There were some thoughts around that Microsoft want to go subscription based for the OS, and giving it away for free is actually just giving away the first year for free. See Office365.

Obviously not happening. Are you suggesting that after X amount of time, after updating to Windows 10, people's computers will simply no longer work unless they agree to pay a subscription?

It's not a paid upgrade because Windows 8 was the worst selling version of Windows in years, despite also being the cheapest.

The bulk of the money they will make from it will be from oem/enterprise licensing.

Normally when you press the windows key it fires up metro, like on win 7 it fires up the start menu.

Sorry I'm confused (I'm not reading etc). Can I upgrade to Windows 10 for zero dollars if I've got Wondows 8?

My Windows 8.1 boots into the desktop, and I literally NEVER see the metro interface unless I want to manually lock the screen or use the search, which is keyboard driven anyway, so who cares.

Free upgrades 'for consumers'. The assumption seems to be that that means non - pro editions, rather than retail product keys. I'm sure there'll be a stink and cheap pro upgrades or something if that's the case. I don't mind, the insider previews show decent progression from 8.1.

I know I'm one of the biggest W8 fanboys here, but I've just remembered one thing I hate that I hope that they resolve. When you have bluetooth turned on, the only way to not pair with a device in your device list is to completely delete it. So I always want my pen and mouse paired, but I only want by bluetooth speakers paired when I want to run sound through them as if I get home and turn bluetooth off to not have the sound pumped through them my Pen won't work properly. Then when I do want all three devices running, I have to go through a flaky and laborious re-pairing process. They should fix that shit.

Can't you go to "devices and printers" and just right click to disable them? That's what we do with the ones at the office (although that's Windows 7, I can't believe it's changed).

That is a workaround. But a pain in the arse workaround as they are located out of reach, and also I'm not the only person in the house with a device paired to them who may want to use them. Specifically, my wife is too short, so in order to workaround the lack of a simple toggle in Win8, I would have to physically move them to somewhere suboptimal.

Grim... Bluetooth devices are listed in Bluetooth - not devices - in PC settings. I haven't looked for a while but I think the same issue arises in the main control panel. I know, right.

I'm wrong, you can go through Control panel to do it. May be a 8.1 change as I can't have been that thick.

(Still an unnecessary faff when a simple toggle on bluetooth devices would be easy to implement given Win8 aims to hide all the control panel, and which isn't touch optimised)

It is. Faff with touch to do that - and PC settings which is optimised puts every other setting change within 2 swipes/touches. The touch optimised settings for 'sound' are volume/mute only.

My only concern is that it's not going to fuck up my ability to play games as I expect everything else to work fine. I might wait a month or so and make sure there are no horrific issues and then I'm quite looking forward to jumping into it. I do wonder how the upgrade process is going to work though. I'm going to use the opportunity to install the SSD I bought years ago and thus do a fresh install, so does that mean I need to install and activate Win7 then do an upgrade to Win10? It would be nicer if they'd let you download an ISO or something and make a Win10 install disc but just allow your license key for the previous Windows version to work with it.

This is all about DX12 for me. Finally, multiple GPU support in the API rather than some bodged attempt later. Vulkan sounds quite promising too, and I can run Mantle on my 7990.

I must admit I have been using Windows 8 since it launched and with IObit's start button I don't see much difference between it and Windows 7. Just recently I went to 8.1 and quite like the start button in that. The main reason I made the switch was because of Windows 7's core handling and the need for dirty hacks to get core parking working properly and so on. With an 8 core AMD 8 is absolutely essential.

The only thing I don't like is the forced driver signing. That has annoyed me on a good few occasions and there's no way I know of to permanently disable it.

But that's literally the only gripe I have. Bring on 10.

I'm not going to jump straight in though, it's more important to me that all my stuff works than getting a shiny new interface. In particular I'm going to check that all my emulators work properly on Windows 10 before upgrading my main PC to it.

Plus Windows 7 is the bomb anyway, so there's no hurry.

Depends what your view of an operating system is.

For me, an operating system is a platform to run my stuff on, therefore the compatibility, reliability and stability of that platform is absolutely the most important thing to me.

If I upgrade to Windows 10 and even a small amount of my stuff stops working properly or at all, then it's immediately more hassle than it's worth.

Particularly for me, I have some emulators that were originally written back in the Windows 98 days, albeit updated in the Windows XP era. They still run fine on Windows 7, I still use them on a regular basis, they need to work properly in Windows 10 for me to consider an upgrade.

I'll give Windows 10 maybe six months to bed in across the 'world userbase' as it were, and see how that pans out, and also perform my own testing on a second PC to see how my own important stuff works - then I'll start to think about an upgrade.

There's also the consideration of the other Windows machines in the house (kitchen media centre PC, Mrs Hearthly's PC, Hearthly Jnr's laptop, the bedroom media centre PC) - I want these to 'just work' and cause me as little hassle as possible, and I don't want family members getting confused by new UIs, so there's no great hurry to upgrade there either.

(See also, my in-laws, who've got a Windows 7 laptop and use me as IT support for everything.)

Have you got a source for that? It's a use case I'm very interested in as I'd like to do a proper clean install instead of an upgrade if possible.
