That's not how pricing theory and markets work, man.

What's stopping the games without microtransactions from costing £70-80?

I dunno!

If you don't know then it's probably not all that credible to suggest that microtransactions are the reason your game doesn't cost more.

Probably a good job I didn't do that then. Imagine how silly I'd look!

I genuinely don't know how else to interpret this:

Physical goods maybe but it seems pretty cheap to listen to music or watch films now too.

In other news, the Switch version of Mortal Kombat 11 apparently will lock most of the game modes out if you're not connected to wifi. What a bizarre decision for a portable console. Appears to be because of consistency checks, apparently savegame hacking to bypass the microtransactions was a thing on previous versions?

Oh, that's some powerful bullshit. Which ones are going to be unlocked?

Here's some US data I've seen that spans the last twenty years. (I don't have any handy UK data that's equivalent, but it looks broadly similar for most categories I think.)

Image

Technology is far, far cheaper than it was. Clothing, cars, and furniture is flat, which means they're all significantly cheaper in real terms today than in the late 90s. (check the "average hourly earnings" line.) Food is a little cheaper than it was.

Inflation isn't a universal constant; it's an aggregate effect across lots of market segments, some of which are actually deflating.

Dunno, just someone on a mailing list in work saying "most modes can't be accessed." I guess any of the ones where you earn or spend the Koins, if it is indeed an anti-hacking measure.

https://www.gamerevolution.com/guides/5 ... connection

"Both the Krypt and Towers of Time, as well as the standard online fighting fare against opponents around the world, won’t be accessible if you don’t have an internet connection. Any unlocks, such as costumes and skins, also won’t be available until you connect to the Mortal Kombat 11 servers. ... However, there is some good news... MK 11‘s story mode is playable from start to finish offline, as is the Klassic Towers offline mode. It’s just the Krypt and Towers of Time that require an internet connection. It’s absolutely recommended that, if possible, you play Mortal Kombat 11 while being connected to the web. Not only will you be missing out on rewards from various fights, and a large chunk of the game’s modes, but even prizes from the game’s Tutorials, such as the uber-cool Shao Kahn announcer voice, can’t be accessed."

This affects all platforms, but obviously much less of a hassle on PS4/Xbox/PC...

Maybe in general - consoles aren't, though. I wonder what "computer software" means, too.

I don't see any meaningful trend up or down for console launch prices in this data:

Here's a graph of that data. Adjusted for inflation, consoles are cheaper these days.

In case anyone is too lazy to click it’s because of the Neo Geo & 3DO.

EDIT: Weren’t there different versions of the Neo Geo though. One was called Neo Geo AGS or something which was a bit cheaper ... maybe.

EDIT 2: Oh it was called the AES and that was the home console version of the arcade machine. There’s also the Neo Geo CD which was cheaper too. But much crapper.

You can't. He's dead.

Anyway, I thought everyone was moaning about the Towers of Time, not The Krypt?
