To be honest, I can’t see how they could possibly make a coherent film out of that many characters without everything in it being absurdly shallow or silly, or there being huge gaps in the plot and continuity weirdness. It is surely going to be underwhelming.

That said, I’m super excited for it.

I'm sure it'll be fun and entertaining but yeah, the majority of the characters are going to get glorified bit parts at best (unless it's some five hour long saga, which it'll never be). The 'best' we can hope for is that they just run with this inevitability and pick a couple of characters to focus on just to give some consistency and coherency to the whole thing.

It's in two parts for a reason.

Strictly speaking it isn’t any more.

But it is.

Black Panther was lots of fun. Did a great job with introducing multiple new and interesting characters, and had the best villain in ages (and also let Andy Serkis be a fantastic scenery-chewing second villain).

Mr Serkis clearly had a lot of fun, and was a joy to watch.

I really enjoyed BP. Nice to see a well thought out super hero film, that was not saving the galaxy

Like every other recent superhero film beside Guardians of the Galaxy 2?

Edit: Nope, turns out that was just life on some planets.

I thought the implication in GotG 2 was that

which is pretty well "saving the galaxy" IMO.

Ok, slight exaggeration.

I liked BP as it was smaller, the threat was more intimate.

RE: Black Panther, I did sort of wonder why Killlmonger spent all that time working with Klaue only to up and murder him at the last minute. He could've killed him at pretty much any time and presented him to Wakanda as proof of his worthiness so why work with him for so long then turn round and kill him at that precise moment?

I think the idea was that he needed T'Challa to fail to apprehend him to sow the seed of discontent amongst the Wakandans.

It was a bit hamfisted though.

They all already considered it a massive failure of his father to not capture him; he'd have been better taking out Klaue much earlier and off challenging the old king over it.

ETA: And ultimately it was his position as royal family member that meant the challenge was allowed to go ahead so Klaue's death was arguably pointless.

Nah, the only way he could get the 'army' onside, with yer man and his rhinos, was to show himself to be better than T'Challa. So he needed T'Challa to fail and then to succeed himself. That got him as far as the throne room with support, rather than potentially it all blowing up before then.

He could feasibly have done it before T'Challa was King, but maybe the opportunity didn't present itself, or he was preparing.

He was a good antagonist though, given that a lot of what he said was spot on, and in the end the good guys agreed with him about their own failures.

My one, 'huh' moment was when the reinforcements turned up in the final battle... like, they're fighting in a massive open space (yes, rocks and mountains, but you've got sightlines for miles in each direction), where the fuck were they hiding?

Also, the line about vegetarians was laugh out loud funny. As was the one calling Martin Freeman a coloniser.

I'll give it an 8/10, there were parts in the middle that I was literally nodding off, the whole Thanos/Gamora piece was turgid, however the ending more than made up for that.

I do hope they don't do any timewimey stuff to fix the mess, but I suspect that will happen as it'll fuck up a fair few franchises otherwise!

My guess is that most people will come back. Avengers 4 is going to focus mainly on the original group of Avengers, not all of them will make it, but all the dust people will be brought back, and possibly even Gamora etc (they might do The Search For Gamora for GOTG3).

Ant man doesn't matter, Thor Ragnarok there are a couple of things you should really know going in, but it won't take you long to pick up if you don't. Dr strange you really should see first if possible.

Thor Ragnarok is brill and you should watch it because it’s brill. I’m sick of superhero films but Thor is so much fun I couldn’t help but love it. Interesting cinematography too, unlike, say Ant Man.

It did amuse me that Ant-Man and Hawkeye were referenced as taking time out with their families and couldn't help out. It's not like the destruction of the universe is important or anything, it's much better to be spending your time watching Timmy in the school play...

Post subject:  Re: Marvel Cinematic Universe spoiler thread: discuss all films

Saw new Avengers last night and really enjoyed it. Some characters do get very little screen time but most of them get a check-in with a little bit of meat which goes a long way to papering over the problem of the massive cast. And this frees up runtime for selected groups to drive the plot in a focussed way, which is really the only reasonable method to handle this I reckon. Thanos himself is incredibly well done (at the expense of his sidekicks who are almost completely pointless ciphers; Ebony Maw slightly notwithstanding) and while I agree that the sections with him and Gamora were a bit over-indulgent they were obviously included to, successfully, round out his character and I think some of all that will be important in the next film. While I'm sure the deaths at the end will be reversed* in the next film it's still incredibly affecting to see them go all in on that shit rather than the usual plucky good guys snatching victory at the very end. It's also worth noting that they really didn't hold back here, the torture of Nova was fucking brutal to watch/listen to and while the deaths at the end didn't look physically painful you've still got lingering shots of characters having to watch friends and colleagues turn to dust in front of their eyes. In particular Spider-man's protests as he realised what was happening to him was hardcore stuff.

*No doubt using the time stone in whatever plan Dr Strange seemed to have in mind, especially given that he never explained exactly what the millions-to-one victory scenarios was. Also, I do wonder if there'll be some convenient in-universe reason why not everyone can be brought back which will allow them to age out characters who's actors are done with the franchise.
