2,300 days ago David Cameron was Still PM (just over 6 years and 3 months), whomever is next, will be the 5th in that time period. (If Boris comes back is he the 3rd and the 5th?)

I'd say the party would be out of its mind to bring Johnson back from the wilderness, but then they did elect Truss.

Imagine it though

Johnson becomes PM again
Standards committee says he is unfit to be an MP
By-election is called in his seat
He loses

Imagine that

Well some Tory MPs are apparently saying they'll trigger by-elections in their own gaffs if he announces he's serious about standing again, so double wow.

So glad to see the Tory party unified once again in this moment of crisis.

I note it was fairly easy for Truss to go. Even with war in Ukraine ongoing, and the energy crisis at home.

I'm not a fan of Boris, so I would find that funny.... hilarious, delicious even..... but then again it wouldn't be good for the country, and it would just end in a load of pissed off people (both anti boris, and of course the pro-boris gammons).

Plus, it makes the country look like an absolute laughing stock, internationally.

I'm in North Yorkshire. Yesterday in Haworth, the people at the next table were united in their belief that "Boris" should come back, he was a bit naughty but he was surrounded by idiots (and I think they thought it was all the idiots' fault). And today, having stopped in tiny Rishi's* constituency, in a well-to-do horse racing town, population , more or less the same conversation was going on in the cafe. Look North had just been through asking if there should be an election.

They walk among us. I used to rely on Yorkshire folk for good sense.

* Seriously. I hadn't realised how little he is - once you see it, you can't unsee it.

I'm waiting to hear that argument myself so I can point out that he appointed said idiots and deliberately purged everyone who was a non-idiot when he got in so he wouldn't be having any leadership challenges. I really hope that those people are aberrations because, Christ help us, if the electorate put that bastard back in at the next general election I don't think I'll ever have anything but utter contempt for my own country ever again.

I really wanted them to look my way and include me in their conversation. I was three pints in, mind, and so were they, so it would probably all have ended in laughter. They seemed like they would listen and ignore, rather than get punchy, had I thrown in "possible narcissistic sociopath" or, my preference "genuinely worthless piece of shit".

If the public get to vote on something then the worst thing wins. And that's just how it is I'm afraid.

WTF was that speech?

Camera/autocue not in the same place, so making it really obvious that he was reading from one, unsure what to do at the end, like he was expecting more? No questions taken, about 90 seconds long

All very odd, a slightly more confident Liz Truss?

He was pretty robotic and the speech was devoid of anything meaningful.

About the only pleasure I'm getting is the thought that i might finally never have to think about or look at Johnson ever again, and for that small mercy I am most graceful.

The results of the US Midterm elections are starting to come in, and it’s looking like actually the Democrats could do ok. It’s not appearing to be the predicted Republican surge which is nice. With the Brazilian election a week or so back kicking Bolsonaro out , this is the second time I’ve woken up and not been disappointed by the results. It feels odd.

Are the midterms just mock exams? Like, nothing actually changes, but here's how you might do if this was a real election?

Sadly not. Losing one or other part of Congress seriously damages the chances of legislative success, and opens the door for all manner of political games such as not passing a budget causing government shutdowns.

The House of Representatives (elected every two years, with the new House starting in January) also has the power to impeach, whilst the Senate can block judicial and governmental appointments.

Mostly affects domestic issues, but from an international position a really strong set of results for the Republicans would likely seriously damage any further funding for Ukraine or climate policies.

The part of the President usually does badly in mid-terms, so this is a very good result, but still not as good as before.

Of course, also many state elections and referendums also take place, with abortion rights in particular being a major issue - Vermont and Michigan have both voted to protect the right into their constitutions.

Yes! Very relieved about Bolsonaro but it was tighter than we would have hoped.

But that wasn't exactly a fair election with lots of voter suppression. Take that out and it'll be much clearer.

The BBC are reporting a series of police raids across Germany on far right nutjobs planning to storm the parliament and restore the monarchy.

Quote:
A German man referred to as a prince called Heinrich XIII, 71, is alleged to have been central to their plans

If he's 71, has he been using that title his whole life? Mate, it's not going to happen. Just LARP instead.

I think they might have the wrong Heinrich here - the insane numbering system of the House of Ruess makes it hard to track down. I'm not certain how the House of Ruess can possibly claim the Imperial German throne, but one of them was married to Anni-Frid from Abba for a while, which gives them as good a shot as anyone I guess.

I went to Tesco late this afternoon before it shut at 6 with Helens words rattling in my ears - "it'll be chaos!"

It was even quieter than during the first lockdown, no queue at the petrol pump or checkout and everything I wanted still there.

I'm not sure I'd put money on the reason being that everyone else prepared well in advance this year :(

Bags of sprouts were down to 19p and they were putting stock out ready for post-Christmas reopening.
