I'm on the electoral roll, but I've only been back at my flat for a couple of months and I'm not sure it'll have updated.

I've not received a voting card or anything through the post.

Can I just turn up at the polling station?

Yes, they'll have the roll so you can see if you're on it or not. You don't need your card to vote,.

I've also lost my card, assume I need to take some ID with me to vote?

Nope, though if you think you look a bit suspicious it might be a good idea.

See I find this odd, surely anyone could walk up give my name/address & place my vote?

Yes, there is that risk. There are (I think) procedures to deal with the situation where you find out you've already voted.

At the county elections last year, I didn't have my card and when asked for my address gave my previous one. Then corrected myself, and got the house number wrong. Then, when I did get the address right, the clerk struggled to find me as she'd misheard. Eventually I got my ballot paper.

Do I have to go to the polling station which was printed on the card or can I go to a different station which is closer?

Annoyingly you have to go to the polling station you're told to. Only they will have your ballot paper.

Someone actually did this to me at the last General Election. My ballot got taken but put into a separate box.

And then probably just ignored.

Considering how much importance is placed on voting, it is indeed an odd state of affairs, and there's no doubt that it does go on. As individual ballot papers are identifiable, if you turned up to vote and someone had already wandered in claiming to be you, it would be possible to discount the fraudulent vote, but if the real person never shows up it won't be discovered.

I seem to recall a year or so back that this was one of the areas that was being looked at for reform.

I would expect at the minimum you need to turn up with some photo id before you can vote.

Main issue really is that any form of photo id for voting must be easy to obtain and free. Otherwise, it risks becoming a poll tax .

Thankfully, we'd probably be spared the situation in the US, where voter id laws immediately remind people of Jim Crow.

Yes I am sure there are quite a few voters who do not have passports or photo card driving licences.
Hmm in that case I suppose household bills/birth certificate can be used for ID.

I jsut checked the Northern Irish regs. You can get a free card if you don't have something suitable.

Did the national ID card scheme idea die on it's head?

I'm currently sitting 10ft away from the team doing the work to change this into a digital system, first step is to make the electoral roll digital. Online voting is coming though, which will have a whole different avenue of fraud :D

It was the first thing the coalition did before they set about demolishing everything else.

At the very least you should be able to go into any old polling station and vote. Too many people on Facebook saying they are too far away (they should have registered for postal votes instead, but that's a different story).

It should be as easy and secure as is reasonably possible to vote. Spending millions on making it as easy as possible to allow anyone who basically couldn't arsed otherwise to indicate their very vague preference shouldn't be any kind of a priority.

Oh, balls. I suspect that I'm currently registered at my old address 600 yards away from where I live now*

It's certainly "reasonable possible" to do it via the Internet.

Sure and it should be implemented where it will save money. What I'm basically saying is that anyone moaning on Facebook that they can't vote for whatever reason obviously doesn't feel very strongly about the whole thing.

Our local polling station is luckily just a short walk. We have performed our democratic duties.

My gf's been in the polling station over an hour, they wouldn't let her vote, and told her she couldn't. I walked out as I didn't think I could contain my anger for much longer.

Yeah, it's not quite that simple :) There are always ways to game the system, there will always be fraud, it's just when you move to digital it changes the type of attacks you get. The total amount of fraud will almost certainly be less though.

All I had to do was turn up, give the name of the house and say "yes" when she asked if my surname was Lewis. Brilliant security. I may be going back later wearing a hat.

Wild guess is issues to do with nationality?

Maybe I'm tired, but isn't "wouldn't let her vote" different from "wasn't able to vote for the party she wants to"?

If she's voted before in the UK, then it shouldn't be a problem now, unless there was an error with registration or something?

I turned up to vote in two places and it turns out I wasn't registered in either. In Shipley. IN double cufffed shirt and brogues. With my work hair. Oops.
