The £20 is just the base game, and will not give you the Horizons expansion (which gives you the ability to land on planets (although not atmospheric ones) and drive around on them, amongst other things)

The £40 version gets you the Horizons expansion, and a Season Pass for the rest of the Horizons expansion tree, which includes the Engineers update (secret NPCs you can gain reputation with and then do missions for and get special upgrades) and which will be adding a lot of new things over the coming months (ship-launched fighters, NPC multicrew, a character creator etc.) and a load of paintjobs for your ship. The paintjobs are balls really, they're just cosmetic and are a few quid each on their shop normally.

You want the Horizons expansion though - it adds a lot of extra depth to the game, although admittedly the game itself is still a little "barebones" content wise. But then, Elite always was - you make your own game, basically.

If you can find the Elite base game available for under £20 anywhere (Steam, CDkeys etc.) then buy it on there, and then get the Horizons Season Pass from the Frontier store. Same as the £40 pack (minus the paintjobs) but for cheaper.

Yeah, it runs well on the card I sold you - you won't be able to slap it up to Ultra settings I expect, but it looks gorgeous on even medium settings in my experience. I think I used to put it on Very High when I had that card in.

If you want to give it a try, you're welcome to pop around to mine first. Or buy the "Arena" game, this is £5 and is just like a multiplayer dogfighting game (it's included in the main game too)

There are some tutorial videos reachable from the launcher, they do a good job of explaining the basics needed to get started.

Ooh, Night in the Woods has semi-secretly released on the steams today. But no one has reviewed it fully yet! Bah.

As far as I know it's a adventure platforming horror game or something. Who the fuck knows. I've been watching this one for a little while and it's certainly looks super interesting and kooky with a great art style.

Most recent trailer for face.

Alright?

HOC #64 (I've long lost count) wants to buy a gaming PC and monitor. She has £1k and likes to play Guild Wars 2 and things from Steam.

RHD, chums!

Maybe add this as the primary drive and keep the 1TB as a secondary drive for storage:

That's a £250 SSD! I think maybe a 120GB would be fine :)

i3 feels a bit wimpy for the money, but I guess it's not going to be doing much.

People that don't build their own PCs are silly >:(

I know what you're saying about the i3 but it benchmarks really well.

I don't build my own PCs because fuck that, hence I'm pretty well versed on pre-built ones. :D

I've had dodgy components sent to me too many times. I'd rather sling £50 at someone to put it together for me and check it posts, so I don't have to bother returning stuff.

I bought this combination just the other day.

http://www.ebuyer.com/770820-pc-special ... s-d1165105

Comes out at £880 then you can pick up a Windows 10 license for £20.

It's a good option but when you throw a monitor into the mix it ends up being over budget.

Lol, don't worry, I'm doing comedy outrage there.

I think my PC spec is better than the one you suggested (i5 vs i3, 6GB 1060 vs 3GB and mine has an SSD installed) but your monitor's better than mine.

Yeah, I just think its overkill for her use case. And a 1440p monitor will be more beneficial imo.

For running Guild Wards 2, for sure. It depends what else she wants to play though as Grim's requirement of 'things from Steam' could mean anything really. Also: future proofing.

The criteria have shifted, however. Now it's a PC, monitor, headset, KB+M, and speakers

They don't let you future-proof anymore.

There is this guy on youtube (who sounds a lot like Chinny) who likes to pair up old hardware with new and see how it performs.

Surprisingly good performance from a more than decade old cpu when paired with a modern GFX

Bought. Looks like my cup o'tea, and always happy to support an indie, even if it makes me hellishly jealous.

Taking issue with her claim that it's the first video game to be set in Yorkshire though.

I started playing Overlord 2 at the weekend. It's a delight.

It fixes many of the issues with the first one, such as game-breaking glitches where you'd lose your minions uncontrollably. It also has a mini map.

It's still glitchy mind, but it doesn't penalise you for the glitchiness. Your minion gets stuck behind a log? He'll magically come back to you.

I paint a rather negative picture, but I don't mean to. It's just that it's a bloody funny, charming game with more character than most of this year's AAA games combined, so there's much to enjoy if you can get past the slightly borked physics and occasionally noggin-busting camera.

I'm enjoying kitting out my dark tower with new bits of tech and accouterments, it's a gnarly place to hang out.

I bought Rimworld.

First colony, things were going quite well, we had food, we have heat, winter clothes were getting made in the build up to winter. A pack of capybaras came though the camp so I decided to hunt them for a bit more food to last the winter, they ended up wiping out the whole colony as what looked like about 10 was actually about 30 manhunting giant rodents.

Colony the second, things started out ok. We managed to recruit a few prisoners we had captured, base was expanding, mining was happening, resources were good. However, one horrible accident lead to the downfall of the colony. Whilst mining some steel, the roof collapsed killing our hunter instantly, this would be the start of the end. Whilst out picking up stuff from a dropship, a timberwolf went mental and took out the one colonist that couldn't fight. Whilst trying to save them another got downed. Shortly after this we were raided, 2 colonists caught infections which would later turn out to be fatal due to an ever decreasing supply of medicine, winter hit, cold weather caused several colonists to catch frostbite, food resources were depleted due to half the colony being bed ridden. More raids kept happening and eventually everyone died from a mixture of the cold, lack of food and meds.

10/10 Would recommend.

The Forest has left dirty early access.

I had a whole bunch of scary fun playing with a MrDave and the occasional Myp. It’s a base building knob about game on a tropical island but it has a surprisingly deep and long (fnaar fnaar) horror-esq campaign that can be played coop or on your lonesome.

I am Sat and I highly recommend this game.

Plus on 22 May it’s going to have VR support. Wowwee

NB it ships for PS4 in 2018. No word on PSVR though.
