They don't let me name names on this blog, but the person behind the hit I was investigating is dead now.

In fact, I may have killed more people than I actually avenged here.

The trigger man's going down. That would have felt good if I hadn't just taken a seven story body slam.

I don't know.

I guess I picked the least shitty of two incredibly shitty sides.

Maybe that doesn't matter. Maybe all that matters is that I now have the ability to kick down doors.

Either way, I think I need 10ccs of ketamine and a Columbo marathon

A fun and funny but not particularly difficult or long puzzle-platform-shooting-rewiring game.

Some part of me still enjoyed going through the game--mentally treating it as an amusing throwback--but I can't recommend it to anyone. The weird thing is how well it was reviewed, which is the reason it was on my list in the first place. Both Eurogamer and RPS had very nice things to say about it but reading their comments again now it's like they're playing a different version of the game from me. As if I'd somehow accidentally downloaded an old alpha version which had been completely overhauled before they touched it. It's all very weird.

Essentially each level has you fucking around with the options, title screen, credits etc that you'd find in the starting menu of a game to get into the save files. Every time you do that you're treated to an odd little vignette but those are just sideshows and will glitch out to dump you back at the menu screen facing another meta puzzle. I didn't find it that difficult--though I suspect I was lucky in stumbling across a couple of the answers--and it's very short; about an hour depending on your aptitude for these type of things. Overall though Pony Island does a much better job of this concept.

The various bizarre machines and fucked up objects all have an internal logic that becomes clear from playing around with them which is really the design goal with these things. Good stuff.

52. Oxenfree: a group of teenagers spend a night on a deserted island; weird shit ensues. It's part macabre mystery and part Telltale style adventure. You have more freedom than in a Telltale game because the island is an actual environment to be explored, but the actual story moves forward in a linear way. Your dialogue choices inform your treatment by the other characters, and your ending, but I get the sense that the gist of it doesn't change too much. The characters rarely shut up and some other people seemed to find that wearing but I thought the dialogue was generally very well written and the characters deep enough that it was a big positive to me. The ending felt pretty rushed, especially after a decent amount of time was spent setting up the characters and the plot, but that's probably the only real criticism I've got and I really enjoyed this for the few hours it lasted. If you like the idea of the Telltale narrative adventures but would prefer something that gives you a little bit more direct control then this comes highly recommended and I really enjoyed my time with it.

Is the dialog text or speech?

Speech; and very well voice acted speech at that. The main character's voiced by the person that did Snow White in 'The Wolf Among Us' to give an idea of the pedigree. When another character's talking your possible responses (or a summary of them anyway) appear above your head in those speech bubbles you see. You select one of them using one of the controller buttons; or none of them at which point they'll fade away and your character says nothing. Each possible reponse is mapped to a controller button so picking one is not only easy and intuitive but it doesn't stop you moving around or interacting with stuff which makes it a really nice way of modelling the conversation. As in real life you can chat away and still do other stuff. I should've mentioned all this in my original post because it's a really nice feature and is intrinsic in making the near constant dialogue feel like part of the game and not just something to be clicked through.

I hated it. The characters were annoying; the walking between interactive scenes was long, boring and requires you to keep clicking around bends and stuff like navigating a point & click adventure; the "interactive scenes" are barely interactive and just require you to tune a radio, so it's got much less interaction than a Tell Tale game; there's nothing to do except walk about and listen to the idle prattle; the story started off alright but soon got crap and one guy's voice (one of the young lads, I forget who know) was immensely grating and he wouldn't shut the fuck up. I've played some crap through to the end but this got deleted because it was painfully dull.

Yeah, you should've used a controller, it was just like walking around in any game with that. I didn't find the exploration at all boring, it was never more than a couple of screens before you'd get to something happening (especially slightly later in the game when the time loops start) and the dialogue kept things moving even then.

Satsuma wrote:

I wouldn't agree with that either. Obviously the TT games have QTEs and this doesn't but if you take those away a TT game is generally just walking around a scene clicking on stuff and choosing dialogue options, the same as Oxenfree. Unless I'm misremembering TT games, it's been a while since I played any (aside from the painfully fucking dull GoT one).

I believe I said, "It also desperately wants to be mentioned in the same breathe as Bastion but the VO guy is no Logan Cunningham and the actual dialogue is pretty lumpen stuff." so I wasn't quite as damning as you but yeah, the voice work certainly did nothing good for the game.

In my eyes this is the greatest FPS ever made. Even by today's standards it's a riotous affair. Every gun shot causes a billion particle effects as smoke booms, papers explode, walls explode, scenery explodes and of course faces explode. It has The Greatest and Most Satisfying shooting in any game ever. The lengthy campaign never got boring because fucking up people's day with deathly brass never once got boring.

24) Sonic CD (iOS)

I hate Sonic. Why does he stand steadfast in the middle of the screen? I can't see shit that's coming up even when moving at a crawl and I'm not memorising level layouts because they're an impossible mess of gaudy colours. I like the first two levels of Sonic 1 (Green & Lava) but every other Sonic can fuck right off.

Impossibly beloved for no apparent reason that I can discern.

You remember wrong. Mind you, most FPS' are just corridors with crates.

The AI has never been bettered though - even if it is just smoke and mirrors to make it seem as though they've got any intelligence. Those cunning meat bags love getting shot.

That's absolute rubbish.

I regularly dust my shelves so there's no dust gathering games in my house. More fake news!

I finished Doom 7th this year. It was excellent but no one is calling it the best FPS ever.

FEAR is twelve years old and you can still slidekick a man off this legs and turn him to a red cloud. It's amaze.

In terms of visceral joy, can KF2 go in there somewhere? A huge choice of weapons, most of which feel and sound satisfying, a variety of enemies requiring different strategies, enjoyable kills, and great co-op play. Sure, in terms of plot and storyboarding it's almost completely lacking, but I'm not sure that's disqualifying.

I don't think KF2 comes close to Doom for visceral joy.

54. Escape the Lighthouse: this appeared in the Related Apps section in the Play Store and, inspired by Russ, I gave it a shot. If this is the same game he played then (and I've no idea if it is) it's little wonder he's rattling through them as it had about three easy puzzles and took ten minutes to bang through, hampered only by the shittiness of the interface. The graphical style is really nice but I doubt I'll playing more from the series as it's wasn't a very good example of the genre. ETA: actually I'm pretty sure now it's not from the same series Russ has been playing as they're all of the format "Can You Escape from X" and this wasn't. Also there is an actual "Can You Escape from the Lighthouse" on the Play Store, along with loads similar from the same dev, so I imagine that's the set Russ has been going through. I'll probably give one of those a shot instead now

It was longer than the previous one but the puzzles were less logical in places, the graphics were much worse and it required pixel perfect tapping in some cases to interact with objects; so something you thought was just a bit of background turned out to be critical when you tapped it for the umpteenth time. Which is a cardinal sin in these type of games and means I won't be playing any more of them from that developer.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
the ending just fades way when I was expecting something more. I genuinely assumed that you'd see the death/transformation of whatsername as a way of revealing Ellie's immunity to her in an incredibly bitter-sweet way but nope, it just fades away.
My issues with the combat are well documented and in the final encounter I initally hit the same wall I sometimes hit in the main game (after pretty much breezing through the whole rest of the game). I stopped battering myself against it and watched a video of someone else playing part of it just to get some idea for techniques then went back and restarted the entire encounter. This time through I genuinely enjoyed it, despite still getting murdered a couple of times, and was almost sad when it finished. I genuinely didn't realise that you could thin most of the herd out with silent knife kills, or use the brick/bottle to stun them first, and after that it was pretty easy. I was worried about using the knife because I seem to remember it being very easily broken in the main game but in the DLC it seemed to last for as long as you want. Indeed I would argue that things become too easy in parts when you realise that (a) setting infected on humans is a total piece of piss and always results in the humans getting wiped out, plus (b) stealth killing infected with the knife is trivial. There's the odd moment when end up in an actual fight and at that point everything goes to shit but it's far from inevitable. And I realise that the gunplay being scrappy and awkward is sort of the point in terms of emulating this world they've built but it's still fucking awful and annoying to actually play.

It's well presented and easy to control with the only criticism being that it's a bit too easy to breeze through it's 60 levels.

60. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy: fucking brilliant fun. It's basically just more Uncharted 4 of course but that's absolutely fine with me. Indeed it's possible I enjoyed this more than Uncharted 4 itself, not least because the pairing of the two female leads is incredibly well done and they seem more like real people than Nate ever did. It apparently took me ten hours to complete on normal difficulty which is just about perfect I reckon and is probably another contributing factor to just how much flat-out fucking fun I had with this. It also felt like they'd tweaked the combat encounters a bit because you could literally play all of them using stealth if you wanted, which I don't remember being possible in the main game. You could stealth kill loads of people then get spotted and either firefight it out or just escape and hide until the game moved back into stealth mode. This balance of the available play styles made the combat encounters a joy to play, while those in UC4 could become a bit of an annoying slog after a while I felt. If you've played Uncharted 4 you know what you're getting into so you should play this. If you've never played it I'd almost recommend starting with this because it's awesome and more bite-size.

61. Hatoful Boyfriend: obviously it's a fucking weird concept but it's still surprisingly fun for the first while. It's a bit unbalanced in that getting the endings of the various characters is either incredibly obvious or totally opaque but the amusing weirdness of the entire conceit and some of the characters endings keeps things going. The Hurtful Boyfriend story though is something else entirely. There's only a couple of actual decision points and they serve no purpose in the story at all so it's like a couple of hours of just reading stuff on screen. This isn't helped by the fact that the story here is totally po-faced and is missing almost all of the quirky humour that made the original part of the game so compelling. It's nice to have the backstory of the world filled in of course but I was pretty bored long before it ended. My advice would be to spend a couple of hours enjoying the dating sim game then leave it there.

62. SIM: an Android game where the conceit is that you've found the phone of a girl who's gone missing and need to investigate her disappearance by digging through the phone contents and talking to people, with the phone's Siri-analog as a guide. The story itself is a half-baked conflation of The Ring and Blair Witch (or it is for as long as it lasts anyway, it seems to be more of a demo of a potential longer game because it ends abruptly just as it begins) but the implementation of the phone interface is brilliant. It rips off iOS of course but even while you're being led from email to messages to gallery all the aspects of the phone are open and fully functional. Even going as far having a music player that works as you'd expect and filling the gallery app with convincing pictures and videos of the phone's owner, even though none of this is required for the game itself. So not a brilliant game, but as a gamified emulation of a phone interface it's a resounding success.

It's trying to be for sure. You feel pretty removed from the action though because you're experiencing the entire thing through IMs and emails (albeit with disturbing images and videos thrown in) so it's not massively effective despite their best efforts. There's a lot of potential here but it would depend how the story played out if they extended it to a full game.

63. The Pasture: a Russian game that bills itself as an 'art curator simulator'. You control a woman in a shiny suit smoking a cigarette who's exploring a gallery. You walk towards a randomly placed 'meeting point' and when you get to that the game tells you that "You won! (probably)". At this point it sticks your character in a weird floating shiny chair and spins the camera round it while a vocal sample loops at a growing volume until it peaks and the game resets. All the while you're moving, a bar labelled "time until you die" is filling up which drops to zero if you stop moving for any length of time. If you keep going until it fills up you do indeed die and the game resets. There's an achievement for doing this five times. While exploring the gallery you can find icons that pop-up descriptions and info about (what I take to be) real modern art pieces which it then spawns into the gallery. The gallery has other permanent pieces in it's rooms which don't need to be spawned in; one of these is a wall with three massive disembodied photo-realistic boobs which all spin round like mammary catherine wheels. Your character will only walk forward into the camera, so you need to keep looking behind you to see where you're going. Constantly front and centre in your view are three disembodied hands holding either (a) cups with a tea-bags hanging out if them which are also filled with giant writhing worms or (b) mobile phones showing video of your smoking woman character as she walks ever towards you. Throughout all of this your character is continually mumbling stuff in Russian punctuated by other vocal samples like a man groaning orgasmically or a younger sounding woman chatting shit. It's possibly worth noting that some times you spawn not as the woman but as a weird looking man with wings who continually morphs back and forward between human and pig-form. The man wears a blue top hat with clouds on it and waves around what looks like a huge aubergine. When playing as the man the three disembodied arms sometimes waves guns at you rather than wormy teacups or phone cameras. Outside the gallery is a garden filled with graves and banner hangs over it announcing "International of death". This is a thing that is being sold on Steam.

64. UnWorded: a puzzle game for Android that has you arranging letters and punctuation to form pictures using poems to give you a clue what you're constructing. It follows a story within a story plotline which charts the decline and death of an author interspersed with books he's written which form the theme of each level. It looks absolutely lovely and some of the visual effects are really nice (e.g. an object dropping into 'water' which then explodes out splashes of tiny letters) but it's problems are two-fold:
  • You don't give a shit about the plot. Neither the framing story or the individual 'books' present particularly fleshed out characters so you almost instantly tune them out and just play the levels individually. There's an argument to be made that it would be a much less po-face and pretentious game altogether if it really was just a selection of levels with construction objects and clues but certainly, at best, the plot doesn't add anything.
  • Even with the clue word you've oftentimes got no idea what you're supposed to be building so you end up just randomly rearranging the given objects until some of them are in place to give you inspiration. The hint system here is well implemented which helps but even with that it cam degrade into too random an experience to be fun. Also there are a few levels where you're not actually constructing objects but manipulating things you've already built (e.g. fixing a wheelchair with a hammer and pair of pliers or navigating a mine cart through a mine) and on a few occasions I has so little an idea what I was supposed to do here that I eventually just skipped them entirely.
There are some nice idea here and a really good game hiding somewhere under all the nonsense but I can't say I was entirely unhappy to see it end.
