It's a great idea in principle, but I doubt it'd do much - anyone that is an anti-vax conspiracy theorist isn't magically going to have their kid vaccinated because of this, they'll just take them out of school and home-school them instead. Which, arguably is better for any kids in said school that are at risk from immunosuppressant disorders etc. but is most likely going to negatively impact the education of the kids that are taken out of school.

I think it’s New York, but certainly one or more states. In practice it amounts to the fact that they can’t physically enforce it, nor deny a child an education, so if your child isn’t vaccinated you have to pay a fine. I think it’s about $100. I think that’s workable, but the fine REALLY needs to be on a sliding scale, because $100 is a huge amount to some and kindling to others.

Oh, I got a few details wrong. It was only a few neighbourhoods in NY (to start with... I think that expanded) and the fine was $1,000. The thing with all these "moderate" Tories stepping down is, that they are likely to be replaced by more right leaning Tories in any upcoming election. In many places anything blue will get elected. Doesn't this in effect push the Conservatives even further to the Brexit Party? Whereas if they'd stood as an independent, they would surely take some blue votes with them, and possibly let in a different party, which might cause the Tories to reflect on their direction of travel?

Aye. I'm increasingly worried that the Tories are aping the US Republicans in appealing evermore to a rabid base rather than seeking a broader church. Whilst it might be temporarily successful for them electorally, I don't think it will provide the party opportunities for long-term growth, and it makes the body politic extremely dirty and nastier than is currently the case.

The decision by itself makes sense. Being mayor of London is a way to remain politically relevant whilst being outside of the Parliamentary fray. The equivalent of hiding in the Worcester until it all blows over. But he's up against a very strong incumbent, and it's hard to see where his support would come from outside the Tories. He might be aiming to get sufficient second-choice votes from Labour, Lib Dems, and Tory loyalists to pull it off, but I'm not sure what his chances are without a political machine behind him.

She doesn't think she will vote for him, and was thinking Green/Lib Dem (first/second choice). If there are others like her, then he might not be as safe as he'd like.
