An interesting twitter thread about the Irish border - it literally runs down the middle of roads, through buildings and zig-zags across Motorways https://twitter.com/marksugruek/status/ ... 2312663041

Brilliant. So they need to build a wall, a great wall, a really good wall along the whole of the border, or they could try to move the border instead. Neither of those are viable options, so welcome to the latest impasse. |

Diarmaid Ferriter's "The Border" is a concise and fascinating introduction to the history of the subject. The take home from it all is that the only people who are going to do well out of it are smugglers. |

I’d love to see a united Ireland during my lifetime. And a united Korea too. I met a Korean guy while I was in Japan. We had a nice chat over a smoke and I didn’t realise they don’t call South Korea South Korea, it’s just Korea to them but with a part they can’t go to in the north. |

I'm struggling to comprehend how a democratic government could knowingly threaten its country's food supply and not face any form of reaction or opposition. I recognise this is all for show, to give the illusion that Mr Johnson has hit the ground running and is going to show it to Johnny Foreigner (who, unsportingly, is away on holiday right now), but this is the kind of stuff that really shouldn't be played with. |

NervousPete wrote: I'm struggling to feel anything but helpless horror at the moment. It's not a nice feeling. Aye. It's pretty grim at the moment. It's not even been a month since Mr Johnson entered Downing Street and it already feels like a lifetime, and an unpleasent one at that. A few months ago I was feeling slightly more optimistic. For instance, not having Brexited and actually having European elections are victories I didn't expect to happen. That momentum feels lost right now, and it feels like there's no opposition anywhere. Just remember that it's August and everyone's away. That's way we're getting so much noise from the government - nobody is around to actually challenge them. It's all castles in the air, designed to shore up their support. Come September, the fights will be just as ferocious as in the Spring. Hopefully right will prevail (or at least another extension). |

Following the current political débâcles here, in the US and the Ukraine, and looking back at our government's performance over the last 20 or so years, I don't think they've generally got a clue what they're doing. |

Yes, this is a good development. I think the use of "time-limited" is key here, as it provides a way for other parties or MPs to hold their nose and support any such motion. |

It's about fucking time he stuck his oar in. About 3 years too late I fear. Considering that May survived a number of no-confidence votes, how likely is this one to make a difference? |

Swinson's already described the plan as "nonsense", so Lib Dem support looks unlikely. Seems like Corbyn's doing pretty much the best thing he could do at this point, but I can see Johnson winning the no confidence vote and/or a general election, purely on his own brand of optimistic hot air. |

Yeah, Swinson has put the boot in so Corbyn's plan will likely fail without her support. |

There's still the possibility that Corbyn-sceptics could vote with Labour in a vote of no-confidence then reorganise during the 14 day period either around a less-polarising figure (in my head, it's always Ken Clarke) or take control of the Parliamentary agenda to pass either revokation, referendum, or further extension. The downside is the timescale is very tight. |

Being in Ireland is interesting to hear opinions and reaction to Brexit. 1 - Everyone thinks it is a stupid idea 2 - Majority of what I have heard indicates that most people think a No Deal Brexit would lead to a United Ireland 3 - Ireland is far more prepared for No Deal than we are, such as government grants being handed out to firms that conduct business with the UK to ensure all customs preparations have been made ahead of October, etc. |
