hi-fi and pronounced it to have been a satisfying aural experience.

The lights on the front cycle through three different colours.

EDIT - Oh yes the speaker cables are comically short, literally about a metre long, if that.

Nope, we've only got a population of about 84K so there's a limit to what sort of business is viable.

There are a couple of independent chain electrical stores I could have taken a look at, but I couldn't be bothered.

It's OK for what will be asked of it, and with all the daft MEGA THIS and DYNAMIC THAT turned off, the basic sound output isn't too bad.

Modern stereos are so nasty. Such a shame. I saw this on Facebook the other day for £50.

I think it is you complaining about lights on a stereo, when you put more leds in a PC than is humanly possible

I can turn them all off, though. And usually do unless I am taking photos.

I like my stereos to be nice and plain. Well, apart from the glow from the valves.

I've bought a PlayStation classic. The choice of games isn't great but I should be able to fix that. The console itself is lovely.

After reading reports of iffy emulation there was no way I was going to pay nearly £100 for one, but now that they are easy to hack and plummeting in price I'm way more tempted. Will be interested to read how you get on.

I did indeed.

I've just been playing with it and within minutes, I had put a new game on it. It's quite straight forward and works absolutely fine. I ripped a disc game which I already own and was able to play it with no problems and even use the save states that the Playstation classic does within it's own OS.

I only paid £50 for it off Amazon and put some Christmas money towards it but so far, I'm happy. The pads are nice and I can see me using those on my PC with MAME too.

So yeah, would it be worth £90 or however much they originally wanted? I'd say no.. but for £50, I'm fine. Being able to play with save states is pretty much everything I wanted in my time restricted adult life.

But of course.

You could and that's something that I would have done in the past but there's something nice about using the new hardware that's dedicated to playing PS1 games. Also, the controllers are lovely.

I usually get 8 or even 16gb micro SD cards but I fancied having most of my music collection on this phone.

Image

Also treated it to a 2.8a charger.

Image

Then I decided whilst I was board swapping my triad Alienware I would get matching fans as they are all odds and sods in there ATM.

Image

£36.99 for the whole kit. It even comes with a proper distro box/controller, though not addressable (at that price I couldn't give a toss)

Image

And of course this.

The Saturday before Christmas I noted that there was too much crap and not enough worktop space in my kitchen.

Since Christmas Day I’ve bought a new knife block (twice as big as the previous one), new silicone utensils in a stand and an avaya sous vide immersion cooker.

They're quite good apparently.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBoLOQyzHb8&t=222s

You can change the fan speed on the remote. They look like a complete rip of the Corsair ones, but seem to be addressable even though only with presets. TBH? the Akasa fans I have in the rig already are probably about the same build quality.

Also, in defence of what I said.

Image

There. That is what it looks like most of the time. Note, apart from the red Bitspower water fittings everything else is severely monotone. That was deliberate.

With my second rig (the cheap fans one?) oh heck yeah, full on Christmas parade hahaha.

haha, when you fit 80mm legs :D

Image

The funny bit is why I had to do that. Not because I wanted it off the floor, but because when full it weighs about 60+ kilos. You simply can not lift it for more than a few seconds, so I fitted those legs so you can get a dolly in underneath it.

I know by hook or by crook I will be moving out this year, so right from the start needed to make it easier to move.

Reviews of the Area 51 suggest it weighed 35-40 kg when new, depending on config. I seriously doubt you have added 20-25 kg more to that.

I find it fascinating that you actually take the time out of your day to research and post about stuff like this, just to score a pointless cheap shot against a disabled guy who got the weight of his PC wrong.

And yet I'm 'deranged' for getting antsy about film censorship.

You would be surprised, then. Add two full copper radiators, water blocks, a whole crap ton of extra wiring and etc and a 1550w PSU. Then of course the feet, all of the extra sundries like bolts and then you add on 2l of coolant.

I'm not small in stature, and am quite strong, but I can not lift it well. It also doesn't help at all that it has no fucking handles *at all* and thus was impossible to lift without damaging it to start with.

Oh, and I managed to get a 3mm sheet of acrylic 1.5m wide and 500mm high in there too. As well as the pumps and god knows what else.

Hearth, if I got it wrong (And I strongly doubt that) then it's not by much. I've had to lift the bloody thing.
