I'd be surprised if I wasn't one of the millions made redundant from work in 2021.

I am thoroughly sick of it; the rhetoric, the lies, the posturing. Properly squeaky bum time, and they're playing all the same notes.

Very much this. Kind of why I'm not posting as much on it at the moment as thinking about it just gets me down and this year's been pretty rough as it is. I genuinely don't understand how anyone could look at it all now and think "yep, more paperwork, delays, red tape, and costs - that's brilliant". I sometimes find myself writing "why the hell are you still supporting this" letters to my MP in my head but that's really not healthy and were I to send it would probably not achieve much. I doubt very much that when it all goes down the Goves, Johnsons, and Cummings of this world will admit they fucked up, but will instead blame the EU, Remainers, Labour, the BBC, and probably Nick Clegg. I feel for those people (and probably slightly envy) who still cling to their Union flags, don't follow the news, and think everything's going to be better.

(We probably should start a new thread with a more apt title - five years ago I would have expected it all to be a long distant memory by now).

Yup. At some point this week, I'll be turning off the shopping cart bit on my site as with Christmas/Coronavirus/Brexit, postages delays and hassles are inevitable. I think about two thirds of the money I get through ConsoleMAD comes from the EU, so Brexit is going to hit that hard. And my site is just a one-man hobby site, so god knows how badly everyone else is going to be hit.

I am with you, Kern - it is profoundly miserable. I think that's because some of the worst people are glorying in it. And some of the ones I like have already clocked off for Christmas. Over time, some of the worst will probably have to back away, as they realise the cost. But it doesn't matter for now. Inebriation and happy things!

I've got a strange sense of relief now that we have finally ended the transition period.
I'm still quite sure we'll be worse off as a nation, and nothing would make me happier than to be proved wrong, but we're now going to be dealing with facts rather than speculation.
Let's see how things unfold, and if it turns out to be shit then that will make any future discussions on whether we should rejoin the EU a lot clearer.

I suppose we'll need a new thread now.

It'll have to be endured, like a rail replacement bus service (albeit one that actually doesn't really go where you'd planned it to, and the crew expect ticket checks every five minutes). I reckon we're going to start edging closer again, step by step, as people and businesses start getting frustrated by new red tape and additional costs. At least those who haven't spent the last four years obsessing over it all are now going to experience it all first hand, and I doubt they will be happy.

In connection with the events, a lot of activities unfolded, aimed, it seems to me, at popularizing completely different British industries. Since this topic is close to me, the titles and activities of the UK Space Agency look very interesting. On the one hand, it seems like politics. On the other hand, I don't see anything wrong with news like UK Space Agency signed a contract with ESA for ... and then insert according to the list

I've just had an email informing me that something I bought before Christmas from Germany on a back order, will no longer have the 20% VAT applied at their end. Instead, I'll have to pay the courier the 20% VAT and 'any additional handling fee's' upon delivery.

I'm betting that the handling fee's will be a lot more than I would consider reasonable.

We're experiencing something similar from the other end (the expat in Germany end).

I ordered a bunch of Brit goodies, as I do now and then, a while back, and there seems to be no prospect of them being sent any time soon. The shop has sent a number of helpful email updates and I won't be cancelling the order as these shops need the support, even if it does mean an extra bill for VAT/fees.

What a great idea Brexit was, eh?

After months of having things to get really fucking angry about, I've managed to just about keep a lid on things.

But this week has served up two items that have sent spiralling into a foul rage.

The first was the government's laughable and downright offensive replacement of the school lunch vouchers scheme (coin bags of tuna fish and all).

The second is this, which just truly underscores how little the Tories think of us. To borrow a phrase from markg, it's all just a fucking game to them.

you'd think the government might show a little more tact (or any at all would be nice), but they just don't give a toss. They'll probably just try and shift the blame on to the EU for everything.
