Yes, if they could get away with it they would. The very thought of them even raising a trial balloon, perhaps by some backbenchers initially, to "see how it plays". Fills airtime on talk radio stations, and see how it spreads.

Watering down of the Human Rights Act will come first I bet. As with legal aid, because people we don't like benefit from it too, it's easy to whip up a mob. Incredible how effective "othering" can be.

At the time I thought it was the worst thing possible, but I am missing the performative incompetence. This getting things done - but all of them are idiotic - is much worse.

What a narrow-minded, insecure country we've become.

And yet responding to this culture war with-us-or-against-us bullshit just means we're playing their stupid game too.

If someone puts a sticker on a lamp post, is that a crime?

If so, what happens if someone who disagrees with the sentiments on the sticker writes on it?

I can't stop thinking about the reports of David Cameron going on a camping trip with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. I'm mean, there's nothing wrong with going on high-risk adventure holidays but this seems up there with "Afternoon Tea with Putin" or the "Salzburg Sound of Music Tour" on the list of worst excursions ever.

All this talk of the breakaway football Super League, and how Boris Johnson is talking about personally intervening. Wasn't he only saying the other week that greed is good?

I'm also not entirely sure what the government can do, short of nationalising the clubs.

The noise from the "Big Six" indicates that they don't give a flying fuck what the fans, press, government or FA think. They want guaranteed income forever. Apparently they've taken to describing traditional, matchgoing supporters as "legacy fans"

I know nothing about football but have seen this mentioned on Twitter loads the past couple of days. Would anyone like to explain it to me?

From what I can gather, it's 6 clubs who are joining a super league to play against each other? Surely this means more football? If you're a fan of football, what's not to like?

Post subject:  Re: Political Banter and Debate Thread

Yeah, the news reports could definitely have done a better explainer on why everyone is so angry. I thought they were still going to be playing in the other things?

Post subject:  Re: Political Banter and Debate Thread

The main issues are the self declaration of the "Big Six" and them saying that they have a divine right to play the best teams in Europe every week. The claim is that the champions league is devalued because no-one wants to watch Barcelona play the Serbian champions or the Greek runners up for 3 months before they get to the "big" games.

The worst part for me is the founder member status meaning that the 12 clubs who start the league will never be removed from it. It's a closed loop, private party, with Chinese and Indian TV money and everyone else can bugger off.

The proposal is that few teams can earn places in the ESL on merit, but the OG 12 would never be at risk of relegation.

And with 6 teams from England in there from the start, hard luck Leicester, Everton, West Ham etc, you're never getting to play.

There seems to be an assumption that people want to see the best teams play the best teams, week in, week out. They don't seem to realise how dull that will get. I'm rather glad that as I get older, my interest in football fades more and more. I doubt that fans of the game have taken too kindly to being called 'legacy' fans.

Everyone in the UK (the legacy fans) hates the idea, but 60k seats are small beans compared to a TV audience of billions

Plus the added cash for those locked in teams, which means they will only get bigger and bigger and price everyone else out of the market when it comes to players.

Post subject:  Re: Political Banter and Debate Thread

I read somewhere its $3 Billion for each club, you can see why they might be tempted for that amount! Even if it means they can't compete elsewhere (which I believe they are going to challenge in the courts)

I've been wanting a super European league for ages (and if it was done properly, it might even get me back interested in club football) but to make it a closed system until 2035 (or whatever it's going to be) is just stupid.

In my opinion what makes football better than almost any other sport is the relegation and promotion between divisions, and the fairy story of one team climbing the ranks from non-league to premier league. The Dream of small clubs of one day playing in the top flight.

I love watching cricket, but it really galls me that the minor counties don't really have an opportunity to become first class counties. (which is heading in an even worse direction with the 100). NFL in the USA is even worse.

I really think that's where the anger comes from, taking that away.

Sorry that's a bit rambly, but that's me at the moment.

I absolutely loved the Champions League in the 90s and early 00s, the big teams and the forrin stadia, the exotic players, the history but also the competitiveness.

I personally feel that some of the glamour was lost when the champions league was expanded so much, and also the seeding system set up to ensure that the big guys are the most likely to reach the knockout stages takes and then we see a bunch of big guns playing cagey, more afraid to lose than keen for the win.

I'm dead against this Super League crap. BAH.

Whilst I think of it, for the past couple of nights I've been getting quite strident ads for the Conservative Party during Youtube videos. Chuckled at the one blaming Labour for councils going bankrupt. Think years of Tory cuts in government grants and caps on council tax might also be a contributing factor.

We voted via postal ballot lat week. We’ve had maybe five different conservative leaflets pushed through the door recently. A single Labour leaflet came through the foot at 7pm last night. I assume there will be a fair increase in postal voting this year, so they’ve completely missed the boat with this. Talking of boats, now that Johnson has deployed the navy to scare some French fisherman, so the flag-waving Tory voters will be having a great old day, I’m sure.
