Captain Marvel. I really enjoyed this. Some laugh out loud moment.

I liked the prototype of the Quinjet and how Fury lost his eye.

I finally got round to watching Ant Man (the first one) at the weekend and.... it was really good, probably one of my favourites of late as it wasn't overblown to THE MAX.

The big fight at the end was super fun.

I'm looking forward to Ant Man and The Wasp, then Captain Marvel.

End Game predictions/guesses:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
My guess:

Tony Stark ends up dead, but not before making an AI backup of himself to live on in the Iron Man suit. He is Iron Man. Marvel build a recording studio in Downy Jr's house and he sticks around as a character that is mainly just in the background, but he's there for big fights and such. His death involves putting an infinity stone in his chest hole to super power up his suit.

Cap somehow ends up with the super serum reversed/undone, and he is scrawny Steve Rogers by the end of the movie, after saving the day. He knowingly makes this sacrifice because it's the only thing he can do to bring everyone back from the snap. Last scene shows him going to the gym. Bucky takes over as Captain America going forward, Chris Evans takes several years off before making a triumphant return years down the line, but mostly in a Nick Fury type role.

So I watched Captain Marvel in preparation of The Avengers: End Game.

It wasn’t great but it wasn’t bad either. It was humorous in parts but didn’t make me laugh, mind. You knew Jude Law was a bad guy right from the off. Namely because he’s Jude Law.

I thought Bree Larson was great. She had a really good attitude and she started off pretty humorous but her lines dried up as she became more stoic.

The action was a bit boring and predictable too apart from the opening action sequence. She eventually settles into the usual booting people around that are par for the course with these films. The flying around the sky shooting space ships and rockets was as predictable and yawnsome as most of these movies are: difficult to track and CGI explosions up the hoo har as thousands of CGI spaceships blow up with zero consequence. It’s all a bit nonsense. At one point she smashes a giant mothership to bits as she flies through it like butter, then she stops and tells the rest of the baddies to bugger off rather than instantly destroying them.

The special effects/make-up on Sam L Jackson was amazing though. Mind you, I’ve no idea if the bit where the cat scratched his eye is comic-canon but it was a bit shit. If they were going for a comedy “oh, this is where he loses his eye” he really should have had more eye injuries throughout the film. I didn’t quite understand what the deal with the cat was other than comic relief.

All in all it was a nothing origin story that I wouldn’t have bothered to pay real world money for except I didn’t want to miss anything that was salient to the Avengers movie. Turns out I missed fack all for over a tenner.

We watched Captain Marvel last week, it felt slow to start, but when she got together with Fury it got going. This made us want to watch everything we needed to to get us up to speed with Endgame. Plex wouldn't let us watch Captain America though. :(

Agreed about the Fury cat eye scratch, it was a shit bit of backstory and isn't comic canon because the cat was introduced in the pretty recent Captain Marvel comics.

I thought the MCU was it's own universe, based on the comics but not full canon. As the comics have too many parallel universes and re-boots

Yes, that's all true. I believe Sat was suggesting though that they might have taken this explanation for Fury's fucked up eye from the comics, because there are parallels between the two, even though they're far from identical as you say.

Huh, I didn't realise that, though it makes total sense (in context of the general batshittery of comics continuity I mean).

Well, the batshittery is made metacanon by a multiverse of different Earths. Whenever you see a retcon, an alternate universe did it.

I didn't read this thread, but have just been to see End Game and now I am here.

I think it's another case of "yeah they did not mess that up, even though it was extremely ambitious".

Some minor complaints, several lingering questions, but overall it was great.

Kinda great to have a movie where I didn't completely understand absolutely everything as it was going. I followed most of it, and got the significance of most of what was going on, but there were times and conclusions that I will want to think over.

Needs to be seen if you are already on board. Curious about what will come next.

I'm very surprised there weren't more deaths, though. When Cap picked up Mjolnir I thought that was the beginning of the end for him.

Author:  Grim... [ Thu Apr 25, 2019 23:18 ]
Post subject:  Re: Marvel Cinematic Universe spoiler thread: discuss all films

So, let's write something rather than just random words.

There was stuff I didn't like - the time travelling thing felt like a bit of a cop-out, and they didn't even "break" it at the end, meaning if there's ever any more trouble they can just go back in time to fix it. And how come people can casually pick up Infinity Stones now? Non-gauntlet Thanos was too strong. Why was the Ancient One in New York? And although I loved every one, I think there were a lot of coincidences going on with people seeing their parents / lovers / etc when they were back in the past.

But that was pretty much it for "stuff I didn't like". There was just so much else to love - Hulk from the modern comics was the first thing I was properly pleased to see, and the bit where the kids took a photo with him was great (although why didn't they recognise Cap?).

I can't go through the bits I like one by one, it'll take forever.

So the bits I really liked - (Mo)Hawkeye being fucking murdering nutcase Ronin was a really interesting thing. I loved the Back to the Future 2-esq heist plot, especially Cap v Cap - I thought the use of the sceptre to wipe his memory was really clever. And Loki came back! And got away! Good old Loki. The Nebula switcheroo was well done, and Thanos' sword was metal as fuck :metul: Obviously I was very sad about Black Widow (I was "Oh no"ing at Mrs Grim..., and then when Hawkeye was fighting her Mrs Grim... told me it would be okay, to which I replied "There's no way in hell he can beat her" and, rubbish, I was right). I was surprised (but happy, obv) to see Stan, but a bit wary of the fact that they could just CGI him into all the films from now on. And I really liked the bit with the signatures in the credits for the OG Avengers. And the bit with all the female heroes protecting the gauntlet (except for Rescue and Widow, obv). Oh, and I was pleased Jon Favreau came back for one more.

I saw it (as I'm sure most of you will) in a packed cinema, which I'm glad about. Obviously we're British and terribly reserved, but when Cap picked up Mjolnir the whole place went fucking nuts, as they did when Sam came through on the radio, and each person coming through the portals got their own cheer (especially Spidey, obv). There were shouts of "come on!" when Scarlet Witch was laying the smack down on Thanos, and proper cries of dismay when your boy Tony died (which was really well done and really sad).

Frankly, as you may have gathered, I loved it. It had tiny flaws that barely register, and it was epic in the way that only something with a 21-movie backstory can be.

"I... am... Iron Man."

I'm 99% convinced it's the best film I've ever seen.

Author:  Trooper [ Thu Apr 25, 2019 23:46 ]
Post subject:  Re: Marvel Cinematic Universe spoiler thread: discuss all films

Pretty much Grim... just said. The whole cinema fucking erupted at worthy cap!

Loved it, it was a bit too long, and made absolutely no sense as a standalone film, but as the end of a series it was amazing.
The thing that surprised me the most, was just how surprising it was. From the first cut to 5 years later, through new hulk and the in an outs of previous films, to worthy cap. All unexpected and all a joy.
And it was proper funny, not just a few quips here and there, actual laugh out loud funny at times.

It's not the best film i've ever seen, and i'm not sure how much it will stand up to repeat viewings, but it is glorious.
