It's utterly sickening that someone would even propose such a thing.

Ugh. I don't think I've ever despised an administration more.

Just saw this on the BBC news website front page.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-58929453

Quote:
A man has been arrested after reports that Conservative MP Sir David Amess was stabbed at a constituency surgery.
Essex Police said they were called to reports of a stabbing in Leigh-on-Sea at 12:05 BST and recovered a knife from the scene.
They said they were not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident.
Former party leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith said he was "praying for a full recovery".
He said on Twitter: "My thoughts are with David Amess MP and his family at this awful time.
"Praying for a full recovery following this appalling, shocking news. This angry, violent behaviour cannot be tolerated in politics or any other walk of life..."

Devastating

I was on a zoom call with my MP and MrsA came down, told me to mute it and said "An MP has been stabbed". End of call, she was off to do her surgery work.

It's sickening.

The Standards Commissioner has found a Tory MP guilty of dodgy dealings, so the Tories want to throw out the findings.

Not sure this is how you restore trust in politics.

No, corruption is still bad, but we're not going to do anything about it this time for reasons, and we'll change how the committee works to make sure that nobody notices the corruption in future

It's the utter contempt that really gets to me.

Checking the voting lists, and yes, my MP when faced with doing the right thing or somehow not making it to the chamber, voted on the party line. Never a good idea to write when angry, however...

I feel like this country is about done. Neither politicians nor populace can really be bothered making a proper showing of doing their bit and so we're lazily sighing our way to the bottom of the barrel.

I was thinking a similar thing as I was reading through this thread. Now, I'm not and nor have I ever been particularly politically active but even I can recall when the whole 'sleaze' thing was a big concern and it seemed like people were booted for it, what happened to all of that?

It seems like these days it's very hard for the pollies to mess up in a way that results in any repercussions at all.

This tactic of governing by reaction is awful. They seem to push the boundaries by seeing what the public pick up on, notice, or react to and then roll back the instances where this happens, so they seem to feel free to let pretty much any awful shit pass in the idea that if the public raise an outcry, they’ll just undo it, no harm done.

So that's twice in (how many days ago was the vote for shit in rivers?) days where Conservatives have voted for something and then the very next day when they realise that EVERYONE hates how they voted, they have immediatly said "oh we didn't mean it like that! "

and yet, they are still polling at over 40%!

What an ignorant country we live in.

It's the ongoing relentlessness of it that really gets to me. If it's not corruption, it's the on-going disaster of Brexit; if not Brexit, it's pouring shit into the rivers; if it's not pouring shit into the rivers, it's the Prime Minister making Britain look stupid on the world stage, and so on ad nauseum.

Whilst I've been cutting down my daily intake for my own sanity's sake, I just cannot comprehend what people still see in these people. It's not even like they're competently evil or people I disagree with but can respect.

Gah.

Bring back the good old days of Michael Howard as Home Sec. At least he was a grown-up awful bastard.

I was listening to the radio this morning and No Surprises came on. And the line "Bring down the government, they don't speak for us." of course resonated strongly. And it made me think about how furious(ly teenage) I felt about things back in 1997. But those really were the good old days, pre-millenial tension or not.

The Mail published some of its own reader survey results the other week (maybe two or three weeks ago?) and the results were pretty interesting.

I couldn’t find a brilliant copy of them, apologies, and I didn’t want to go clicking around giving them ad revenue, but no matter how they try to spin these results, I think there is some regret creeping in. Especially the EU vote.

I’ve wondered this (because I’d be in that 41%; my knowledge and care for the royals is poor). If Charles abdicated, or just refused the crown (if abdication is only when in-post) does it go to his son, or would it be his brother (or… sister?)
