FACTOID

There some urban myth (which might be true, who knows) that if you see a nuke go off in the distance you should hold your thumb in front of your face at arm's length and see if it covers the mushroom cloud. If it does, then you'll probably be okay.

That the character is doing that is a fact - whether it has any basis in reality is an urban myth. It's not logically inconsistent.

Not until the authors of the 199x games confirm it, it isn't. Until then he might just be doing a squinty thumbs-up and this is a retcon, albeit an appealing one. Has anyone ever seen any of the original artists talk about this?

I've just remembered that Fallout 3 is one of the games I'd started and never finished. Got a bit boring din't it. I got to a city on a boat and did a load of "go here, get this, come back here"-quests, if I remember rightly, which got tedious.

You, sir, are clearly mad.

I've played it through 70+ hours about ten times, including all of the DLC and lots of third party DLC from Nexus.

The only reason I stopped playing it is because it now looks like ass. And after playing games with better graphics it kinda looks like ass when you go back to it. I know that's really shallow and all, but when I first played it the graphics took my breath away. Now they're no longer as believable.

Fallout 3 was ass compared to New Vegas, though.

:this:

I definitely tried to play Fallout 3 twice, it may even have been three times.

Each time I just got bored, fairly early on.

Everyone was bumming it so hard I was sure I must be missing something hence trying it more than once, but ultimately it just wasn't for me.

It felt like an MMO except there were no other people in it, and no group content to aim for either.

New Vegas lost the "I am a lone explorer in this wilderness" feel when it introduced a much more heavily populated map, which for me was a step back from the other games.

Fallout in its entirety is about the theme. If you like that sort of theme then it sucks you in and makes you believe. Breakfast cereal, soft drinks, washing powder.. It's all there like a universe of its own.

I know, now I'm really exaggerating but to me Fallout 3 is the finest most detailed video game I have ever played. It's also, as crazy as it was, one of the most believable stories. Not in a "Oh this could all happen" sort of way, more of a swiss army knife sort of way. There's absolutely everything there to make it all feel perfect.

For every one else there's Skyrim and the other TES games.

Just hoping they do an absolutely killer box set, because I'm having it. I kinda feel sorry for poor old mum because her entire bed base now houses my vast collection of merchandise for the other games but hey, needs must.

Actually I never felt like a loner in the wilderness. It never had much atmosphere even when I was exploring deserted identikit facilities (filled with the same type of monsters) or learning about the place by reading piles upon piles of books filled with masses upon masses of text or listening to reams upon reams of dialogue from NPCs. It never gave me those chills you need from a game where you're supposed to be shocked to learn the world has been exploded by nuclear bombs.

That's just me though. I did like the weapons system though.

I am a loner.

Maybe not on the internet, but clearly IRL I don't like going out or having contact with any one. I always went it alone, so I basically told Fawkes et al to just bugger off because all they were doing was losing me XP every time they killed some one/something.

Favourite weapons for me were the dart gun primarily because I can be a rotten sod at times and sticking some one from a decent distance and then listening to them die was always a good laughing point for me :D Then the special Chinese Assault gun. I forget the name of it now but it was beast. The Fat Man was just pure LOLs too, especially the MIRV version that shot out 8 mini nukes at once.

I'll freely admit that Fallout 3 was a pure addiction for me and it lasted many years. I only really lost interest in 2012.

I actually recently picked it up in the Steam sale and now I've got it there. Put about 13 hours in before getting a bit bored. I was hoping that I would forget bits of it and it would be more exciting but I've already over done it. It's definitely one of those games that makes you feel so good that you wish you could experience amnesia, then play through it again. Not many games out there that have had that hold over me but Mario 64 was definitely another.

L-LOL.

New Vegas was closer in tone to the previous games IMO. Fallout, despite the premise, has never been particularly about being a loner wandering the wasteland. All of the original games had you encountering many different characters and creatures, helping them out (very Mad Max-y, actually)

FO3 was also a bit too... grey, for me. I liked the richer colours (albeit not many) in NV.

UPDATE 2/6/15 5.30pm: Hidden within the Fallout 4 teaser site source code is a hidden error code that references Fallout 3 character Masterbrain.

The robotic Vault-Tec Corporation creation is likely only being referenced as an Easter egg, but perhaps there's more to it?

"PA system failure has occured," the website code reads. "Shutdown of the Masterbrain has been authorised and all sensitive materials have been removed for security purposes. Please attempt re-access. Have a pleasant day."

Ugh don't ! lol. I know Bethesda are OCD about a certain date in October/November so I'm hopeful it's this year. Would be off to allow pre order for a game coming out in over 16 months !

Totally. My cheeks are open and I've got a tub of butter sitting on the side board softening as we speak.

I'm really hoping they do a nice box set. The original and New Vegas ones were amazing.

If I could add any form of criticism whatsoever it would be that the doggy doesn't look as good as the one in COD : Ghosts. The one in Ghosts has more realistic fur. But you know, now I'm being really picky.

I just hope they have sorted out the character stiffness that has plagued every game they have made so far. Not that it's important but hey, perfection and all that...

Yeah totally man. I'm not complaining :) It looks like they have used some sort of variation of the Skyrim engine which was miles better than Fallout 3.

It looks current, let's put it that way :)

And I get to play it on 4k. Wooo !

If you're buying a whole console pretty much for this one game then you're better off waiting until the review copies go out and somewhere like Eurogamer does a head to head then pick the platform that gives the best experience.
