Obviously, terrorism is bad, but there's something wonderfully, haplessly, British about this attempt:

Quote:
It is alleged that Chowdhury, 26, who works as a self-employed Uber driver, had set off from his Luton address about two hours before his arrest and he used his satnav to try to drive to Windsor Castle. After he arrived at a pub of the same name, he drove on and eventually ended up near Buckingham Palace in central London.

I assume they mention that he's an Uber driver to highlight how completely inept he apparently is at finding places and how that would make him a fucking terrible taxi driver, as well as a fucking terrible terrorist.

Dull answer: think it is to avoid defamation claims by people with the same name, age and hometown. Putting an occupation in narrows the number of people it could possibly be.

I think we are leaning towards "sooner" in the decision tree to turn NK to glass. Quite worrying

I dunno. Who would pull the trigger?

If America do it they know that it will kill millions of South Koreans as well - everyone knows that it is the equivalent of nuking both countries (and possibly some others if Kim decides to go out in a blaze of glory). Plus there's a chance NK could fling a nuke into America now.

SK wouldn't do it; suicide.

China won't do it; they're right next to them.

NK won't fire first; it would be suicide.

So as long as we don't have a totally insane person in charge of a nuclear power, we're all okay.

That was excellent.

But:
Hate to be That Guy but suggestions on the web are it is a spoof. This is based on postcode for tory hq being wrong, and Reebok pumps not being released until 1989.

The hopelessly unconvincing VHS filter effect on the video is the more obvious giveaway.

BBC2 had an actual documentary on young conservatives about five years ago. Judging by my comments at the time, I rather enjoyed it.

Rees-Mogg favourite to replace May

Before reading the article, I couldn't understand why on earth he'd be anyone's favourite, but in the article it says

Quote:
The poll by the Conservative Home website found that Mogg is now well ahead of his more senior rivals for the job, David Davis and Boris Johnson.

Have they really got no-one better than these three muppets to put forward?

There was an interview with Mhairi Black a while back wherein she seemed to speak well of Jacob Rees-Mogg which--given the gulf between their politics on paper--fills me with some hope he'd be more reasonable than most. God knows he's a better candidate than fucking BoJo just by dint of not being fucking BoJo. If he ends up in charge of the country and I think we'll just need to admit that it's time to shut the place down and turn off the lights.

I am not sure which is worse, With JRM you know exactly what he stands for, and you could pretty well imagine he'd stick to his guns on those principles, even if you happen to vehemently disagree with them, and think that he is quite an odious character. With BoJo though, I get the feeling that he would pretty much do anything to further his career, some of which might be alright, but other stuff not so much.

I think that's quite the tough call.

It's weird because he comes across as just about the worst of all of them. Maybe Philip Davies just about edges him out, but it's close.

JRM is basically Bertie Wooster without the charm. He's openly anti-gay, says that the laws of Catholicism are more important than the laws of the UK, and whenever I see him speak I have never come across anyone more detached from the reality that most people face in my life, always banging on about how he thinks all families should hire a nanny and keep them in their families for generations, and so on and so forth.

He's the pinnacle of mediocrity + money + privilege = success.

Well known leftie agitator* Matthew d'Ancona rips the Tories a new one.

Quote:
Pity a party that has the likes of Ruth Davidson, Amber Rudd and Matt Hancock in its ranks and yet is taking seriously the idea of Jacob Rees-Mogg as May’s prospective successor. What would once have been an amiable joke is now a measure of the Conservatives’ drift into an orbit of their own creation, the radio signal from Earth growing weaker by the day.

Yes, it really is that bad. To be absolutely sure that Labour forms the next government, all the Tories have to do is carry on as they are.

Could be worse; could be Corbyn.

Bless his little red cotton socks, says I. Imagine if someone even remotely electable was in charge; we'd have a Labour government! /shudder
Fortunately for all concerned, though, common sense hasn't prevailed.

In the meantime, Tory pinup and pantomime toff Jacob Rees-Mogg has come out that he is against abortion in any and all forms, believes that the second of conception is when a fully formed human being exists (I look forward to his call for full police investigations into all miscarriages), and is completely against gay marriage, Muslim marriage, civil marriage ceremonies, Hindu marriage, divorce, remarriage, and any form of marriage that is not explicitly Catholic.

He's a fucking twat.

Much like trump, it's a case of those expressing shock at Rees-Mogg's opinions apparently never having read anything he's ever said or written.

I'm not in shock at his opinions, which have always been shit, but at the sudden rush to lionise him as some kind of populist hero and leader.

I think they're just so far out of touch that they honestly think that most people will find that sort of shtick endearing somehow. Same as with fucking Boris. They think that because he was on HIGNFY that time and there's that funny picture of him on a zip wire that the plebs will love him. But then again I didn't think the fucking plebs would be stupid enough to vote for Brexit so what the fuck do I know?

Most of these 'who should be the next leader' polls are basically testing who the general public have heard of, rather than who's rising through the Tory ranks.

I didn't think "the plebs" would be stupid enough to vote for a demonstrably utterly failed 1960s Socialist dogma-driven relic from that less-than-glorious political era which saw the decline of the UK, either, and in such numbers so as to secure a hamstrung, useless hung parliament at the very moment in our history when that is precisely the last thing that we need. But, (a) people are generally thick; (b) have very short memories; and above all (c) somehow believe that just because the Tories are crap - and they are - there's somehow a finite limit in "crapness" whereby any alternative [Trump, Corbyn etc.] must somehow be an improvement by default, as according to some natural laws of nature or something. You know, the whole "I just fancied a change"/"anything's got to be better than this" brigade. [Protip: there isn't such a law of nature, even at all, and they're most certainly not an improvement. See also Brexit for that matter; the EU is crap and corrupt, but the alternative that we've now voted for is far worse again. When will people ever learn? Probably never :( ]

Can we all just meet halfway and put Vince Cable in charge of the Country? :)

A poll of 1300 "grassroots" members and a derisory 23% share of said (Sky News) poll does not a summer make, I'd say.
You mischievous lefty types, huh. :D

The Guardian is reporting that the government will drop their pledge to shrink the Commons to 600. This is good, because the plans did not include a proportionate reduction in the payroll vote meaning that scrutiny would have been reduced as the balance of backbenchers vis-à-vis government would shift even more to the latter's favour.

Proposal: Those espousing even the slightest positive opinion of Jacob Rees-Mogg be referred to as Mogglodytes.
