The whole mozilla related internet is not loading right now. I wonder how long before I can get the release version?

Dunno, but huzzah! Firefox 3 is distinctly faster and better than 2 for me. Although, I'm sorely missing the Firebug extension.

Anyway, huzzah!

Impressively, if you go to firefox.com and download the firefox 3 they give you.

It's RC3.

Idiots.

How does one tell that? Because I just did that and it doesn't say RC3, but the build date is the 29th of May.

It's definitely much faster when the phishing/forgery checks are turned off.

Ah no, I got it wrong, it's the final but the readme that comes up on first start does and fooled me.

Mm, I just downloaded it again via the direct link CUS gave earlier and the two files are identically sized.

It's using loads (15-20MB or so) more memory than 2 did when viewing 1 or 2 sites.

It's also incompatible with TabMixPlus, or rather, TMP says 1.0-3.0a" so you can't even have a single "Close current tab" button which is irritating as all hell.

I'd get nightly tools and force it but mozilla.org is mysteriously broken all to hell.

*sobs*

Hopefully this will fix the random crashing that at least 2 of my machines have been suffering from in Firefox for the last couple of months. And the huge memory footprint......

Mysterious? They've been begging people to download it on release day for ages, to try and break the record.

downloading it now. whee. if this is a failure I will weep and then write poetry about open source disappointment. 'mozilla' and 'killer' rhyme, right?

Sigh. You realise Opera 9.5 includes all that crap built in, and is quicker to boot?

Sillies.

Opera 9.5 does not have everything I want in add-ins built in.

The adblock was confusing, it couldn't download youtube vids, it couldn't get all pics on a page in one clit, it didn't have a weather forecast bar, it didn't have an option allowing me to open a page in IE, but in Opera, it didn't automatically tell me about coupons for any site I go to, it didn't have a fully featured version of SA Last read.

Make Opera do everything there and we'll talk :)

Oh and make it import all my firefox bookmarks too, it didn't seem to have the option.

Hmm, I think manual is the way to go there, use plenty of Copydex though.

You know you can click a tab with the middle mouse button/scroll wheel to close it?

So if I want to close 5 tabs I have to move the mouse 5 times instead of clicking a very useful button firefox ONE had an some geek with an agenda removed? Or if I'm browsing a forum I have to sit there and work out which tab I'm on, then move to it, rather than just clicking a nice static close tab button?

Daft.

Thankfully as the excellent Stu (Bookmark the time I said those words folks!) says, there's a dev build.

Or c-F4 but why the hell would I want to start pressing multiple keyboard buttons for an action in which the perfect solution was not only available but deliberately removed by some mong.

In the extensions I have for Firefox, only one of them is compatible with Firefox 3. I'll continue with the old one for now then.

Installed both FF3 and IE8 Beta this morning. FF3 seems ok but the new site I'm working on for work doesn't display properly in IE8. Great.

Is that because it's defaulting to standards-compliant mode but you're writing old-IE compatible code? There's a tag you can add to put IE8 in quirks mode.

So, given that I have no plug-ins running on me Firefox at home, should I download this beastie? I can't tell whether some of the posts about speed are genuine or sarcastic as I'm a web-mong.

Thanks!

Yes you should. I've been running FF3 for a couple of months. It's quite a bit faster and doesn't eat all your computer's memory.

I wonder if I should try this Firefox, and force myself to use it for 2 weeks like I did the last one.

(Spoilers: I forced myself to sue the last oen for a fortnight, and to also try and replicate the functionality of Opera within that time. About 80mb of downloads of extensions later I nearly managed it).

If they've improved it that much it might be worth a trial.

Anyone got Opera AND FF3?

Well the portable version is out, and I've downloaded it. Most of my extensions haven't been updated yet, but aside from that, it seems a bit faster so far; though I should wait 'til I've bogged it down before comparing.

Also, I should buy a faster USB stick.

Got most of my extensions working now, and it's still noticeably faster. I used to find switching tabs would hang Firefox for a while if a particularly large page was loading — seems to have been greatly improved.

Can't say I've really noticed anything else different so far, but I haven't been looking.

Go into
Code:
about:config
and change
Code:
browser.tabs.closeButtons
to 3 :)

Also, mmm FF3

edit: oh, I was hoping those code tags would just use a fixed-width font inline. ho hum

It is fast, though.
Much faster at loading this forum, for example.

There does seem to be a slight delay between me pressing the keys and the letters appearing in this text box, though. I'll get over it.
