Sabrina talks about fast-moving zombies as being a recent phenomenon.

They talk about Cronenbourg's The Fly, which is an 80s film and body dysmorphia, which is something trans people experience, not really known about in the 60s.

That's possibly a continuity error rather than being a deliberate attempt to obfuscate. ;)

They have iPhones and laptops, and in the first episode there was a screen that said “October 28th of this year”. It’s deliberately ambiguous.

Although it was also the wrong day of the week to be 2018, for some reason.

Hence "deliberately ambiguous".

Mr Robot’s continuous take episode (last year I think, or was it early this year?) was extremely well done and did a great job of varying the shots.

I could have sworn that The Haunting’s episode had a clear cut midway through the episode where they flashed back. I ain’t watching it again to find out though.

Turns out this was made out 31 shots. It looks great, and they did a great job of hiding the cuts, but it's clearly not on the same level of achievement as tHoHH's five-shots-for-53-minutes, which is monstrously ambituous.

No, I think you're right, I think there's at least one clear cut, presumably where they couldn't physically make the shot work even appearing to be continuous so just went with the cut. I don't mind that. I also don't mind how tHoHH used a lot of slow pans and swoops and rotations that made it feel very stagey, very much like a play but where the camera is an extra participant. I guess some people might have found that off-putting, but it really worked for me.

I won’t agree with “clearly not on the same level of achievement”. Both are technical marvels. Personally I preferred Mr Robot for the spectacle that was on display and could complain than The Haunting had a very long sections where the camera just spun around in the middle of a big room while the actors were arguing, but that’d be churlish. Both captured the continuous shot perfectly.

Just reminding myself about the Mr Robot episode. I think it had this baffling shot in a cramped elevator where the camera just span around Elliott for ages and Mr Robot pops up to chat with him. I couldn’t figure out how they got the camera spinning around and the actors in there and had no reflections from the camera operator against the reflective surfaces of the elevator walls. It must have been some CGI stuff but it was such a simple shot executed brilliantly.

Anyhoo.

Heh, I watched that a few week ago and was literally just about to post it as an example. It's a good film as well.

ETA: apparently it was filmed three times and big chunks of the dialogue were improvised, the released version was the final attempt.

Also, fucking hell, how gutted would you be if you ruined it all by accident:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
In the scene right after the bank robbery Laia Costa actually forgot where to drive and takes the wrong turn. Everyone's outburst of panic in the car is completely genuine as they were risking filming crew members and thus ruining the whole take. Even the director Sebastian Schipper, who was lying in the trunk of the car, started screaming directions in sheer panic. His screaming was later removed during audio editing. The car actually ended up driving past crew members but none of them can be seen thanks to the cameraman who reacted quickly by filming from a much lower angle so as not to have any windows in the frame.

Post subject:  Re: Netflix

Sorry, last post here, I'm just remembering all this stuff after Googling it at the time:

Quote:
The film was shot in one single long take by Sturla Brandth Grøvlen from about 4:30 AM to 7:00 AM on 27 April 2014 in the Kreuzberg and Mitte neighborhoods. The script consisted of twelve pages, with most of the dialogue being improvised.

To get financers on board, director Sebastian Schipper promised to deliver a version using jump cuts as a "plan B" if he couldn't achieve the final product in a true single take. The jump-cut version was filmed first, over ten days, as a series of ten-minute takes, so that Schipper would have a completed film in the bag even if the one-take version failed. Schipper has characterized the jump cut version as "not good". The budget permitted only three attempts at the one-take version. According to Schipper, the first attempt was dull because the actors were too cautious, being afraid to make mistakes; the second attempt was the opposite, as the actors went "crazy". Schipper says he became "angry" and "terrified" after seeing the second take and realizing he had only one chance left; in a subsequent meeting, he gave the cast a "hairdryer speech ... [it] was not a meeting that ended in hugs and 'good talk.' It was crazy. But the tension was built on knowing we wanted the same thing". Schipper believes the final attempt was successful because there was an element of "aggression" missing from the other versions.
