guess : mail

That has to be correct, which leaves 2 to get.
Square and Theatre maybe? (letterbox film ratio?)

Square could also fit in with the triangular clue too, square of the two sides and all that bollocks.

Post subject:  Re: Codenames - Game 2, Round 2

We have a leftover from loud and a leftover from triangle, and potentially more for letterbox

Theatre would potentially fit loud and letterbox

Just so we're clear, as an answer to the clue 'TRIANGULAR', you and Trooper would like to propose the word 'SQUARE'?

Of course, it's entirely logical.

I'd probably go with Theatre before that though.

So this was my grid.

Despite "film" being a huge gift, I struggled and struggled and couldn't find a :3 for the life of me. Can anyone else see one?

Malc, what on earth was your third word for "noisy"?

Which evens things out to 1:1

Which means I need a volunteer from each side to lead their side into the final.

I really struggled to find even :2s for most of the blue words. "Grace", "limo", "compound" and "whale" were all tricky. I almost played ambroxen:2 (synthetic compound used in place of ambergris) but it felt a bit Google-heavy. I was very pleased with tyres:2. There was no way I could not play Singham once I realised it was an option, of course. Fortunately no-one got hung up on "pistol"... Chronology:2 was a little bit of a punt but I was wary of most clues for "post" overlapping with "mail" (which was red.)

I'm guessing Bolt as in Thunderbolt

And yeah, was a horrible grid. Most 3's were sabotaged by the post/mail similarity. 2's were hard enough.

The only one I did think of was "High Society" = grace (Grace Kelly)/film( A film what Mrs Kelly did appear in)/limo (something you tend to drive around in as high society). But it did have some potential others (theatre, maybe) and the possibility noone else would know/think of the film. (which given I'm about the least film savvy person, i'd hope was not the case). And that it may be objected to as two words. Natch.

Must have been bolt, assuming in the context of lightning bolt. Which doesn't really make any sound.

Valley must have been the other triangle one, which I can see.

Was there another one for letterbox, or were we meant to just revisit the earlier clues?

Yeah, I had no idea where you were going with that when you posted it. I had to check the grid I'd sent out to make sure I hadn't made a horrible error, as I couldn't figure it out even knowing your word list.

Revisit, else it would've been letterbox: 2, I'd have thought.

That's pretty good. I had a few ideas around stuff like sophistication for limo/grace, but the presence of theatre and maybe even wine were always in the way.

Yeah. It's ok to a degree to hit a grey early, so long as it's by far the weakest answer and so the last. It just gives your team another try later rather than passing.

When the potential miss is another colour... a slightly different matter. But you can always hope they remove the ambiguity before you use the clue. (I thought of "shot" for pistol/bolt/mail. But clearly film would need to be removed by the other team if it's to be a sensible clue.

Thunderbolt is what i was hoping for. You should have listened to jazzy. I did consider that whale, theatre and film might distract from bolt, but I thought that bolt was louder than all of those.

As for triangular, I did want to go for v-shaped, but it was deemed to be effectively two words. And yeah. I was hoping the fact that I went for unlimited, and there were two clues left over from before would point to that.

Post subject:  Re: Codenames - Game 2, Round 2

Yeah, thought that was where you were going. That's one of the problems with unlimited, I guess - we didn't know whether there were more things that applied to letterbox.

Fun! Who's captain for round 3?

I'm waiting for volunteers. And then foisting it upon the most chatty person who hasn't been captain should I not get any volunteers. I hope I do, as I don't want to go to the effort of finding the most chatty persons.

Unless I'm super blind. three people volunteered for first round, so one got put in as captain on seconds. I only needed one for the second round, and only one volunteered. So you're in.
