You don't have to - that's a optional boss, so you can come back to it later.

Yeah, we can't kill Father Gascoigne either. Bamba just threw his controller in disgust. :DD

I just murdered the cleric beast after your left. The secret was spamming molotovs it turned out. I'm still not convinced I'll get past Father Dickface so my Bloodborne experience might be about at an end.

That boss fight is brilliant. Stunningly difficult at first but when it all clicks and you’re dodging around and wacking him on his arse you feel like a badass.

If you’re thinking about giving up though - make sure you call in some co-op assistance.

Or make yourself available for some friendly cooperation and see how others are fairing.

Of course not, how could I? It's not like the fucking thing explains any aspect of itself, not even the most basic of controls. Which is another thing about it that's grinding my gears somewhat.

Bollocks to calling for help though, I'll either git gud or give up; anything else is cheating.

Don’t be an idiot, it’s part of the fun being helped and helping others. Bloodbourne has a whole mechanic which revolves around friendly cooperation and invasions. You’re just the kind of person who would dump it after seeing a fraction of what it has to offer and friendly coop would allievate your frustrations and probably help you get into it. You can always choose when you’d like some help (usually for a difficult boss) and when you’d rather they fuck off.

Dark Souls had the simplest of tutorials which was basically a set of messages on the floor in the first area telling you how to do a few things. One of them was a lunge attack. I spent about half an hour trying to do what it was telling me to do only to find out after looking online that the starting weapon you get as a dex character can't do that type of attack. Fuck needlessly impenetrable games.

Exploring and listening to the shoddy voice-acting (for the music box) and reading the description when you pick up the bells (for the multiplayer).

Very nearly killed Cleric Beast first time but died when he had just a sliver of health left. Gonna grind some more blood echoes and buy a shitload of molotovs.

There's a troll near one of the ladders up from the sewer. Kill him, then take the ladder that's next to him and take a look around.

You can knock on doors with a red light outside of them.

The bells are in the Hunters Dream.

After beating gascoigne, you can point her at one of two places - the area after him, and the clinic you started.

I won't say which is preferable, mind.

Gascoigne isn't actually too hard, assuming you have the right gun.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
If you have the pistol (if you didn't pick this up as the starter, you can buy it after getting the saw hunter badge from the pig underneath him. It can be done with the blunderbuss, but the timing is more precise), just shoot at him whenever he looks like attacking. When stunned, just wander up to him and put your main weapon through him. when he transforms, make sure he's away from the wall, use the music box and then o a charged R2 on his back. and then ram your weapon through him as before. It may help to go into the fight with 5 extra bullets through pressing up on the d pad, and then healing and finding a blood vial on route. Failing that, you can use his weakness to getting blocked by gravestones fairly well (The way I've always done it up until earlier today, whereupon I was surprised at how easy the way I've described above is)

You have to visit both places before you can use them.

I found Gascoigne easiest on the stairs to the right, as his gun won't hit you.

I found Gascoigne easiest letting him chase me around the large gravesite tomb just next to the stairs, especially during his 2nd stage.

If you can learn to be the Parry King Gascoigne is trivial. Unfortunately I was shit at being the Parry King throughout the entire game and never mastered it. In fact, I barely used it and I was almost exclusively went two-handed throughout.

This is broadly how I approached it. (Well tonitrus and damage dealing gun as compared to parry gun). Same for dark soulses.

I decided for this playthrough to actually use the parrying mechanic. It's transformed some right bastard enemies into almost walkovers. And it a lot easier to pull off than I'd found in the past.

Who is this parrying mechanic and how do I meet him?

In all seriousness, how do I do a parry? Is it like Metal Gear Revengeance?

Oh that thing. And you can follow up with some kind of visceral attack or something?

Not managed that. Well, I've managed to get them to stagger but then I don't seem to catch them in time to do anything remotely visceral to them.

Yeah parrying normal enemies is something I can do quite easily, but I had to abandon it for the cleric beast as I just couldn't time it properly.

Good news! Chalice dungeons don't respect ng+/++ etc, so you can come back whenever.

Bad News! You're being beaten by just a regular NG Rom.

It's quite good for gascoigne -

(fight at about 2:30)

Even despite a few errors, and entirely messing up the backhit with the music box and also missing the final visceral attack, manage it on my first try with this tactc.

I cleared out the rabble around the fire, avoided the big lumpen thing. Pushed on, had about 4000 blood echoes but nothing of note to spend them on in the hunters dream. Fell down on to a walkway populated by man rats, just hoping to find a way back to the hunters dream that is not back at the start. Killed by a man rat. Now I'm miles from my blood echoes and no idea how to get back there.

Turned it off

Hint - once you've beaten up the bonfire mob walk through the door and smash the barrels near the fence to find a gap. Kick in some dogs and head for a house with a closed door. Go through the house (don't go upstairs) and then up some steps. Open up your first shortcut gate.

Yeah the start is pretty brutal I think. Weirdly the game gets easier once you activate the doll and can level up and find blood shards to upgrade your weapons. Now I'm making mincemeat of two brick trolls at a time, although the weird pole beasts can sometimes surprise me.
