665,760 PS4 units were sold in the first 26 weeks on sale in Japan - nothing to be sniffed at. However, Switch has now shifted 1,527,962 units in the same time frame; it took the PS4 Sony 69 weeks to reach 1,523,471 units. All of these figures are taken from the highly respected Japanese retail tracker MediaCreate.

Of course, Japan is not the world, and the while the Switch continues to sell briskly elsewhere, the PS4 remains dominant. Still, given that Nintendo's console isn't even a year old yet, such data bodes well for the future of the platform

My next console purchase was going to be a Wii U when I found one at the right price on eBay, but I've been wavering a little on that and might just skip it and go for the Switch. Both systems only have a few games I want though, which doesn't help with the decision.

Quick questions:

Are all WiiU's backwards compatible with Wii discs?

Am I right in saying that certain WiiU's can play GameCube games?

Am I right in saying some Wiis can play GameCube games?

I was wondering about shoving a GameCube disc in both my wii and WiiU but I didn't want the tiny disc to get stuck.

Seriously though, the PS4 has much better games than the Xbone and isn't that supposed to be what it's all about? Fuck backwards compatibility; if you want to play X360 games then just keep your 360.

I'm rather looking forward to my Switch arriving. Predictably, I've just ordered Binding of Isaac for it.

I'm tempted to buy a cheap third party pad though, as I'm not sure how the Joy-Con would hold up to hundreds of hours of use, particularly as Isaac is heavy on the thumbsticks.

I bought Wonderboy over the weekend and started playing it today.

yeah, some of those (N)indies look tasty, don't they... i bought tumbleweed now.. BTW, something my kids like: far more is in dutch than was one the WiiU (which was already an improvement on the Wii by far... (and the 3ds is catching up, even translating some older titles like tomodashi after a while)

My next console purchase was going to be a Wii U when I found one at the right price on eBay, but I've been wavering a little on that and might just skip it and go for the Switch. Both systems only have a few games I want though, which doesn't help with the decision.

Bought the rabids game... wa splaying it with my daughter greatfun.. the first minioboss level sudden ramps of the difficulty (not that hard, but more that you suddenl;y have to shift from a leisurely pace to thinking.. now unlocked the coop mode.. my daughte rreally loves coop so we'll see devilman.. just buy a switch.. it's great..

My next console will be the Switch, the XBox/PS lines just seem totally redundant to me these days, no interest at all. I wouldn't buy a Wii-U at this stage though, unless you can get one really cheap, there are a handful of truly fantastic games for it but Mario Kart 8 and Zelda are on the Switch as well.

As it stands, here are my reasons for three possible consoles - Wii U - Backwards compatibility so I can ditch the Wii. Smash Bros. Xenosaga Switch - Zelda (although could get that for Wii U) and it generally seems like an innovative console compared to the PS4/Xbox One. Speaking of which... Xbox One - Rare Replay and Xbox 360 backwards compatibility So at the moment, I don't have a huge number of reasons for any of them, which is why I'm holding out for a cheapish one of any/all of the above on eBay. Oddly, I can't think of a reason to buy a PS4. It was going to be VR, but that's too much of an expense right now.

I'd keep the Wii providing it will play Gamecube games as the Wii Component cable is much cheaper and much easier to come by than the Gamecube version. The games will look better on a Wii with this cable and they'll play exactly the same. That's what I do anyway.

There aren't too many on either format I know for sure that I'd want to get. Previously it was Rocket League, but I just play that on PC now. In time I'll probably end up with them both anyway, it's just a case of which order. I would keep the 360, but it's on the way out. I was going to replace it with a slim, but as the Xbox Ones slowly come down in price, I'll just get one of those instead.

Nintendon't works great for playing Gamecube games on a Wii U. It's not tricky to set up, and yeah you can just play isos from an SD card.

I watched the Nintendo Direct last night and there's loads of stuff on there if you like your RPGs. Xeonblade 2 looks ace and there's also a game called Octopath Traveller. It looks absolutely lovely! Just watch the first minute of the video below and try to disagree with me. There was a few things announced for the 3DS including Minecraft which is available now. Is Minecraft more prolific than Doom now? The highlight of the Direct announcement was easily Mario Odyssey. I can't begin to describe how amazing this looks! There's so much you can do in it and it looks absolutely huge. It's so good that it looks like it'll be challenging Zelda as the best game ever.

One downside of buying second-hand is that the seller has binned the box's inner packaging and instructions (assuming there were some anyway - all the contents were just bubblewrapped in the box), but not to worry.. I'm up and running on it and so far, it's a lovely bit of kit. It feels a little small in my fat hands (fnar), but everything seems very impressive. Unfortunately I don't have time to actually play a bit of Zelda till later.
