I just assumed things floated when they were deep fried.

Hold it down with a boot spoon

Gone to Byron in Leeds. So hip, even the waitress has a beard.

Do you not remember the swimming baths of our youth? Kids clinging desperately to fillets of battered haddock, hot oil burning their darling little fingers, trying not to drown?

Yeah, but like people, not if it is in a cage and held down.

Yeah, but like people, not if it is in a cage and held down.

So, if you out a floaty thing (beach ball) in a big underwater cage, it wouldn't float upwards.

Is that like the guy jumping upwards on a moving truck and flying backwards?

Only as far as the roof of the cage, or the surface of the water. Whichever comes first.

Assuming the cage is heavy enough (or tied down), of course.

No 'roof'.

I'd say being in the surface of the water (or oil) was 'floating'.

Anyway, I've just realised something.

No, that wasn't the issue, more that the constituent parts (bun, burger, tomato, etc) would all drift away from each other in the fryer.

Coating the whole thing in batter generally would give it enough integrity, I expect.

The proposed new flag for New Zealand looks pretty cool.I'll probably end up following the run-off vote in March with far too much enthusiasm than is really necessary. Were Scotland to leave, we'd probably end up with a 'Blue Peter' competition to design a new one, rather than a proper referendum on crucial vexilological decisions.

So the Wu-tang Clan sold the only copy of their album 'Once Upon A Time In Shaolin' to that arsehole pharma guy who made the drugs really expensive, for 2 million dollars. So nobody will ever get to hear it but him.

However! There is a rumour going round that this was in the contract of sale, which would be utterly amazing if it was true:

Quote:
The buying party also agrees that, at any time during the stipulated 88 year period, the seller may legally plan and attempt to execute one (1) heist or caper to steal back Once Upon A Time In Shaolin, which, if successful, would return all ownership rights to the seller. Said heist or caper can only be undertaken by currently active members of the Wu-Tang Clan and/or actor Bill Murray, with no legal repercussions.

£17 for average pub burger, fries and a sprite. There are better places to go.

If you didn't order a boilermaker you're doing Byron wrong.

We have a Handmade Burger Co in Notts now. Any good?

I've been to the Five Guys and it's ok. Bit pricey compared with the US though.

I liked Five Guys, but you're not wrong about it costing a lot of money.

Best burger for me is from Almost Famous in Manchester, although I do like the Dead Hippy from MEAT*.

It's stupid because it's like $5 a burger in the States. It's amazing for that price.

Still a distant second to MEAT, but potentially rivalling Byron, GBK have upped their game. They used to be great when they started off but then lost their way and their burgers took second place to the sauce and shit on top of them. Their menu is now massively scaled back, not quite as much as Byron (and the Kiwi burger of much ludicrousness is still present) but they seem to have learnt their lesson.

There is a Meat Liquor and a Handmade and a GBK in Leeds. I like GBK when I was last there which was 2 years back.

Five Guys is cheaper than Byron, or at the very least the same price. Byron is generally done out better, and has more options, but the Amazing Drinks Machine in 5 Guys makes it better IMO (and I preferred their burger too).

MEAT wins because of cocktails and monkey fingers.

Everyone seems highly impressed by those, but Burger King and Pizza Hut both have them.

Hell, even the Bedford Pizza Hut has one.

I'm fairly sure Byron is cheaper, though. TO THE MENUATRON!

So, cheeseburger and chips with a coke:

5G: £8 + £4 + £2.50
B: £7.95 + £3 + £2.40

So while I'm the best kind of correct, they're a lot closer in price than I thought (and you get more chips from Five Guys).

Basic burger fractionally more expensive in 5 Guys, but free non-bacon toppings make it cheaper. And a Byron-sized fries is 2.75, which makes 5 Guys cheaper.

Plus you don't order a boilermaker :D

IMHO:

Famous Burger (Almost Famous) > Dead Hippy (MEAT*) > Cheese + Bacon burger (Five Guys) > Byron Burger (Byron) > Double Cheeseburger (McDonald's) > Garlic Mayo burger (GBK) > Double Bacon Cheeseburger (BK) > Kebab shop burger

Are the drinks in Five Guys bottomless? I mean, they were when I was there, but I wasn't sure if they were meant to be.

Unabashedly un-burger-related, but has anyone been to Pizza Buzz in Shoreditch?

You go to the counter, choose your base, choose your toppings, then they cook it in 2 minutes. You have your own fresh pizza at your table less than 5 minutes after walking through the door.

I mention this because it has one of those weird drinks machine in too.

Anyway, definitely recommended.

IMHO:

Famous Burger (Almost Famous) > Dead Hippy (MEAT*) > Cheese + Bacon burger (Five Guys) > Byron Burger (Byron) > Double Cheeseburger (McDonald's) > Garlic Mayo burger (GBK) > Double Bacon Cheeseburger (BK) > Kebab shop burger

Bleecker -> 5 Guys -> Meat* -> Byron -> McDonalds etc

I am growing increasingly suspicious that I just hit 5 Guys on a really good day, or that I just had really low expectations for it.

Are the drinks in Five Guys bottomless? I mean, they were when I was there, but I wasn't sure if they were meant to be.

Yes.

Also, Findus, are you a Londoner who is holding out on coming for drinks with us???

Rumbled! I was a Londoner until a month ago, when I moved to Brighton. Still commuting in to London Bridge so perhaps I will Fop along to one of your booze shenanigans.

Burger King is better than McDonald's imo.

I agree for everything except the McD's double cheeseburger, which is really nice. The big tasty sauce is well nice, too.
