I have an iPod... I don't like iTunes... so what do I do?

I find and install a plugin called MGTEK Dopisp which enables Media Player 11 to sync with an iPod! It's ace, and just what I've been looking for.

I like the way Media Player handles my music and I'm used to the library features so I really wanted to stick to this rather than use iTunes. With (the fantastically named) MGTEK Dopisp, it's simple! You plug your iPod in, Media Player recognises it, you sync a load of tracks, click the "sync" button and Bob's your uncle!

The plugin is so small it could even be emailed... fancy that!!

I'd like to know why I can't just drag and drop files to it like a memory card :(

I used to not like iTunes, but turns out I much prefer it to Windows Media, Realplayer, Winamp etc. It's cool. Nice covers array too.

Hello all,

I hated iTunes for ages. Now I really like it. Anyway, Apple gets some unfair stick about this. Example: Jobs is on record as not being a fan of DRM on music. However, he's totally fucked if one or more of the 'majors' withdraws from the itunes store, so we're still stuck with it.

Regarding the memory stick drag and drop thing, I'd say similar industry concerns are in force. Also, of course, if you browse an ipod in disk mode you will see that when music is transferred to it, several songs are wodged together as single, enigmatically named .mp3 files. Allows the NAND memory buffer to be filled so that the hard drive has to spin up less frequently (reduces chances of a disastrous head crash and enlongens battery life). So that's a reason not to have true drag 'n' drop (er, at least for the HD-based pods, which are likely a dying breed).

The only thing that really ticks me off is how hard it is to export a playlist - by which I mean the actual music files. http://www.ericdaugherty.com/dev/itunesexport/ can do this for you, and the very flexible itunes smart playlists can be limited to size (as well as everything else) so that pretty much covers that. To an extent.

Sorry, am struggling with the forum URL embedding thingummy.

PS. I am New Blood. (((CHERISH ME))).

Hello, mysterious line!

I too quite like iTunes.

I also like iDump, as it allows me to pilfer songs from the iPods of my friends.

:)

Hello Six Underscore (or is it eight?). I also like iTunes and don't see why people get into such a tizzy about it.

Yeah, baffles me too. The main criticism people seem to have is that they don't like how it reorders folders. Personally I've been putting my MP3s into artist/album/song since I discovered MP3, so I think that's ace.

If iTunes would install without Quicktime, most of the irritation would be removed, for me.

Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Importing and tick both "Keep iTunes Music folder organised" and "copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to library".

Since iTunes is basically a player built on QuickTime (it's essentially QuickTime Player with media management features), I can't see that ever happening.

But given that most people use it as a purchasing/library app, it would be nice if you could install it as not a player.
