I bought the complete X-Files boxset back when DVDs were still a thing. TBH a lot of it isn't that great, but looking at Gillian Anderson is always nice.

There's an episode in the first season where she's in her underwear. Did I pause it? Yes. Yes I did.

Possibly the best episode out of the whole lot is one called 'Home' in Season 4.

I also have all the DVDs, so many great episodes, Home indeed, also squeeze/tooms and Humbug and Clyde Buckman ant the one where the guys shadow was like dark matter etc
I much preferred the monster of the week episodes over the story arc ones, but I can't think of any series where I really enjoy the story arc things
I didn't lust after Mulder but I did always hope they would properly get together

The Legend of Cocaine Island is good fun, a crime documentary about a builder who falls on hard times and learns of a stash of cocaine buried on a Puerto Rican island by a hippie who found it on the beach.

He obviously decides to retrieve it but ends up a bit out of his depth. It's an extraordinary story told by an interesting bunch of real life characters.

I thought The Highwaymen was fucking ace. I'd never really done any reading about Bonnie and Clyde, but man they got it brutal. Absolutely no pissing about that day.

I've also been glued to Our Planet, when I'm not wiring up speakers, or re-capping blown up amplifiers and generally unpacking and cleaning like mad.

It's funny how some months I don't even watch Netflix, yet somehow I never begrudge paying for it because I know it'll be there waiting for me when I get back. Plus I've bought my brother and sister in law a Amazon stick so they are now converts (and have ditched their Sky sub).

There's a new zombie thing on Netflix called BLACK SUMMER, it's like the anti-Walking Dead. i.e. Not shit and boring.

Set in the relatively early stages of the apocalypse, lots of humans still around, no zombie hordes or anything like that, some semblance of evacuations still underway, but it has all kind of gone to shit somewhat.

Doesn't care too much for chit-chat, each episode consists of several vignettes which may or may not run concurrently and/or in the same storyline. There are proper recurring characters though.

I did the first four episodes this evening which is well over two hours of telly, and I've only not gone onto a fifth because it's getting a bit late and I don't want zombies in my head coming up to bedtime.

ZOMBIE PRODUCTION ESSENTIAL INFO:

ZOMBIE TYPE - FAST
PROPER SWEARING - YES
CRASTER SCALE - ZERO SO FAR
GORE LEVEL - MODERATE

Is a clever, self-contained story and a nice riff on 'humans are the real enemy', fantastically tight, taut episode. I really liked this one.

It's almost like a zombie farce, into the realms of a Naked Gun style episode but played with a totally straight face but totally knows what it's doing. The guy does EVERYTHING wrong but just keeps getting away with it, and then right at the end is saved by a seriously zombie-smart dude and, well, you'll see.......


The whole thing feels nice and fresh, I always marvelled at how TWD managed to fuck up FUCKING ZOMBIES which are the coolest thing ever. Black Summer shows there's life in the old, dead, rotting, dog yet.

I finished BLACK SUMMER last night, in the final analysis I think I'll go with 7.5/10, or to be more accurate, 750/1000.

A seven feels a bit stingy, an eight feels a bit generous.

It's a somewhat different take on an overused genre, doesn't overstay its welcome, and comes in at a compact eight episodes with running times of between 45 and 22 minutes.

Deffo worth a watch if you like your zombie stuff.

One thing I will say is that it really moves along at a fair rate of knots, the final episodes are shorter than the early episodes and it was so refreshing to see them decide:

'We can get this episode done in 25 minutes'

'OK let's do that then'

'Cool'

THE WALKING DEAD VERSION:

'We can get this episode done in 25 minutes'

'No deal, we've got a mandated broadcast slot to fill'

'OK, just get Carol to talk about baking cakes for 10 minutes, and later on have one of the annoying kids talk shit about something that has no relevance to anything that's happened before, and will never be mentioned again'

That's a shame, Episodes 3 and 4 were where it really started to show its unique spin on things.

My final rating was 7.5/10 so it's not amazing, but I liked that it managed to find its own identity and do something a bit different with the genre.

I still think Episode 4 was particularly clever.

The whole thing is basically a zombie movie in-joke in that the guy makes every mistake possible but just keeps getting away with it and somehow doesn't die. The episode is an extended one-on-one chase scene. And then, right at the end when his luck finally runs out, he is suddenly saved by a far more capable and zombie-smart human survivor, who sustains a bite in the struggle, at which point our protagonist suddenly gets his shit together and quickly, ruthlessly kills the human, knowing that he will shortly turn.

For some reason I really liked that one, it played it straight, but with a knowing wink.

Plus ça change... This also happens with “normal” TV shows, but after seven seasons. This is because the maximum length of any actor’s contract is seven years under California law, so if a show is still viable after seven years (which basically is only true of really popular shows) the actors are free to renegotiate massive rises. This happened with Friends, and I think it took the core six cast members pay up by about 10x or so.

Despite the fact I said I wouldn’t start any more Netflix Originals in protest for their shit policy of cancelling them after three seasons, I caved and we started Tuca and Bertie tonight. It’s the same art style and production company as BoJack Horseman, has a great cast and the first two episodes are really enjoyable.
