Sounds like a lot of work. I'll just get the GameCube out to play some F-Zero then.

Yep, GameCube and Wii U would be the best combination now. Ditch the Wii.

For the games? It's a crazy idea I know but...

Seriously though, the PS4 has much better games than the Xbone and isn't that supposed to be what it's all about? Fuck backwards compatibility; if you want to play X360 games then just keep your 360.

I'd keep the Wii providing it will play Gamecube games as the Wii Component cable is much cheaper and much easier to come by than the Gamecube version. The games will look better on a Wii with this cable and they'll play exactly the same.

That's what I do anyway.

There aren't too many on either format I know for sure that I'd want to get. Previously it was Rocket League, but I just play that on PC now. In time I'll probably end up with them both anyway, it's just a case of which order.

I would keep the 360, but it's on the way out. I was going to replace it with a slim, but as the Xbox Ones slowly come down in price, I'll just get one of those instead.

Nintendo's online multiplayer is not great. I wouldn't be particularly confident it would be a compelling game on the Switch. Although I love the idea.

Nintendon't works great for playing Gamecube games on a Wii U. It's not tricky to set up, and yeah you can just play isos from an SD card.

I watched the Nintendo Direct last night and there's loads of stuff on there if you like your RPGs. Xeonblade 2 looks ace and there's also a game called Octopath Traveller. It looks absolutely lovely! Just watch the first minute of the video below and try to disagree with me. There was a few things announced for the 3DS including Minecraft which is available now. Is Minecraft more prolific than Doom now?

The highlight of the Direct announcement was easily Mario Odyssey. I can't begin to describe how amazing this looks! There's so much you can do in it and it looks absolutely huge. It's so good that it looks like it'll be challenging Zelda as the best game ever.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is giving me conniptions. That'll be the game that makes me run out and get a Switch. Bloody thing has a 1st December release date an' all. Bastards. AND there's talk of potential stock shortages of Switches too this winter too.

And it's arrived. :) One downside of buying second-hand is that the seller has binned the box's inner packaging and instructions (assuming there were some anyway - all the contents were just bubblewrapped in the box), but not to worry.. I'm up and running on it and so far, it's a lovely bit of kit. It feels a little small in my fat hands (fnar), but everything seems very impressive. Unfortunately I don't have time to actually play a bit of Zelda till later.

Had one playthrough of Binding of Isaac earlier. It's not really much different to the Steam version in all honesty, but it's an alternative to when I want a break from Zelda, and it'll no doubt spark off my addiction to the game again.

I'm tempted to buy a cheap third party pad though, as I'm not sure how the Joy-Con would hold up to hundreds of hours of use, particularly as Isaac is heavy on the thumbsticks.

If you do let me know what you think , i've been looking at the wired ones which are around 20-25 or so on Amazon / Argos for an alternative to the built in ones.

It *does* work with the 8-bitdo pads and I have two of them but those are better for SNES style stuff rather than Zelda

I enjoyed the brief stint I've had with it, but I need to get some more time to play it properly. I'm not sure I've figured out how the game shows you the maximum distance a shot will travel or you'er just supposed to judge by eye.

I can't work out which game I've played in the past it reminds me of. I'm wondering if it might be GBA Mario Golf, but my memory on that is very hazy.

I looked at Golf Story on the eShop the other day (after I'd made my way through the fucking ridiculous account creation procedure on the Switch)

I was amused to note that none of the screenshots featured on the eShop show golf being played.

I played Golf Story a little more last night and just played a quick round, rather than delving into the story mode, so just so I could get a feel for the actual golfing bit of the game and it's starting to click with me now.

I wouldn't worry about the golfing aspect clicking with you, from what I can tell... Golf is only a small part of the game!

It is brilliant though.

In other news... Bomberman R is under £25 on the Game Collection today. I've ordered it.

Is that Hit Point thing explained? I think it's toggled with X but I wasn't sure what it did.

The precision shot is toggled with Y. When you select your club, before pressing A, press Y and you'll be able to line up the shot to land where you want. This is useful as it also puts a diamond on your shot gauge so you know how hard you'll be hitting it.

Ah, didn't know that..

had lots of fun with golf story yesterday.. never thought i would be an archealogist in a golf game..

meanhile, in the (predictable) comments on the article (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017- ... ndo-switch ) on why switch didn't let you invite friends in fifa 18, i thought this theory was kind of interesting..

Sunjammer wrote:
Theorycrafting time!

Nintendo does what Nintendoes, so I wouldn't be surprised for a second if this is just plainly a fuckup from their end, but here's how I feel about this current situation:

The Switch is not running on the best hardware in the world, so every cycle counts. This is why the thing doesn't run on Android or some other OS, Nintendo needed its OS to be as skinny as humanly possible to make sure games can assume complete control of the hardware. On past Nintendo systems with a "home button", the button essentially made a processor transaction between the game and the OS, and I presume this is the case with the Switch as well. Note how even the shop channel starts chugging with background downloads, and how background downloads are ALWAYS paused during gameplay. People make great looking things on the Switch but don't forget the SOC it's actually running on. Again, every cycle counts.

Compare this to competing systems where they dedicate significant resources to the OS even during gameplay. This enables a ton of nonsense fluff, but it also enables stuff like multiplayer lobby interactions during gameplay. On the Switch, when you hit that home button, you are suspending the game full stop. This is why multiplayer games don't allow you to "home out" during matches because it'd effectively disconnect you.

Temp conclusion: There is extremely little concurrency between the OS and games, if any, and this is by design to ensure Switch games have as much processor as absolutely possible.

For an intensely performance-conscious machine like the Switch, giving developers 99% of the processor time with the tradeoff that they'll have to include multiplayer lobby stuff themselves is sensible, not backwards. If I'm playing Mario Odyssey with zero online functionality, why should I be giving up performance for online shit I will not use?

What Nintendo should do if they haven't already is give developers libraries for integrating this stuff into the games themselves. This would give the impression of a system-wide solution even though there isn't one, and it'll let developers opt in to the scenarios where they want it rather than give up cycles for it by default. Personally I prefer when games themselves do this with integrated design that fits the game, rather than having to bounce via system UI for it.
