I'm going to ignore your criticism of Django, then, because you don't like long films full stop apparently.

Not at all WTB, I have no problem with long films, they just need to be pretty damn good to entertain me for three hours.

How do you you cope with books over 90 pages long then, AE?

You're talking to someone who recently re-read the unabridged version of The Stand and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Erm, yes.

I'll grant you that.

OTHERWISE, not a wasted frame!

Seriously dude, he clearly had about 300 dollars to spend on the entire film, I think he did pretty well.

ALSO, it's all very much a part of the MESSAGE, y'know, forcing those who don't want to see the truth, to take the step and see the truth. And sometimes that takes an overly long fight sequence in a back alley, I believe.

Or fucking something like that, it's after midnight on a Saturday and I'm a bit pissed, but it all seemed to resonate a bit.

And stuff.

MORE WINE!

I'll probably post a link to a music video in the YAY thread that gets me all gushy in half an hour or so.

Funnily enough mr and Mrs T watched They Live last night too :)

It's a brilliant film that i've seen many times, but it is still awful :D From the over long sunglasses fight, to the endless running down corridors at the end, to the extremely clumsy exposition scene, to the awful acting in the main.
So many problems with it, but it is wonderful all the same.

Watched "The Fugitive" last night for the 3rd time on ITV2 (the third time I've seen it in total, not the 3rd time I've seen it on ITV2), still a very good film, but I started watching it at 23:15, it didn't finish until 01:55!

How many adverts!? (although looking at the running time it's 130 minutes - so only 30 minutes of adverts - it felt longer than that!)

Still a very good film.

They Live is a fantastic film.

The scary thing is that it came true.

Saw 'Loopers' on the plane, that was OK time travel action nonsense.

Why did nobody mention Scarlett Johansson was in The Avengers? I'm going to have to see it now.

Still buzzing from 'Lincoln'.

I noticed when watching it that they used the Virginian State Capitol in Richmond to film the scenes set in Congress. I've toured it - it's a beautiful building. I've only just remembered that during the American Civil War, it housed the Confederate Congress. A brilliantly delicious choice of setting for a film about the abolition of slavery!

EDIT: Obligatory 'Bill and Ted' clip

Which has always surprised me given that as a general rule I can't stand Russell Crowe!

2 questions:

1. Aliens is shot in 2.35:1 ratio, right?

2. Film4 have made a big point about showing movies in their original format, right?

So... why is Aliens currently in 16:9 on film4?

Django was good. I admit, it was a tad overly long, but plenty for Tarantino fans to enjoy.

Well that's the thing! Personally I wouldn't get rid of anything - it's all necessary. But as devil's advocate, it could be argued that the film is "slow".

'Slow'?

It's fucking idiotic.

The whole thing is basically Tarantino wanking himself off for three hours, and he even dares to give himself a speaking part with an Australian(ish) accent towards the end.

It has its moments, yes. It's not a complete disaster area of a film, in fairness.

But my overall feeling when it finally lumbered over its ridiculously extended finishing line was 'Meh, you ain't never doing Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction again'.

5/10 at best.

I think if it was fast paced and 2h45m, you'd get fatigued in a hurry :)

It's slow like There Will Be Blood or The Godfather are slow. Not as good as them, but that kind of pace.

Nice twist on things, and I liked all the references in there from other horror films. Very good.

Except he doesn't do it very well in this film.

Seriously, Django Unchained could lose AT LEAST 40 minutes from the final cut and be a lot better for it.

It doesn't help that that protagonists aren't that interesting either. Django himself is pretty dull, Dr Schultz is OK but not incredibly interesting.

The first hour of the film in particular really is a bit of a meandering mess IMO, although it gets quite a bit better once Candie and Stephen are added into the mix.

And Tarantino has to stop giving himself any sort of significant speaking part.

I stick by 5/10 - it's an average film that could have been made a lot better if Tarantino would have just let a decent editor have his way with it.

I've not seen many of his films, so I can only rate it as -

Kill Bill vol 1 > Kill Bill vol 2 > Death Proof

Flight is dull as hell. Probably doesn't help that they gave away the ENTIRE STORY in the trailer.

To be fair, there's half an hour left, maybe it gets better. I'm on here because the film is boring.

Try the trailer for size. It's almost the entire plot, and the gaps you can fill in pretty easily.

Edit: Also spoils the spectacle of the maneuver at the start of the film, which would probably have been pretty cool if I didn't know it was coming.

I've sure I've posted previously in this very thread (probably more than once knowing me :D), but here we go again - DO NOT WATCH TRAILERS FOR FILMS.

I can't remember exactly when the transition occurred but somewhere along the line trailers morphed from being tantalising teasers for a film to basically summarising the entire fucking thing in a two minute slot.

Ha ha, :this:

Take any movie from the 80's and watch the trailer, they're virtually all the bloody same - the entire movie condensed into 3 minutes.

Fuck me, trailers are so, so much better these days than they used to be!

Watched Argo at the weekend, nice little film, I'm not entirely sure why everyone is wetting their knickers over it. The story is interesting although I would have liked to seen more about the fake movie production side of things rather than the drawn out 'will they, won't they section in the airport (which is the bit that was basically made up for the film). There are no outstanding acting performances in the film and Affleck is particularly 'blank' in his portrayal of the CIA Agent (but maybe that was the point). A nice film, not that memorable, certainly not a bad film but definitely not a great film.

New Disney short, using a new technique that "seamlessly merges computer-generated and hand-drawn animation techniques".
