I have recently acquired a PS3 that is backwards compatible, and is able to play imported games. This gives me access to the entire playstation library up to the PS4.

There's also a custom firmware available for it that will let it play PSP games, which is quite nice.

I've owned all of these consoles before, and played most of the obvious headline games for each of them, but I'm wondering if you could suggest any weirdo games that I might have missed first time around. Can be imports, hidden gems or stuff that you think is worth a second look.

My tastes skew more towards the arcadey, and if it's been on PC, Xbox, Nintendo or sega platforms too, I've probably already played it.

How about The Warriors, an overlooked and supposedly great and arcadey Rockstar game. I haven't tried it myself, but it is on my list of things to purchase in the nearish future.

THE RED STAR is an over-looked PS2 gem I really enjoyed.

Futuristic mixture of side-scrolling beat-em-up with boss & mini-boss battles that play out like old-skool SHMUPS.

Nice presentation, solid controls & pure skill-based gameplay.

Probably about one or two pounds on Ebay these days....

Fatal Frame is a brilliant game, scary as all Hell. The controls will take a little getting used to, but they did click for me after about thirty minutes of play when I had a shot at it last year.

Sky Odyssey is a fucking brilliant forgotten gem. A flying game with nice feeling controls and some incredibly tight challenges, real edge of your seat stuff.

Great game. Shit graphics (it's a very early PS2 release) but awesome gameplay. Fantastic cinematic soundtrack too, makes you feel like Indiana Jones flying a plane.

there was an excellent rooftop bar in Singapore (somewhat dodgily called Loof), which had a Bishi Bashi arcade machine. All the sexy young things were dead impressed* by my PS1-honed Bishi Bashi skillz.

*they weren't

Thanks for all these suggestions. There's some great stuff here. I've been able to confirm it's a debug unit, with full ps2 hardware compatibility, and it's still on a firmware from 2007, so it's still easily hackable.

Gonna have some fun with this!

My favourite Playstation 2 game was Gregory Horror Show. Check out that creepy goodness.
