Hard to reconcile this bit with the fact you've only played four, the most recent of which is from 2009... How does this work exactly?

The Zelda games I've played for more than ten minutes -
Link's Awakening
Ocarina of Time
Wind Waker
Breath of the Wild

Not come close to finishing any of them. Not sure why they don't really grab me.. might be because I grew up playing Sega systems instead, so I'm far more attached to the Shining Force games, Landstalker etc. In fact, I've been replaying Shining in the Darkness lately.

I'll probably revisit Breath of the Wild some day though. Although I still haven't started Mario Odyssey yet.

You mentioned this at the cottage and I've only just got over it.

Thanks for reminding me. Good job I was sitting down!

I approve of this idea, if only because it'll make my pile of consoles seem a little more normal.

I went in my mom and dads loft the other day and found these. I'd forgot I'd got most of them.

I'm pretty sure that I own all of the Zelda games in one form or another apart from the CDi games.

I'll rectify that one day but not now. They're still mega expensive I think.

I genuinely don't understand how you've played/completed several but not done these two, which IMO are two out of three of the best Zelda games ever made. (The third being BotW.)

I qualify this by stating that I have played every(?) Zelda game since the SNES, so I'm aware that there are a few earlier ones that could be epic for their age that I missed out on. Also many people rave about Wind Waker but I always thought it was meh.

I think I've played them all for more than a few hours... Apart from number 2. Off the top of my head I've completed BOTW, Ocarina of time, Majoras mask, Link between worlds and one of the Gameboy ones.

BOTW is my favourite and I've put nearly 100 hours into it. I'm quite surprised I've played a game for that long myself so Lord knows what you lot must think.

How is this different from any Zelda game ever? The next bit of game in Zelda is always the other side of the map. The key difference with BotW is that you don't have to do it in the order that is dictated, and once you're off the plateau you really don't have to do anything at all - you could go and kill Ganon straight up if you so desired.

Or maybe I'm misunderstanding and that's the actual problem for you? Idk.

I haven't actually played a Zelda game since A Link To The Past on the SNES (which I well and truly maxed out), I've never been massively invested in the series TBH and I've missed some Nintendo consoles over the years as well. (I didn't have a 64, Gamecube or Wii, although I did buy several of the handhelds Nintendo produced during those years.)

Anyway, I'm not criticising the new Zelda game for what it is - (although I stick by my opinion that the controls are awful) - or saying I think it should change (as both Mr Fop and Bamba correctly identified in their rather more thoughtful and polite replies than certain people could muster), all I was trying to articulate is how, for various reasons, these more 'meandering' open world games don't particularly appeal to me anymore.

I want to be doing 'the thing', not travelling across a big map to get to 'the thing'. I entirely appreciate that for many people that travelling, 'the journey' as Mr Fop titled it, is very much part of 'the thing', but for me it just isn't anymore.

But as I also explained, I'm not entirely done with open world style games, I was fine with God Of War, which is a more tightly constrained and controlled experience than Zelda. Maybe my tolerance level will change again over time and I'll lose patience with that too, I mean, it wasn't supposed to be a confrontational post or anything, I was just saying how I felt about a game and why, that's all.

EDIT - And there's also the point about how a lot of the trappings of these open world games are very familiar to RPG players, as I said, we were kind of doing a lot of this stuff in WoW over ten years ago, and it was far more involved too as you could make stuff for other people and pool your talents and resources for the good of a wider group, or your guild, and so on. I mean, I get that you're supposed to have a real connection to your horse in RDR2 but I was taming and caring for pets, feeding them, stabling them, levelling them up and going on grand adventures with them and improving their abilities over time on my Hunter character in WoW in 2008.

Easy, I never had a N64! I never had a SNES either. Or a NES. But I had a GameCube! And a Wii. And a WiiU. My folks weren’t well off and I really only had a second hand PlayStation 1. My console ownership dramatically increased when I got a job though.

But now I know TV’s finished them I might have to step up my gaming!

Ha! You can get Major as mask and Ocarina of time on the Gamecube as part of a compilation disc.

I imagine it's pricey now though so if you want them, get the 3DS versions. They're great.

Ah, come on, I was only joshing you. I don’t want to fall out. You know I love ya. Big hugs and kisses xxx

Anyway, I’ve a page full of legitimate problems with BotW but complaining about it not being immediate fun like nuDoom/Donkey Kong et all is really missing the point of what it’s all about.

In any event, BotW does have a linear path laid out before you if pay attention. When you get off the mountain (the tutorial) you head east and eventually get to a village and someone tells you to kill 4 big beasts in the 4 corners of the map. When you arrive in each of the 4 areas there’s then a fairly linear route: the volcano has a path you just follow; the water world has a path you have to follow; the desert world has you go to the main village and then through an underground lair and the wind area is, well, I can’t remember but it was a fairly straight shot to the village to trigger the boss fight. That’s it. Then back to the main quest village for a chat and then into a spooky wood. The wood has to be traversed in a linear way and when you get to the middle it’s basically 4 challenges in another linear fashion and you’re done. And then rush to the middle of the map for the main boss fight.

You only get as distracted as you want to be. I enjoyed knocking about certain areas and doing the odd temple but I got very bored after about 50 temples and just stopped. The game didn’t punish me or anything, I just got back to the main quest.

You don’t have to do anymore than you want to. Put on the horse blinkers and play the game like it’s not a massive open world and you can. If you want to go exploring, you can, but if you don’t then stick to the script and get on with the main quest. Maybe the illusion of choice is what’s stopping you enjoying the game. I don’t know, you’ve paid for it twice now and you should probably see if you can clock it, but if you’ve seen enough then ok.

Which just makes me wonder why you bought it (hence my confusion, I guess, as to why you disliked it).

Each to their own and all that, of course. I'm not judging you on your BotW dislike :D

I guess I've never played Zelda as I've never really been a console gamer. The Xbix is the first console that I've actually bought for myself.

Never owned a Nintendo, besides from a donated Wii for the kids

A cheap way to play Zelda.. Hmm... What consoles do you have? I suppose the cheapest would be via an emulator.

Download an emulator and a rom and play Zelda : A Link to the Past which is one of my favorite games and really setup a lot of the template for what the other Zelda games would become and as its 2d you dont get the crappy framerate and low res visuals of the N64 stuff

If you want to go legit then a second hand GBA and the game will be reasonably cheap

If you have a Switch then BOTW is a must really.

You can also sign up for the online service as that has Zelda 1 on there so that's got you covered with the earliest and the latest games in the series.

Is the Wii U online service still available? Can you buy games on there? Is a Zelda game even on there?

You could even splash out on a SNES mini and play Link to the Past and loads of other great SNES games. That's an idea!

But is Botw the best place to start? is there back story I'd be missing? Thanks for the advice.

No back story as such, the Zelda backstory has multiple timelines and is pretty odd. (The NES games are at the end of the timeline, debatable where everything else is.)

The issue with BotW is that it’s vastly different in many ways from the other Zelda games, with its open world structure, lack of traditional dungeons, whole different weapons and abilities structure, different ‘feel’. BotW is an unusual beast, simultaneously the peak of the Zelda series, but also rather unrepresentative of it. Arguably. Probably.

Nah, there's allegedly a shared timeline but they're basically the same self contained story just told over and over again. There are recurring motifs and races and stuff that appear in each game, but everything is reintroduced each time as if new and knowledge of previous games isn't assumed.

If you’ve played Ocarina of Time you might come across some well known locations and get some nostalgic tingling in your pants which you won’t get if you’ve never played it, but other than that it’s a brand new story with new characters etc. Well, Link, Zelda and Ganon are in it but they’re in just about every Zelda game but they’re different people in each game. Well, Ganon is the same... I’m complicating it.

All you need to know is absolutely nothing, but some history of the series might help you enjoy it a tiny more. You could just read the canon summary guide to the various games and the various time lines which those games take place in.

Okay thanks everyone. I get a bit twitchy if I don't play things in the correct order. But if it doesn't really matter then it's all good.

I’m very much like this too! I think part of me not playing Fallout 4 yet is that I haven’t finished New Vegas.

I couldn't possibly recommend anyone plays BOTW as their first Zelda. That would be a terrible idea.

Should at least play Ocarina of Time first. Ideally I'd say start with LTTP, then OoT, then Wind Waker, maybe then BOTW.

So this is *not* the official Nintendo trailer for Smash Bros

The official one has no music at all , however watching this I cannot believe this was anything other than a trailer where they just could not sort out the musical rights for it in time - the way things line up is way too much of a coincidence

Offical trailer (SFX only):

Trailer with music added :

I don't think that matches up at all. It even starts half way through a word a the beginning of the trailer.

I bet there's hundreds of songs that would match up with that trailer.

Whut

"Supersonic man out of you...." Sonic appears
"Burning through the sky" Charizard pops out of Pokeball
Some character poses right on cue at "Lady Godiva"
"I'm having a ball" as the Smash logo appears
"I'm a shooting star" as Kirby rides the star down out of the sky
"If you wanna have a good time, give me a call" in a game famous for couch play
"at the speed of light" as someone is punched into the sky
"There's no stopping meeee" as one character pushes back another blocking them
"defying the laws of gravity" as Samus and some others go into a slo-mo jump

Hell of a coincidence.

Maybe it had a different bumper, or the song started over black screen.
